I've watched this about 50 times no joke over the last month or two. Mine arrived yesterday and it was kinda hard to get as I'm in Australia. Love the vid sooo much! Thanks
Had this knife on a deployment in the jungle. Fit well on a plate carrier vertical carry and on a belt vertical or horizontal. Did everything I expected in a bush knife, but i was actually surprised how well it did at chopping for a small knife. Confident grip for stabbing with wet hands, effective as a weapon. However I fell off the side of a mountain and it tore apart the sheath (overcomable damage with boot lace) and broke the handle (cracked along the insertion point of the blade). I still used it to built shelters and stab my way up sheer elevation under load. So the knife is good as long as you dont fall off the side of a double canopy mountain with it.
Very well done presentation David! I love my LMF II...I have the Survival version in Coyote. It was given to me by my Son-in-Law that is in the U.S. Army. He also bought another one for himself. I absolutely love this knife, the serrations are very useful and the weight never bothers me. I'm a retired Army vet myself. I just wish they had come up with the LMF II when I was in. I've had mine for a little over 2 years now...and it is still my favorite survival/ tactical knife.
Thanks for assisting in my decision to purchase the LMF II. Great, objective, detailed review with useful comparisons that made my purchase an easy and confident one.
Thanks... The LMF II is one of my favorites. This knife has been in the field for years and has been extensively tested... I have not seen any streams where people have had problems with the 3/4 tang arrangement in the handle. I certainly have not. Hope this helps. ~David
Hey bro. Good question. Yes, I pretty much do this stuff full time now and I do make a few points when you guys use the links to buy gear... so every purchase helps float the boat and keep me focused on getting these revs out for you guys. Thanks man. ~David
So far the most thorough review I've seen of this knife, been looking all over to understand the 3/4 tang construction. Thanks a lot, definitely getting this now.
This is one of the best reviews on this knife I have seen. Instead of bashing the handle with a log, you are using it for actual survival and cutting tasks. I just got my LMF II and will treat mine like a cutting tool that I don’t have to baby, but also not abuse. Guys have used these on deployment in some of the harshest conditions on the planet without issue. They don’t try to destroy them for you tube clicks like some do. But they use them plenty hard. Thank you for an honest review of a great product.
I went to sport chalet to see this knife and get a feel for it, and the person working there said "Ya, the blade goes all the way from the tip to the but end." and I was like "Nah, it's made to protect your hand if your chopping live wires. They are 2 different pieces." BAM!!! He didn't talk to me for the rest of the time there. :) Thanks David for the info.
More and more I am not fond of the pocket sharpeners of fixed V sharpeners as the fixed angle of the sharpening stones are not likely to match the factory blade angle. The Pocket Pal comes with a cone shaped sharpening rod... great for the serrations. The LMF II has a built in V sharpener for touching up the fine edge in the field. Hope this helps! ~ David
Hi Carlos... Sorry I have not gotten back to you on the Espanol thing... I am so used to beating my LMF II and taking it everywhere... And I like it's more military design... so I am still partial to the LMF II... it's list of design features and criteria is quite an impressive list.
Hey... First make sure you purchased the LMF II Survival or ASEK. If you got the Infantry, it does not come with a strap cutter. I mention that in the beginning of the video from 1:45 to 2:15. If you did get the Survival or ASEK and did not get a strap cutter... Go to Gerber's website look up "Gerber Gear" to find it with Google. Just contact them. I'm sure they'll make it right. Hope this helps. ~ David
I've had my LMF since they came out. Its pretty much badass. I've even used it extensively for construction on my place, its a very durable blade. When I bought mine there weren't 3 variations and mine didn't come with the leg straps. I called Gerber to inquire about buying some and they sent me both straps, free of charge. Great company and an excellent knife.
Good question... Okay, so look at the SOG Seal Team Elite... the Gerber Prodigy Tanto, Gerber LHR and the Schrade Extreme Survival SCHF3. Gerber LHR and SOG Seal Team Elite lean more toward the tactical side. I have reviews posted for both. You may also want check out the SOG Seal Pup. Oh... I have the Gerber Myth Fixed Blade Pro here also... which I have not reviewed yet, but it's a VERY nice blade. Hope this helps. ~David
You are correct... Gerber wanted to isolate the knife blade from the butt steel to make the knife electrically isolated. It was designed for aircrew who may need to cut themselves out of a "hot" plane. Take care. ~ David
I have been reading and watching knife reviews for days trying to find my "best all around, camping, survival, hiking, BOB knife" and I had discounted this knife until your review. Now that I've seen it in action with good explanation this is the knife I'll buy. Thanks.
Hey man, great channel! I just found it and have spent the last couple hours watching different videos. It's one of the best channels I've seen of this type!
Great to have your comments bro! Nice to have someone who has had to depend on and utilize this knife opposed to spec scanners and full tang junkies... haa, haa... Although I appreciate a good full tang knife too... Gerber did a very nice job on designing this knife for military survival and utility use. It's my first choice for taking into the field. And hey, Thank you for Serving!!! Blessings to you are yours! ~David
I really liked your explanation as to why you think serrations are useful. My opinion has been swayed somewhat on the matter. Outstanding video production and content.
Agreed bro. REALLY nice blade for the price!!! Thanks for the compliment also. Very encouraging. Hey, and thanks for serving our country and protecting our freedom... I'm and old ex-Marine from way back myself... Blessings friend! ~David
Hey Andrew... Prodigy is a GREAT choice. I will be re-reviewing the Prodigy soon. I have both the original and the Newer tanto version here just screaming to be reviewed. Good deal bro. Blessings! ~David
Good question... You could ask Gerber... I do think the SOG Seal Team Elite and Seal Pups are designed for salt water use. And the SOG Force would be a good bushcraft blade. See my review of the Force and Seal Team Elite for more details and check the SOG website. Hope this helps. ~David
Yes... But check the GerberGear website though to make sure nothing has changed... I don't keep that close of tabs on what Gerber does with their products...
Excellent review. I'm so glad I found your channel. You are fair and comprehensive, with pretty good insight. I like the way you give the consumers a wide variety of info like "who this is for". Keep up the good work and thanx.
Hi Travis. Yes, I have like 15 gazillion knives and the one I carry on any excursion is the this Gerber LMF II... Let me know what you think of your LMF II when you get it. Take care. ~ David
I just recived my LMF II. And it was not easy to get Gerber to ship it to Norway (tok 15 emails, and two month). But Im still happy. The best knife I've evere had. And you helped me fall in love with the LMF David ;)
Should be fine... I like the Gerber Myth Pro though as a hunter survival knife though... if that is what you are looking for. Hope this helps... ~David
Yeah... Didn't forget... but I was a little woosie on how it worked and what that actually ment. Infrared resistant... I don't like to includes stuff I can't really verify and hang with. I have all of the original ASEK specs here from a friend on the inside are Gerber. Gerber has changed a few things since releasing the ASEK to the general public and I didn't feel comfortable promoting that one... Hope this helps... Good catch though... keep me on my toes and keepin' me sharp man! ~ David
I found you again Carlos... Ummm... without a second thought... still the LMF II... but... I don't have the Ultimate Pro Yet... I may be won over... but the LMF II is my go to knife... and it's kinda like my most comfortable pair of shoes... so we'll... see I let you know when I review the and use the BG Pro... good question.
Wow... tough question. Did you watch my review of the SOG Seal Team Elite? If you want a survival knife vs a more tactical combat knife, I would suggest you consider the SOG Force vs. the LMF II instead... I have reviewed them both. Check out the video tab on Ultimate Survival Tips channel and check out the other two reviews. If you still have questions, let me know. If you are in no rush, I am really liking the Schrade Extreme Survival line also... Reviews on the way soon! Kind regards. ~ David
Not much... just the accessories that come with it. Just get the Infantry and save some cash. The green infantry is basically the same as the ASEK without the strap cutter. Hope this helps. ~ David
Everyone has their preference and favorites... I like veggies... some people hate them... I REALLY like my SOG knives too... there's plenty of love to go around... haa, haa. Thanks for the comment! ~ David
Own it ! Use it ! Love it ! LMF II has proven to be tough and reliable through extended (normal !) use. Long time Gerber fan. Own many as far back as '70's Mark I and Mark II. Have carrired Ridge as money clip for years and years. Not a fan of some of their imports. :(
Good comment! Understood... Everyone has their criteria for what "the best" means. Full tang is awesome. Better edge retention can mean a more brittle steel too and harder to sharpen in the field... so all these things need to be considered. Some also DON'T like serrations in a survival knife... But the ASEK was designed as a military survival knife... so the design criteria are different than a bushcrafters idea of the best survival knife. Take care. ~David
David, I have been watching reviews and survival tips for a very long time on TH-cam, and every time I come across a video you have done you have spared no expense to test out and clearly explain everything one would want or need to know (lol, car window smash test? LOL). My friend, you are a class act survivalist. If ever in the future you come across my BOL let me just say you are most welcome at my fire. I just hope I realize who you are before my arrow flies... hehe. Great video yet again!
Thanks Ahin! It was fun... too bad you missed it... and like the other 3 car and truck windows that I bashed for other knife reviews that week... Maybe next time... And maybe, if you are good, I'll let you bash the next one... I could see the flying monkey bashing through the front window of a truck with a SOG Seal from the outside while doing a double back flip off of trampoline... haa, haa... Thanks for the comment friend!
Very good question. I will do a video on this soon. In short a survival knife will normally be made out of tougher steel, the steel with be thicker, and the blade will usually be a drop point blade which has the strongest point... so that it can be used for more tasks without risk of breaking. See my Schrade Extreme Survival Review... This is almost the perfect survival knife. See my SOG Seal Team Elite Review, this is almost the perfect tactical knife...Hope this helps. ~David
I like the knife man, I have one too. I have to say though the hammer is a little oversold. it kind of works in a pinch but so does a rock. but for a knife what can you expect right? all in all can't go wrong with this blade.
Dude i got one of these knives because of you and i LOVE it i got the suvival coyote brown version. Half my christmas list is on the Bear Grylls gear i saw you reveiws on!
You do some of the best reviews on TH-cam, and I have used a Gerber LMF2 now for a couple of years with no problems, but I have to tell you I have recently aquired a Buck Punk and I think it is even better than the Gerber! Lighter, better ergonomics, and the nicest sheath I have ever seen...
thanks for your reply, I'll get the LMF II this weekend (and pray to get a Gerber Knife) keep going with your great reviews. Again, Thank you very much. Edher
Man! I am watching this video for the third time! I ordered mine on friday and I hope it comes in on monday. This will be my first "real" knife. I can't wait!
Hey thanks Nathan. My Silver Trident review is coming... it's on the schedule at least. Yeah... it's a crazy awesome knife. More for combat than survival... but great steel, great design, great knife. I think I'll be hanging onto mine for life. ~David
I grabbed my lmf2 mainly because of the fact the handle is insulated. I survey natural gas lines all through the country and run into alot of rouge hot fences. I could easily use it to move hot wire away/cut through it. Plus this thing is beefy. I haven't had to use it on any threats/wildlife yet but I believe it would do great in that regard. I have had it for around 4 years now and hasn't failed me yet
I own an LMF 2 and many ka bar knives. both ideal for pretty much anything. for killing I'd go with the ka bar. the blood groove and sabre grind lend themselves to stabbing as well as bushcraft and I've used both knives in both elements. does that answer your question Georges? batoning. wise up.
Hello, I have had this knife for nearly 3 years. And it also did a year tour in Afghanistan before that with my Son-in-Law. This is one tough, well made knife! I love mine, your customers will too. The LMF II is an above average build quality for a Gerber knife. The Gerber Prodigy is also a great survival knife for you to offer at your store, I own one that also spent a year in Afghanistan. It too is well made and tough as nails!
Tough choice. They are both go to knives... If I had to pick one... hmmm... depends on the situation... I feel like I can beat on my LMF II more... plus it has a serious pommel... SRK is probably better for piercing and dressing game though... LMF can easily be made into a spear... Hmmm... I would probably pick the LMF II for survival...
Hello david i am from sweden and im going to the us in about 2 months. when im there i think about getting a new knife, wich would you recommend; the gerber lmf 2 infantry knife or the ka-bar becker bk2? thanks and cheers from sweden!
Hey... Good question. Depends what you want. Check out my SOG Seal Team Elite knife review... you should be able to decide from there. Also check out my new Schrade Extreme Survival knife review. I mention and compare the LMF II and the SOG knives to the Schrade in the vid. Hope this helps! ~ David
Ahhh... I have one here... have not messed with it much though... will review though... one of these days... But the knife is a Buck / Tops and Tops is Tops... so I would not hesitate.
Thanks for the comments and positives... I REALLY appreciate. If you are US based... I'd be awesome if you used any of the links I have in the video description to get a great price on Amazon... helps us keep the lights on... Thanks bro! ~ David
hi again, i purchased the lmf ii infantry over the summer. i used it once but sheathed and unsheathed it about a dozen times. The rubber overmolding near the blade has started the peel away due to a sheath design flaw. saved up for a while and spend $120 on it.very disappointing on gerber's part. i just thought you should be aware of this.
i got the Bear Grylls knife just because i like to hike up in the woods and in Utah there are coyotes and cougars. I haven't needed it too much but so far i live it. comfortable, rugged, and i have even dropped this (personal error) and gone back to find it thanks to the orange coloring. it can also be fastened a variety of ways.
Funny... gotcha. We are a young group of dudes that have been around for a while... and our core focus is mostly gear / knives within the price range of the average dude. There are plenty of better knives, made of better steel... And Gerber is the manufacturer of many... I have not reviewed my Silver Trident or Gerber Combat yet... but when the price gets around a $100 people get that "deer in the headlights" look & start to convulse. What are your suggestions for knives for us to review? ~David
Jesse Corbeil 2 weeks ago I just picked up the Survival at a reasonable price from Amazon.ca, based mostly on your review. Looks and feels like a good piece of kit, though mine wasn't all that sharp out of the box. Still serviceable, though. Quick question: for the ASEK, Gerber's site says that you need military credentials to buy it, but I can't for the life of me figure out why that would be, unless there's some difference between it and the Survival that I can't see anywhere. Colour aside...
The only question I have, which may seem insignifigant to some, is...Which/why do some some with the old Gerber insignia and some come with the new logo? How do you know which one your getting? And are there ANY changes in material or quality between the 2 versions?
I have both, and used them both for camping and Bushcraft...In a ZA, I would go with the LMF II...it is much larger, heavier...and you can use it for "Urban Survival" too. I have pried open windows and doors with it. I have used it to cut through electrical wires as well.
Does the current sheath configuration make the scout carry method possible for this knife? Also I have decently thin calves, Would I still be able to use the leg straps comfortably?
I get my royalty free background music from Opuzz... I think it's from the Sports and Action collection. You can go to their website and listen to previews if you like. Hope this helps.~David
David i noticed something about the knife i don't think you mentioned. For right handed people, when they cut say bark off a stick the serrations are on the wrong side. I don't know if you noticed this but that's weird, you'd think that they have a right hand and left hand version. ~Brett
splendid knife. I have 2 of them for myself and my fiancee's BOBs. I've used mine on many camping trips. Today it looks like something I've brought back on one of my deployments, but it has still kept well. One of the best all round blades for the price. (dare I say better than some of the more expensive ones as well!)
The music is so annoying.
Yes it is!
Sell anything with music...but is has to be the right music...
I've watched this about 50 times no joke over the last month or two. Mine arrived yesterday and it was kinda hard to get as I'm in Australia. Love the vid sooo much! Thanks
I own this knife I wouldn't trade it for anything it's amazing
Good choice. My LMF II is still my "go to" knife. I take it along more than any other survival knife. Thanks for the comment. ~David
Great story. I shall definitely try not to do as you suggest! Lol.
Very well done presentation David! I love my LMF II...I have the Survival version in Coyote. It was given to me by my Son-in-Law that is in the U.S. Army. He also bought another one for himself. Cut the background music. Irritating and sound like a sales demo rep

I have had it for around 4 years now and hasn't failed me yet
When I was in the army, we used to serrate the upper portion of the blade. Are there any Knives made that already include this feature?
Gerber lmf2
Thanks George... I have the Buck Hoodlum... review coming soon... and I really like it also... I'll have to check out the punk... Take care. ~David
Had mine for a few years now, still one of my favorite knives
i got the Bear Grylls knife just because i like to hike up in the woods and in Utah there are coyotes and cougars. I haven't needed it too much but so far i live it. comfortable, rugged, and i have even dropped this (personal error) and gone back to find it thanks to the orange coloring. it can also be fastened a variety of ways.
Question: attaching a bear grylls fire rod to the lmf2 sheath, can you strike it with the lmf2 blade to get sparks?
But was there ever an lmf 1??
Funny... ~David
I have this knife along with the SOG seal pup on my survival pack when backpacking! Two of the best knives in my opinion.
Thanks for the comment... Gerber will likely replace the knife. I recommend you send it back. Let me know how make out.

I just picked up the Survival at a reasonable price from Amazon.ca, based mostly on your review.
You will be a happy camper. The LMF II is pretty my my go to knife if I am going on a trek. ~ David
Would you recommend the Gerber LMF II Survival with those added gears or the Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife?
Can't wait to see you get the BG Ultimate Pro Knife soon. Like I said I greatly value your opinion before I even consider buying!
Does the current sheath configuration make the scout carry method possible for this knife? Also I have decently thin calves, Would I still be able to use the leg straps comfortably?
would you recommend the LMF2 over the Schrade Extreme? I´m looking for a strong reliable knife on a budget?
many thanks in advance
One of my favorites too... and the one I grab on the way out the door into the woods.
~Brett
Hoping to get my own I! Ive watched this video twice because it is such a good review and im really hoping I can order it soon.
I like both the lmf 2 and the BG ultimate pro knife and do not know which one to get any suggestions on which one
wow. awesome review dude. great quality with the camera work!
Back ground makes this video real cool! Nice job!
If we order from the provided links is it a genuine gerber from Portland,Orrgon or is it a cheap remake with the brand slapped on there?
SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TF-11 Trident Tanto Digi Camo Knife, Black TiNi. what do you think of this knife. Thinking of giting it with the lmf II
Gday, could you please tell me the exact differences between the lmf ll survival and the lmf ll A.S.E.K. Thanks
Angel I open carry this knife and have little to no trouble and what trouble I do get is solved by simply showing your drivers license
Thanks bro... LMF II Is my "go to" knife for sure.
I'm looking for a great cheap survival knife with fire starter, sharpener, and other gear at about $60 kit.where should I look
GERBER LMF 2 or BEAR GRYLLS ULTIMATE PRO FIXED BLADE KNIFE, what do you think ?
Thx for your help.
splendid knife. I have 2 of them for myself and my fiancee's BOBs. I've used mine on many camping trips. Today it looks like something I've brought back on one of my deployments, but it has still kept well. One of the best all round blades for the price. (dare I say better than some of the more expensive ones as well!)
