  • Just finished setting up the MegaFlow 4 sump for under the 300 Gallon tank.
The water passes down the left and right side of the tank through two overflow boxes. Right now though the tank is at half level so the water into the sump is highly reduced.
From the two overflow boxes it goes into the bubble remover pipes in the sump. The pipe chamber fills up and the water overflows through a 20 PPI Coarse Foam down into the trickle chamber filled with a mixture of media including lava rocks and bioballs.
Underneath the trickle chamber I have a full 8lb stack of a much denser hygger bio blocks media.
From there it passes through a 30 PPI Medium density foam into the moving bed chamber.
The moving bed chamber is filled with K1 media being moved with a low power power head.
Finally from the moving bed chamber the water passes through a 40 PPI Fine density foam sitting on top of a layer of polyester filling that polishes the water, then it goes back up into the tank.

    Wow what a good job!

I can see why a moving bed filter is useful as I just cleaned out the sump on one of my tank and the bio balls were covered in muck.

I am hoping the filter foam above the trickle chamber will also help cut that problem back significantly. I would have used filter socks but the area where the water comes into my sump is pretty much not accessible with the pipes going all the way to the button. Moving bed is helpful as the dead bacteria are also knocked off the media as they collide with each other keeping mostly just living bacteria growth.

Think overall setup is great but I'm not sure if the order is the most efficient... You ideally want to mechanically filter the water before first, so the sponges (Large, med, fine) go at the start then followed by the bio-mechanical that is the moving bed and the biological at the end (ceramic media, lava rocks, etc) so that the pores don't get clogged by detritus and dirt.

Yep. I mostly just based it on how the Megaflow 4 sump was advertised when I first set it up.
The current setup does have mechanical filtration first, with the mechanical sponge at the top that all the water passes through, that I clean often, then the water goes down through the drip chamber with biological below it. Not a lot of mechanical filtration, but it is definitely there. I just added the additional bio bricks below that and closed the area off with an additional mechanical sponge to prevent the moving bed from getting stuck under the drip area. Over the past few years I never really had any issues with anything clogging the way it is set up.
I am currently having my house repaired and am replacing it with a new larger sump as soon as the tank is moved back in. The new one I used a Fiji Cube Baffle Kit on a 55 Gallon aquarium. The Megaflow 4 was a bit over 30 gallons, and was rated to 225 gallons tanks and 1500 gph flow. Which is definitely undersized for my tank. So the new one is a decent increase in size, and I was able to customize the new one more to how I wanted it.

Hey man hopefully you see this was wondering if you would be able to help me out with my sump as yours but for some reason mine keeps putting out bubbles only from one side I gave a Video if I could send some how

Hi question, what is the point of the ceramics in the last chambers (after the pump)?

what are you using to move the K1?

    • @Halaster
      @Halaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

A circulation pump. I actually have the exact one I am using listed in the description of the video. :)

@@sgtbehrens No problem. Mostly any circulation pump will work. The one I have in there only uses 4 or 5 watts of power. A lot of people just use air to move them around, but none of my air stones or air pumps seems to put out nearly enough air to do this, and I just happened to have the circulation pump sitting around since the person who sold me the tank included two of them with it.

@@Halaster just curious what others were using that's all. got a 300g 96x30x24 with a 100g sump being built now. My last tank was a 180 with sump, just not the K1. Im not going airstone cuz they are way too loud. I got the K1 purchased just waiting for the tank and sump. I have 2 sump pumps (1 3200gph Hydor and a 500 gph hydro) both controllable. doing leak test, i will try the 500gph see how it moves the K1. again thx for the response

@@sgtbehrens Yeah, noise was also a worry for me. Overall I have got the tank to be fairly quiet now. I will probably do a bit of work in the overflow areas as well to cut down noise a bit more, but overall the sump itself is almost completely silent. That is the same dimensions as this tank, though my sump is far smaller than 100g. The pump actually running the water is a Sunsun CTP-14000 I believe, so around 3700gph. This is my first sump, since when I got the aquarium it was already drilled and ready to setup for it. Previously I tended to use cannister filters. Have a sunsun one out in the garage on the 135g tank, which will be replace with this new tank. The 55g tank in the living room is running a Fluval FX4 cannister.
I far prefer the sump with its flexibility and far easier access than a cannister. I mean I wanted to try K1 and it was as simple as plopping in two pieces of foam on both sides, filling the chamber with it, and off I go.

Just a bit of extra biological filtration in an area with mostly unmoving water. With the thick bricks and water with almost no movement it has a better chance to develop bacteria that can deal with nitrates and not just nitrites.
I am not sure the amount of plants I am going to put into the tank yet, so I wanted to hopefully get some bacteria going.
