I enjoyed watching this video, probably more then I should have. Honestly I'm surprised people still play TMO. Believe it or not, I'm the guy who "created" TMO. Much of the mods assets were done by other modders, much it I did myself. I had a vision for the game, I pursued it until knocked myself out, and now it is what it is for better or worse. I have to offer some apologies for a few items. Number 1 being the conning tower refits. I tried like hell to get them to work properly, but I never got it working right, or it never worked how I thought. It pains me to see a 1944 game date, with an early war conning tower. I think by default, refits were random, and I hated that. I tried to force the game to offer new towers by certain dates, but obviously didn't work in career mode. Number 2 apology being, as I came to understand from lurking around the net, is that the Tambor class was being offered as an upgrade over whatever boat you current had. That was an unintended bug introduced by "The Terrible T" campaign option. This was another case of the ingame performance, not matching to what was in the UPC files. As I recall, submarines were numerically classed. Early war boats being a low number, late war designs being a higher number. 0 through 5 if i remember correctly. I think I made the Tambor a class 0 or 1, with the gato and balao subsequently higher numbers. It looked good "on paper", but in practice it didn't. Final apology - I didn't test things as well as they needed to be. Had I done more testing, the above two colossal errors would never have happened. I do question though , if my "didn't test" should be "couldn't test". I took on more then I could chew, and the above bugs exemplify this. As for the ASW - yeah I'm the asshat who designed it. I guess I watched Das Boot too much. In hindsight, I think the problem was I was designing a mod that would challenge me, and keep my engaged. The game I wanted to play. The truth of the matter is, the joy had long since left because I understood too much under the hood of the game, and what worked and what didn't in terms of evasion. If you think of escaping Japanese ASW as threading a needle, the eye of that needle needed to be a couple inch's in diameter. I made that Needle a 1/8th inch in diamater. Anyway, I have long since put game modding behind me. I can barely recall details of the mod or it's design, nor do I have any of the files associated with it. I couldn't fix it today, even If i wanted to. Despite that, I hope it's enjoyable and isn't too unbearable in the bugs and over the top ASW.
I must say it is pretty awesome for you to comment on this video. I am very glad you enjoyed it! I have been playing with TMO for years now it is honestly the only "supermod" I have really played extensively. For all of your hard work and giving me and other Sub-simmers hours upon hours of entertainment, I thank you. These Silent Hunter Games would not be what they are today without people like you. All of the bugs you listed are not really issues for me, these games are somewhat buggy to begin with and your mod is leaps and bounds more polished than SH4 at release. There is absolutely no need to apologize. This brings me to the ASW. Honestly this is one of the reasons I enjoy TMO so much. I Like to be challenged and your mod is obviously challenging. Splashing around the Pacific destroying Japanese merchant vessels with impunity is frankly...Boring. With escorts as dangerous as the ones in TMO it requires the player to actually think. If you get complacent or do something stupid you pay a price for it. That is good game design. Watching this video over again I can see where I messed up (multiple times I might add) . I underestimated the Japanese escorts and they blew me out of the water. I am glad you enjoyed the video, I really am. Thank you again for the thousands of hours of entertainment you have brought me and others.

I played way too much Silent Hunter. That gut dropping feeling when you're struggling to save the boat and you realize a mistake has been made and feel the final line crossed.
Wow.. This gave me chills at the end. I know, it's a video game, but still. As a retired Navy Chief and submariner, this really hits home. Those boys really saved our bacon as a country. Thank you to all the submariners out there. And of course, all the other soldiers, airmen, and sailors.
We skimmers need love too!!! Great comment Chief As a Frigate man I felt both side of this hunt. The IJN made way to many mistakes for him to go so far. He should have died back in the slot on the first warship convoy he attacked. No less his Truk raid. But good on him. I was a HT2 so the repair nightmares at the end brought me back to the Training Center
That was some masterful editing at the end there, fading to black with nothing but the desperate sounds of the crew trying to save the boat amidst intermittent pings... It gave me chills to hear. Much better than smash cutting to a fail state screen. I'm very impressed!

This was great to watch, I also follow your SH3 series! On the first attack run you should’ve made a 15 degree turn to port in an ascending dive while at flank speed. I’ve noticed the destroyers tend to drop at staggered depth later in the war. Then you cut down to slow speed after the pattern you maintain the course. The second and third destroyers dropped after the first but they couldn’t have heard you for a while after the first pattern. You had a great run though!
That was like riding a roller coaster underwater while being bombed. Terrifying to think of what that would actually be like but great job trying to keep them alive. Love the poem/ballad as well. Outstanding content!

Played the ole yo yo game many times, just remember if you're flooding forward then forward speed will just take you down faster, try reverse to hold a steady depth first or to pull out of a flooded out of control dive by the bow.

You can not out run them, you can not outgun them, you can not outwait them. You can only out think them, CRASH DIVE GET BELOW THE LAYER THEN TURN INTO THEM let them think your running. If the first pass does not kill you you need to use the noise of the depth charges to go flank and turn where they are not. If the sound man is not deaf he can point to an open lane as it quiets down slow and make assessments of your hunters! Rinse and repeat. if you have a handy sandy bottom at around 200' PLAY DEAD
WOW..... I was able to spend a day at Pearl Harbor 2 years ago. I visited the excellent submarine museum and was able to go on board a WW2 submarine. The physical closeness of the interior of the boat was intense. It made the final experience of your video terrifying and heartbreaking. All honor to those fighting sailors.

With your boat in such a nose down attitude. You would have found reverse engines to be more effective at maintaining depth out of balance. :) Love your work man.
I don't know the games Damage Control fine points. But if the pumps where out, the batteries drained the only way to push water from one section of the bot to another would have been bucket lines . If the bilge pumps were without power he was dead anyway no matter how much compressed air he shot to the tanks. I loved his idea to squirt out the cuties as a last ditch move "Sword in hand, I smite thee Dragon" Chomp Crunch... Well done for you and all the binge watchers! even years later.

Great video. Very exciting. That ping-ping constant hammering is enough to give you schizophrenia. You stood more chance with a random spread in the dark then a run out - ass quick! I found in the past with silenthunter3 that if I always put my crews safety first I'd survive longer just not as exciting or the big tonnage. 👍🏻

if you're going down by the bow, use reverse to pull out before blowing tanks, also use the P option, for some reason it pulls up better than just rise...if you're going down by the bow and using forward speed, you'll just go down faster...you can blow tanks as you did , just head back down before you surface.
There is a book that you really need to read. They are "Wahoo" and "Clear the Bridge" both by Richard O'Kane. They are some of the best books I've read, and Wahoo goes in depth about Capt. Morton's attacks and explains how he revolutionized submarine warfare in the Second World War.
@@Wolfpack345 I run "Fall of the Rising Sun" mod. Here's a "bug" in the sonar range to target in SH4. If you click twice in rapid secession, you'll get an instant range read instead of waiting for the echo. IMHO, next time you're in a similar situation - three escorts racing to your location - try this; 1. Crash dive, flank speed then TURN to face the closest escort. Escorts will search/attack the spot they saw/detected you last so "get away from that location!". 2. Drop out of flank to 2/3rds the second you hear the first "ping" but maintain course. Escorts moving at flank speeds cannot search with sonar meaning - the first one on scene has stopped to search. If you did step one, you may have well slid under it at 250+ depth and it'll never pick you up when you're behind it. Keep your stern pointed at it as you increase the distance. 3. Then tell sonar operator to "Track nearest warship" and keep your stern pointed at his callout. If the escorts are behind you searching and DC'ing where they saw you last than the sonarman will hear anything as they are in your stern baffles. That's exactly what you want. ---Only use "Silent Running" when setting up the shot, never when running away after being detected! They know where you are so "crawling" away ain't doing you a damn good. Think "defend like a rabbit, not a lion." ---Depth and distance are your only friends. ---Japanese can only depth charge to 300 feet, don't be afraid to push 350. ---Move at 2/3rds, then use the stopwatch to record the "Splash to boom" of the DC. (Dc's drop at 25ft/sec. so you can judge at what depth they're dropping). Then...next time you hear the "Splash", at the time count halfway...if it took 6 seconds for the last "Splash to Boom" your count is 3 secs...at three seconds you kick that boat into flank and hard turn 90 degrees. After you hear the final "boom", drop it back down to 1/3, listen and slowly creep up to 2/3rds when you feel safe and repeat #3 above. Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Now I'm thinking of playing this game now. Want to try and find this on disk as I'm thinking of either building a retro system or resurrect an old Windows XP rig I got laying around. Gonna need a new power supply for it and probably gonna need to find new caps for the motherboard since the ones on it now have tops that are showing signs of swelling. I know it's on Steam but I've read too many bad reviews on Steam saying this game, and even Silent Hunter 3 won't run on Windows 10.
I realize this is very old, but you must have had a glitch with getting an upgraded boat. In fact the Tambor by that stage in the war in this game should have had it's conning tower trimmed down twice. The first trim would have been removing the 'tub' on the back and the second trim down stage would have removed a lot of the front of the conning tower allowing for another AA gun (Possibly, maybe another 6 months for second stage if you refused a new boat). However, after your last patrol and the date in game you should have skipped right over the Gato and been upgraded to the Balao. I wonder if the glitch was caused by having a base transfer at the same time? Had you survived this patrol you were definitely headed for a new boat.
@@Wolfpack345 I still think you should try out Wings over Flanders fields, although if you want to stay with the Subsim theme seeing a bit of SH3 is not bad at all. What happened to SH5 TWOS?
Wow. What a bummer. Assuming you try another career, and come up against a similar situation, use your radar, once you have made contact to get into a firing position while staying out of visual range. Don't worry too much that the enemy might have radar detectors. While it is possible they might, and if indeed they do, they will know you are out there long before your radar beams can bounce back strong enough to register on your display. If they do not have detectors, you are free to use your surface speed to advantage and set up an ambush keeping them illuminated by your radar while staying out of visual range. If you decide on a surface attack, keep your speed low so as not to alert the enemy with a high bow wave and long wake. They will see the white water and phospherecence long before they can actually see your sub. With escorts present, a submerged attack is preferable, as you can fire your torpedoes and dive deep. The enemy will be guessing for the most part and will have a harder time finding you. The deeper you can go before any counter attack the better, as running deep helps give you time to avoid the DC patterns when they come.
This has been a great campaign. I really should've seen this coming based on the title, but I was on the edge of my seat for the entire depth charge attack. Will you be starting a Silent Hunter 3 or U-Boat missions campaign?
Re: PPI and A-Scope. You are calling them backwards. The amber display with the top down view and rotating sweep is the PPI display. The Green radar display showing the peaks of the signals is the A-Scope. You were calling the PPI the A Scope and vice versa.
So i have all of the silent hunters on steam opened up silent hunter 5 and being really new got into danger immediately.....waay to close missed with all of my torps and now have no where to run lol. Hate having to start the first mission all over....btw never run on excellerated time when in port lol you will crash

1. Crash dive, flank speed then TURN to face the closest escort. Escorts will search/attack the spot they saw/detected you last so "get away from that location!".
2. Drop out of flank to 2/3rds the second you hear the first "ping" but maintain course. Escorts moving at flank speeds cannot search with sonar meaning - the first one on scene has stopped to search. If you did step one, you may have well slid under it at 250+ depth and it'll never pick you up when you're behind it. Keep your stern pointed at it as you increase the distance.
3. Then tell sonar operator to "Track nearest warship" and keep your stern pointed at his callout. If the escorts are behind you searching and DC'ing where they saw you last than the sonarman will hear anything as they are in your stern baffles. That's exactly what you want.
---Only use "Silent Running" when setting up the shot, never when running away after being detected! They know where you are so "crawling" away ain't doing you a damn good. Think "defend like a rabbit, not a lion."
---Depth and distance are your only friends.
---Japanese can only depth charge to 300 feet, don't be afraid to push 350.
---Move at 2/3rds, then use the stopwatch to record the "Splash to boom" of the DC. (Dc's drop at 25ft/sec. so you can judge at what depth they're dropping). Then...next time you hear the "Splash", at the time count halfway...if it took 6 seconds for the last "Splash to Boom" your count is 3 secs...at three seconds you kick that boat into flank and hard turn 90 degrees. After you hear the final "boom", drop it back down to 1/3, listen and slowly creep up to 2/3rds when you feel safe and repeat #3 above.

Now I'm thinking of playing this game now. Want to try and find this on disk as I'm thinking of either building a retro system or resurrect an old Windows XP rig I got laying around. Gonna need a new power supply for it and probably gonna need to find new caps for the motherboard since the ones on it now have tops that are showing signs of swelling. I know it's on Steam but I've read too many bad reviews on Steam saying this game, and even Silent Hunter 3 won't run on Windows 10.

I realize this is very old, but you must have had a glitch with getting an upgraded boat. In fact the Tambor by that stage in the war in this game should have had it's conning tower trimmed down twice. The first trim would have been removing the 'tub' on the back and the second trim down stage would have removed a lot of the front of the conning tower allowing for another AA gun (Possibly, maybe another 6 months for second stage if you refused a new boat). However, after your last patrol and the date in game you should have skipped right over the Gato and been upgraded to the Balao. I wonder if the glitch was caused by having a base transfer at the same time? Had you survived this patrol you were definitely headed for a new boat.

Wow. What a bummer. Assuming you try another career, and come up against a similar situation, use your radar, once you have made contact to get into a firing position while staying out of visual range. Don't worry too much that the enemy might have radar detectors. While it is possible they might, and if indeed they do, they will know you are out there long before your radar beams can bounce back strong enough to register on your display. If they do not have detectors, you are free to use your surface speed to advantage and set up an ambush keeping them illuminated by your radar while staying out of visual range. If you decide on a surface attack, keep your speed low so as not to alert the enemy with a high bow wave and long wake. They will see the white water and phospherecence long before they can actually see your sub. With escorts present, a submerged attack is preferable, as you can fire your torpedoes and dive deep. The enemy will be guessing for the most part and will have a harder time finding you. The deeper you can go before any counter attack the better, as running deep helps give you time to avoid the DC patterns when they come.
This has been a great campaign. I really should've seen this coming based on the title, but I was on the edge of my seat for the entire depth charge attack. Will you be starting a Silent Hunter 3 or U-Boat missions campaign?

You are calling them backwards.
The amber display with the top down view and rotating sweep is the PPI display.
The Green radar display showing the peaks of the signals is the A-Scope.
You were calling the PPI the A Scope and vice versa.

So i have all of the silent hunters on steam opened up silent hunter 5 and being really new got into danger immediately.....waay to close missed with all of my torps and now have no where to run lol.
