Love the sump, what power air pump are you using please? Have a 3.3m x 1 x 1 tank with a huge sump and a ton of K1 but dont know which air pump to use to get the K1 to circulate like you are - which you using please? Great vid!

Hi, nice setup! But you missed bit info..
The volume of water going through your sump is not related to the valve but on DC return pump load. The valve is only there to set the proper flow adapted to your pump load, in order for the second intake overflow to take slightly bit water and minimize this way greatly the noise. This is why you have 2 overflows, but only one valve.
Mechanical filtration can be done efficiently with roll paper filter as well. Moving bed is excellent for biological filtration you're right. After that you out other static biological filtration not needed. The big bowl may in certain anaerobic conditions (no O2) degrade NO3.. but in this case, too much flow. You may also setup on return some derivation for chimical absorber as you're using, or UV.. or O3 (ozone).
I can't put link direct in this comment.. but if you check charleslales and diyaquariumfilters you'll find the cool minimalist but efficient sump I developed, all automatic ;-)
lol... I did this back living in Germany in 2000. My tank was 309 gallons and I had a 90gallon tank under it that was the filter and house the pumps and heaters. My tank was always over stocked and crystal clear.
I found the K1 to be far too noisy as it would hit against the class. So I swapped it over to biohome which I have packed to the rim. Biohome is fantastic stuff! In 2 more smaller chambers I’ve filled with biohome gravel. Because my sump is full of media I use a reactor for chemical treatment ie nitrate removal.
I was thinking the same ,K1 is brilliant but so noisy with having an air pump as well to move it around.
K1 has been found to be quite poor these days
You could put some fast growing plants in the end of the sump, just to help out some more.

I’d say if you are having to do something to ur sump once a week mate, then your sump isn’t working as it “could”.
I’d get rid of the floating plastic, it’s really not efficient vs the space it takes up, bacteria doesn’t like to grow on it and it could take 6 months before it’s actually doing anything for you.
Best swap it out with bio balls and charcoal. The charcoal will clear ur water of tannins 👍
I'm sure a year on you will know this by now, but for anyone else.
the siphon adjuster valve. you want to adjust that until the tank fills up so that the smallest of trickles of water goes down your emergency standpipe.
then you should get next to silent running.
Hi, love the channel, out of interest why would you put fine media before the coarse and medium sponge? Shouldn't it be a decreasing media from coarse to fine?
To remove tannins use seachem purigen. It is the best. I always love smart people who knows that k1 is the best biological filtration and who use jbl symec as mechanical filtration:). Good job
K1 is the best moving bed media for sure, useing it static like in a canister not so much.

Thanks a lot great vid! I am a amphib and reptile guy have done loads of bio active custom tanks waterfalls and the works but plan to build a huge 1200 gallon pond in my great room with 15 foot waterfall and want to do a sump system in the basement below the pond. What could I use for the sump was thinking to buy one of those 250 gallon plastic ponds or maybe build a box with liner etc. I build homes for a living so the construction aspect I am good with just don’t want to mess up details as I hope this pond will be a forever feature of my home
The pond will be primarily for freshwater rays and whatever else I can put in with them. Was thinking to get 3 female and one male ray probably a black diamond, a albino a snow leopard and not sure on the fourth yet

Nice looking sump, why did u go with a fbm instead of a wet/dry style filter? U would get better mechanical and superior biological filtration compared to a k1 media not to mention less equipment and if the power cuts off for an extended period of time, u won't lose the bacteria colony and cause a recycle of the filtration. Regardless the setup is nice! Also u can use a check valve on the return pump so u get minimal inundation of water during a power loss as well. I use them often as well as keeping the return nozzles barely below the water line so the moment the power cuts off, u get minimal back siphoning.
If I may ask, what made you conclude that wet-dry filters are biologically superior to K1 moving bed filters? According to the research available (done for waste water treatment for example), K1 moving beds should be substantially more efficient than other filtration methods.

What air pump are you using? I’ve got 100 litres of K1 and wondering whether a 30LPM will be enough to move it around?
I have a overstocked 75 gal cichlid tank running a fluval 405 and a 80gph hang on the back filter but I want to keeep my water much more stable. Would switching to a 35 gallon sump be safe for my fish if I use most of the same bio media from my canister?

I spend as much time looking at my sump as i do my tank. I wish I ran one sooner. Get a filter roller and ditch the floss.
May I know what should be the sump dimensions if I want to buy a tank with 6ft x 2ft x 2ft.

8ft tank it’s around 1700 litres with the sump pump

If it was me, I'd add the first section of filter floss to the bottom of the foam pile, otherwise it's catching all the crap and will clog very quickly. Looking at the pump end, I think your sump is a bit too full, the last baffle is completely submerged.
The only problem is u have to take all the foam pads out every week to get to the floss. This is working perfectly for me. If I run it any lower the mid section doesn’t work properly. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback

I love this sump! I have this crazy idea of having 2, 40 gal breeders. main tank on top tropical freshwater fish. Bottom tank being a sump, same configuration as your sump but in the middle, instead of K1 media I want to set up a cherry shrimp tank. anyone know if this is even feasible?
Hey mate thanks for watching. Hard to to as the may get blown in to the other sections depends what the flow is like and what the baffle set up is like mate. I know a few people who keep fish on there sumps and it’s like a new world down there for another species but on one system. You can only give it a go 👍🏻

How do you stop sump floods from happening?
Where the water over flows into the sump itself you can control the level of water that is allowed beyond that point get your level you don’t want it past set it there have a overflow line you can keep i eye on if you over fill while water changing but the tank then shouldn’t go over that line once you’ve set it so if you have a power cut the tank will drain out water until that line then stop altogether or alternatively have a back power source that will keep the pumps in the sump going if that should happen

I’m guessing you’d just empty the sump for a water change. If you already have a auto top off under there the excess able pump would make things easy as hell. Then just toss the floss and put some more on🤷♂️

If setup properly the sump has enough space to take on the amount of water that would drain if the pump stopped

I’m not throwing shade at your channel Mick.. far from it you have great enthusiasm for the hobby and are very open and don’t hide things. You only have to look at an old video of your tank in your living room and bounce back to this video in your fish room. I run 2 FX6s and a Oase 350 biomaster my tank is quiet, yes you can hear your air pump running but your sump is very loud. For anyone watching and reading this there is no such thing as a quiet sump it’s a myth, people have tried everything from placing insulation foam inside the sump cabinet to make the sound tolerable. The reason my tank has canister filters is because my wife doesn’t tolerate water trickling or gurgling noises. A sump will never be as quiet as canister filters. Sump filters also have awful evaporation so a closed door cabinet WILL have condensation buildup so unprotected hinges will rust over time and water marks will stain wood. All types of filters have pros and cons and a sump has many cons and with young kids about a sump in a cabinet is needed as things get dropped in it. Has anyone opened the drawer in a DVD player only to find a stale rich tea biscuit in place.

@@aquariumaddickuk it must not be running then because sumps are NOT completely silent.. 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe you can explain the water noise on your 2nd and 5th videos then, the 5th video the filter is audible above your video music, it doesn’t pay to tell lies about your system then post evidence of the opposite going on. I’ve also kept fish over 30 years and used sumps on Marine tanks.
Lids on the sump will stop evaporation, and a tiny bit of noise my sump is barely even noticeable over the air pumps haha
the sump ive got is cool.. the only thing wrong with it is my wife hasnt had a bath in months......lol hahhahahahaha

That noise smart arse would be A-my trickle filter on a seperate system which is in same room, B-the return from my pump which is deliberatly pointed over top of water on that tank or C-the airstone from a pond pump breaking the surface rather violently.

having a sump is hard to have your water as good as a canister.
