It's amazing how hard wearing this stuff is. I have plastic handled scissors that shatter when dropped on the kitchen tiles, but this glue technique gets all the pieces back together. Next time it drops, the plastic breaks in a fresh place: not the joint. Eventually the handles will be all glue! :) A couple of extra tips: add a supply of different sizes of silicone rubber tubing to your tool kit. You will find many uses for it. Here, I would have cut a couple of rings to fit either side of the break, so it would help contain the glue in the desired place. The rings can be easily cut away afterwards. And: superglue dropper tops are a really stupid idea: they always block, and tipping the bottles builds glue up on the sides and wastes it and the whole lot solidifies in the bottle. So: Buy the thicker, 'high build' versions of the glue; keep the bottle in the fridge (not freezer). Throw away the dropper nozzel, or save it for another use. Do not tip the bottle up! Use pieces of wire (I have nice thin lengths of piano wire that are perfect) to dip just the right amount of adhesive for each application, from the centre of the glue surface. For very small jobs you will find needles and pins the right size. This method is much easier and much more accurate than trying to get the right amount out of a mangled dropper top that you have to unblock every time you use it! A further tip is to put graphite from a soft pencil around the bottle top threads, to help you get the top off, as you'll probably get some glue on them no matter how careful you try to be.
Our local auto store sell J.B. plastic weld, a two part thick glue made for repairing plastic auto parts, wonder if it,s worth doing a structural test to see which glue woks best?
Fantastic repair idea! I might suggest however using a 0.002 inch thick brass shim stock instead of the plastic tape. This will allow one to make a precision fit bushing without any material overlap by forming the brass bushing over a rod slightly larger in diameter than the required final dimension. This bushing can be formed using a 32 teeth per inch hacksaw blade cutting the preformed bushing such that the saw kerf (cutting) width will close the gap between the two ends when the bushing is slipped off the larger roll diameter forming die. This technique will form a tolerance fit bushing made of an superior long term material with much greater strength and lubricity properties on the original hinge shaft diameter. The width of the bushing can be trimmed to user determined length once the hinge repair has been completed as shown in your tutorial repair guide.
Good job! 👍🏻 I‘lll keep that method in mind, whenever the plastic in some household machines starts to fall apart. Learning a lot from your videos, regards from Germany 🇩🇪
I use baking soda for lots of things now I can add this to the list. I like to see the different sewing machines you review. I wish you were closer so I could have taken my sewing machines to you for servicing. I went to one of those sew and vac shops just for cleaning and adjustment. When I got it home and tried to sew the needle assembly fell apart. I put it back(following a you tube video) and tried to sew. Still the stitches were off. I paid this guy $200+. I was not happy. I needed to make masks for my family. I found I had a Kenmore machine. Nothing fancy, I plugged it in and went to work. I'm looking for a good embroidery machine, and a sewing machine that's a work horse and a serger. I probably have to buy them one at a time. I'm looking still.
I discovered this method earlier in the year. Since then I have used it to fix a variety of different vintage plastics, including an internal plastic part on a Singer Imperial 7004. Just a few notes from my own experiments: Superglue GEL does not work. It has to be liquid. Additionally, use fresh superglue. If you use old glue that has started to thicken in the bottle, the resulting mix may be very weak.
Can you do a video on a brother model st531hd that jumped into being stuck in a zigzag stitch and will not let me select any other stitches . I bumped it over being in a rush to close the window behind my machine during a storm and even though it was done rather gentle it was certainly just rough enough to jump. I do have a warranty but it almost as expensive to get a new machine rather than spending the upwards of $80 to ship to middle Tennessee . I love my brother machine and would love to be able to repair it
I hope he can help you. Fingers crossed for you. I'm trying to decide which machine to purchase and also whether it's worth the warranty or not. Im seeing many things such as this so I'm leaning not to buy a warranty.
I have a Viking Lily 535. Hinge broke. Finally found replacement hinge (no longer available)for spool cover. However it did not come with a small spring that was left dangling on the old hinge. My problem is that I have no idea how to attach the spring. I can't find any information anywhere about this. Nor can I find any parts list which shows the spring. It's a sort of oval shape, flat on each end with one end split. Any ideas?

I love it when you show how to fix things rather than shipping it out. Nice job!

OMG THAT IS AMAZING!
I am so impressed.
Just watched your hinge repair. It was amazing x
Dang, that worked out pretty well...nice job

This is going to enable me to fix the front cover plate on my Touch and Sew 756! Thank you for sharing!

I find all of your videos interesting. Will keep this trick up my sleeve!

👍🏼 excellent
Will E 6000 work or does it have to be super glue?
