I believe it’s just a huge cyborg army factory that uses human part of people who succeed to reach zalem ( i mean it could have been a city long time ago but know nova maybe changed it)
In the 2019 movie "Alita: Battle Angel" they show at the end a scientist from the city in the sky looking at Alita in the coliseum last fight but because the movie made some changes don't know if the scientist at the end is the real Zalem. TH-cam has the last movie but is like cut-edited and sometimes skips seconds like cut in movie clips but at least is free.

zalem is connected to another city that is in space (in the ps1 game you can see that zalem has a large pillar in the middle) and that city is called "jeru". the funny thing is that if you join jeru with zalem the name of the biblical city "jerusalem / jeruzalem" is formed

Keep in mind that the movie has its own backstory. The manga, has a MUCH more fleshed out and different backstory especially Alita's origins.

Well there's actually a video game for ps1, sadly it is only available on japanese, but still is a great game, its long, but is great.
Every time I watch this Feature, I wonder if they were actually planning a AAA Open-World Video Game. With the same theme that "Cyberpunk 2077" has - cyberpunk city, also post-apocalyptic (here the Mars-Earth Wars and there we had Corpo Wars).
This Feature really looks like a compilation of Game Cutscenes, that introduce us to the City, to the History, to the Characters, and so on.
Especially with how each City District was specifically detailed and described...

First, and maybe only existing "proper" anime adaptation... and it's not a number one movie of the year... Whats happened with this world.
Movie is even better than anime.
so basically they make fun of regular humans for having a legit body and having maintenance issues but with a cyborg one you have even more..., they're too focused on how "cool" or quote on quote s"superior" they are..I really hope the future doesn't be like this lol cuz all that has to happen is an EMP blast and everybody doomed.
In the movie, the thread The Fall is quite mysterious. Details are not revealed, except for a few details. Meanwhile, in the additional materials we learn many details, including the name of Alita from her previous life. In my opinion this was a mistake. This movie, the Hugo movie about Iron City, and the details of the cyborgs from Zapan's story should be in Alita. This would enrich the story by clarifying some issues. Adding some references to the book "Iron City", the movie could have 20 minutes more. It is a pity that the deleted scene from the training of Alita and Hugo has not been added. This would be better suited to Hugo's later Tanji quarrel.

@@Metaphysicist One of the questions Alita asked herself was her name. It was an issue that could be resolved in a continuation. Similarly with the details of the Fall and what happened in Zalem. Revealing such details outside the movie spoils everything and reduces the chance of continuation.

The movie was great, but it seemed like they left so much of this to mystery or the imagination. This is probably because it's meant to be told from Alita's perspective and she didn't remember any of this either, but it still felt a little hollow not knowing what actually happened between the Imperium and its interstellar colonies, or how things came to be between Zalem and Iron City.
Would be nice if they'd integrate more references to this history in the main story as Alita recovers more of her memories, because most viewers won't be familiar with the source material or seek out bonus features. It would add some much needed context to the narrative that could make the sequels even more popular.

I like how the movie started but I have an idea of how it could've started.
It could've started with a flash of the battle of Zalem in the 2200's, and "Gelda" reaching out for Alita as Alita is falling from Zalem or something and Gelda calling out her real name "Yoko!" Then flash to 2563 and Ido finding her in the scrap yard
