The first showing of this tech was at the *2001 Quake Con* with the early prototype for Doom 3 as a tech demo. Formerly, only big budget Hollywood SFX teams used bump mapping in CGI films since the early 90s (and some 90s video game cutscenes to a degree), but id Software changed that with their development of the id Tech 4 engine between 2000 and 2001. Although Half-Life 2's engine also showcased bump mapping in 2004, the E3 showing for HL2 was in 2003, thus Valve was inspired by id (again) to match their tech.

I couldn't agree more. It's by far my all time favorite computer game ever....and I've been playing PC games for nearly 30 years starting with the Wolfenstein 3d shareware I picked up at Radio Shack as a kid.

It's not the same game, not the same fanchise, 2017 Prey has nothing to do with the 2006 Prey. Arkane Studios were already making a space game when Bethesda told them to make the new Prey as they took the license from Human Head Studios when they screwed them into near defuntion, so they just stuck the Prey title on their space game, which made Bethesda happy and fooled Prey 2006 fans into buying Prey 2017. It's not a bad game in anyway, but it's not Prey, it should be called Talos, or Typhon.
i love how tommy's lines expresses exactly what the player thinks at crucial moments, like the first time they meet the drones, he says: "what the fuck are those things?!" plus, the voice actor really sells the whole tough guy persona, while still having some pretty funny lines.
Prey 2006 was a game way way ahead of its time. The intro to the old prey is the best intro i have ever seen in my life. The new prey is awesome to. Reminds me of a reboot of system shock 2. I wish they would do a prey 2006 remastered. Prey 2006 still looks amazing

You haven't seen how awesome it really is. It's a shooter set on alien spaceship, guns are sort of weaponized alien lifeforms, the whole ship itself is a living being. Not to mention changing gravity, portals before Portal, hovercrafts and many other things.
Mirrors, Interactive screens, Portals, non-euclidean illusions. All lost technology. It's like discovering there was once a highly advanced civilization on earth long ago.
The intro is about the only thing they got right too. The rest is linear, lonesome and without much story - very reminiscent of Doom 3 in that regard. But it is one hell of an intro.
It only came out for Xbox 360 & PC. Won;t be easy to track down on disc (despite pc version requiring a cd key to work). 360 has it digital, and its playable on xbox one as of Feb 13, 2018. (updated comment Aug 5, 2019 with better info)
I think "Talos" would have been a better name than using "Prey". Was the idea to attract original Prey fans? It's not like Prey was a super popular masterpiece. Huh. It seems like YOU never played Prey, friend. Because at the end of Prey, the protagonist is given the opportunity to explore the galaxy. So the series could've gone in all kinds of directions. Point is, Prey 2 was supposed to be connected to the first game. Yes, it was going to be different but it was not a reboot like Prey 2017.
Maybe it's just because the name is catchy and it fits, the entire game is pretty much about your race being the 'prey' for an entire alien race for food/resources and isn't that the very definition of the word prey?
Prey 2 was going to take place a few years after the original. The main character was going to be a bounty hunter, and Tommy was going to return as a mentor type character to help you out along the way.
I really like Prey 2017. When I play it I always get the feeling that everything around me can and will kill me. I like how stealth is needed while fighting some enemies. I like its ability to make me run from any sudden noise. However, I have never played Prey 2006 but it looks pretty fun and I'd like to try it.
Broken Smile I wouldn't call it atmospheric, it honestly was clunky and had awkward delivery. That and having the protagonist interjecting "eww gross" made him look more like a middle schooler during sex ed. It had no build up, just a bar fight that made me wonder if Tommy was a fucking psychopath, only to be interrupted by aliens. Because fuck narrative pacing. That and the characters just felt wooden, even if you were to upgrade the game to modern standards. Poor writing and delivery can't be compensated by anything.
The nostalgia goggles really does make me love 2006's intro but honestly they pulled of 2017's intro so fucking well that I just absolutely think its better. So goddamn good.
I played the recent one before the 2006 one, objectively you are right. However the 2006 is far more unique, and probably will be the one people gush about on retro game forums in 10 years, while the 2017 will be more or less forgotten. It's poor name choice and dry setting deny it the notoriety the original is earning over time.
@@anasevi9456 Prey 2017 is a very well received immersive sim. I've never heard of the 2006 version till now. As long as Arkane keeps up it's spotlight in the genre people will keep running into Prey after playing stuff like Dishonored and Deathloop.
Both games have a very strange existence both have nothing to do with each other aside from the name and basic premise of being forced into space with involvement with aliens but on then there is the gameplay which is only slighty different between both games and generally IMO Prey (2006) is like a better Doom 3 While Prey (2017) is sort of like Resident Evil Meets Doom so i mean both games are great in their own ways and I'm saying this after playing both games to just say neither are fully unique but their good game nonetheless.
Idk I have to say both openings are pretty fantastic, but I really have to give it to the new prey for what they did in setting up your interest and questions of whats going on. Original prey seems to me you know whats going to happen kill a shit ton of aliens anyway possible save the girl and escape. New prey gives me a lot more of a feeling of mystery but yes it does suck we are not ever going to see a real successor to the original. That shouldn't mean people shouldn't give the new game a chance just because zenimax wanted to screw over HHS that's not arkanes fault they made a pretty damn good game.
The important thing to remember is that they both had openings that fit what the game was going for. Like you said, the newer Prey was driving the mystery. The 2006 Prey wasn't about that. Sure, you wanted to know who was trying to harvest your planet, but this was a shooter in the vein of Doom and like Doom, the protagonist couldn't give a shit less about why they're there, he just wants one thing. In the case of Doom, the protagonist wants to kill demons and send them crawling back to Hell. In Prey, the protagonist just wants to save Jen. 2017 Prey = Sci-Fi Survival Horror (more or less) 2006 Prey = Sci-Fi "Horror" FPS with Supernatural elements Their approaches were different, but appropriate for the tone of each game.
The 2017 Prey has nothing in common compared to Prey 2006 except title. Prey 2006 were a breakthrough for removing a concept of save-laod (if you die- you have to play a mini game and return from a world of spirits) and loads of gravity puzzles. Prey 2017 is much closer to another and yet older game- System Shock 2. Yes, it is a predecessor to whole BioShock franchise and first of action-rpg kind (even before original Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls 3, etc). Its even not hiding it- because there are so many links to SS2, you just have to know what it is: the gravity elevators, Looking Glass (title of studio, who did SS2, original Thief and now is a part of Arkane Studios), psi hypos, replication machine, collecting alien organs for research to achieve a bonus, inventory, pipe wrench as first weapon, a giant alien consuming a whole spaceship, mindgames, etc... These things are pretty common for today games, but it was first seen in SS2 in 1999. Yes, this game may be older than you, if you read this :D In my opinion it is a great game with true System Shock spirit in it. This is priceless. Both are great games, but both are so different.
Finished the demo 30-50 times. Back then the demo was as popular as the game. But you couldn't download full games yet, when you could, they were often overpriced. So demo's were popular back then.
It's a very good game. Not exactly earth-shattering, but it's memorable and has a lot of cool elements to it (like the mixture of Cherokee spiritual powers and alien weaponry). I'd say it stands pretty well beside Doom 3. Both used the id Tech 4 engine, both involve fighting aliens (well, okay, demons in Doom, but you're on Mars and let's face it, it all feels very alien), both used supernatural elements mixed with high-tech weaponry (native american spiritual powers for Prey and traversing Hell and even using one or two demonic weapons if I recall, like the cube, in Doom). It's something I had been meaning to purchase for myself and play through properly since I was young. I don't remember how I first heard about it, I think it was a demo like you, but I watched a lot of it played through TH-cam (not all of it, though) and eventually decided I should buy it. That was years ago and I only just bought it this month. $5 off eBay with free shipping, _damn cheap,_ and I just finished it tonight. Worth every penny. Especially since I used a free $5 credit from eBay to buy it.

The 2006 version was one of my favorite games as a teenager. I played it 2 times all the way through and has the collectors edition with the metal box. It was a great game. The 2017 version is still lots of fun and reminds me of bioshock and that's a great thing.
I don't even treat the two as if one is a reboot of the other. I just treat them like seperate games who have the same name, kind of like how songs can have the same name but be completely different. They're both really good games (but I think 2017 is better)

The story in the first one is really well put together and the sci-fi art-style is awesome to this date. Maybe I'm biased by nostalgia a bit, bit I encourage everyone that hasn't played it to give it a try (soundtrack is really awesome too!).
I like the 2017 one better, if I'm being honest. Also, having played through it, I think the male voice actor for Morgan did a better job. When I played through as female Morgan, I felt a little disappointed in the lack of expression in the female voice actor's voice the whole time.
Well morgan really doesn't have any character, at least, the one we play doesn't (and that's kind of on purpose) I think the AI that helps you, december is basically what Morgan Yu would be like since it's basically their conscious printed onto an AI. Tommy as a player character is definitely meant to be more of a character while Morgan is a blank slate.

Prey 2017 is a masterpiece and top favs released past 5 years. Original Prey was similarly back when it came out. Today I prefer slow burning Deus Ex, Bioshock, Crysis type games over Doom, Quake, Shadow Warrior types. Will never forget you could listen Judas Priest on jukebox. Still makes me smile. Saddly just few days ago Glen Tipton from Judas Priest announced he has parkinsson's desease and he have to stop playing. Sad days. Anyways, I still wouldnt go talking shit about either of them. Have open mind and enjoy both.
Prey 2017's problem is that it's worse than Deus Ex, Bioshock or Crysis. Prey 2017 lacks one of the most fundamental aspects of any immersive sim and that's an interesting world. Prey 2006 had a really memorable and messed up world with a lot of weird tech and enemies that made it stand out. Prey 2017, meanwhile, is so focused on fleshing out the average joes in the station doing everyday, mundane things like playing tabletop games, having relationship issues, corporate politics, etc. that it fails to flesh out the world or the enemies in any significant way. The pacing is also terrible because what little information we do get that's interesting, like the history of Talos 1 or the fact that they're performing unethical experiments on death row inmates, are all revealed very early on, giving very little motivation to explore this world because the only thing you'll find is someone wanting to play nerf darts in the office or some shit. Who cares if there are 6 different ways past a door if I don't care what's behind that door. And I don't even expect the greatest story ever. Crysis 1's story is merely functional. But what I would like is some hook to keep me interested in what's going on. It is, after all, supposed to be immersive. Prey 2017 has none of that, and thus I have no reason to bother exploring.
Prey 2006 is definitely worth playing. Besides a splendidly illustrated surreal alien world, it's unusual gameplay mechanisms such as flexible gravity and interesting storyline make it more than just a run 'n gun. In the later stages the game became especialy engrossing. The influence of Half Life (1) is apparent in this Prey 2017 intro. The beginning, including the voices, reminds me strongly of when Gordon is on the train and then walks around blak mesa halls, before putting on this hev suit.
Sure thing! Said it all, you should watch the trailer of the cancelled Prey 2 and see what it would look like, man it would've been awesome! Remember the abducted plane that crashed on The Sphere? Well, apparently, Prey 2 would focus on one survivor aboard that plane! Kinda gives me some badass ideas for script-writing!

Actually i can sort of see the same element in each. You both start in a normal living life where everything is fine then one moment reality changes and everything you know has changed. You will always know that you can't get your old life back because of this sudden change

2006 Prey is on Steam, but cannot buy it from Steam store. You can find cd key from cd key re-sellers quite cheap and it works on Steam.

I played the recent one before the 2006 one, objectively you are right. However the 2006 is far more unique, and probably will be the one people gush about on retro game forums in 10 years, while the 2017 will be more or less forgotten.
It's poor name choice and dry setting deny it the notoriety the original is earning over time.
@@anasevi9456 Prey 2017 is a very well received immersive sim. I've never heard of the 2006 version till now. As long as Arkane keeps up it's spotlight in the genre people will keep running into Prey after playing stuff like Dishonored and Deathloop.

Both games have a very strange existence both have nothing to do with each other aside from the name and basic premise of being forced into space with involvement with aliens but on then there is the gameplay which is only slighty different between both games and generally IMO Prey (2006) is like a better Doom 3
While Prey (2017) is sort of like Resident Evil Meets Doom so i mean both games are great in their own ways and I'm saying this after playing both games to just say neither are fully unique but their good game nonetheless.

Idk I have to say both openings are pretty fantastic, but I really have to give it to the new prey for what they did in setting up your interest and questions of whats going on. Original prey seems to me you know whats going to happen kill a shit ton of aliens anyway possible save the girl and escape. New prey gives me a lot more of a feeling of mystery but yes it does suck we are not ever going to see a real successor to the original. That shouldn't mean people shouldn't give the new game a chance just because zenimax wanted to screw over HHS that's not arkanes fault they made a pretty damn good game.
The important thing to remember is that they both had openings that fit what the game was going for. Like you said, the newer Prey was driving the mystery. The 2006 Prey wasn't about that. Sure, you wanted to know who was trying to harvest your planet, but this was a shooter in the vein of Doom and like Doom, the protagonist couldn't give a shit less about why they're there, he just wants one thing. In the case of Doom, the protagonist wants to kill demons and send them crawling back to Hell. In Prey, the protagonist just wants to save Jen.
2017 Prey = Sci-Fi Survival Horror (more or less)
2006 Prey = Sci-Fi "Horror" FPS with Supernatural elements
Their approaches were different, but appropriate for the tone of each game.

The 2017 Prey has nothing in common compared to Prey 2006 except title.
Prey 2006 were a breakthrough for removing a concept of save-laod (if you die- you have to play a mini game and return from a world of spirits) and loads of gravity puzzles.
Prey 2017 is much closer to another and yet older game- System Shock 2. Yes, it is a predecessor to whole BioShock franchise and first of action-rpg kind (even before original Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls 3, etc). Its even not hiding it- because there are so many links to SS2, you just have to know what it is: the gravity elevators, Looking Glass (title of studio, who did SS2, original Thief and now is a part of Arkane Studios), psi hypos, replication machine, collecting alien organs for research to achieve a bonus, inventory, pipe wrench as first weapon, a giant alien consuming a whole spaceship, mindgames, etc... These things are pretty common for today games, but it was first seen in SS2 in 1999. Yes, this game may be older than you, if you read this :D In my opinion it is a great game with true System Shock spirit in it. This is priceless.

It's a very good game. Not exactly earth-shattering, but it's memorable and has a lot of cool elements to it (like the mixture of Cherokee spiritual powers and alien weaponry). I'd say it stands pretty well beside Doom 3. Both used the id Tech 4 engine, both involve fighting aliens (well, okay, demons in Doom, but you're on Mars and let's face it, it all feels very alien), both used supernatural elements mixed with high-tech weaponry (native american spiritual powers for Prey and traversing Hell and even using one or two demonic weapons if I recall, like the cube, in Doom).
It's something I had been meaning to purchase for myself and play through properly since I was young. I don't remember how I first heard about it, I think it was a demo like you, but I watched a lot of it played through TH-cam (not all of it, though) and eventually decided I should buy it.
That was years ago and I only just bought it this month. $5 off eBay with free shipping, _damn cheap,_ and I just finished it tonight. Worth every penny. Especially since I used a free $5 credit from eBay to buy it.

The 2006 version was one of my favorite games as a teenager. I played it 2 times all the way through and has the collectors edition with the metal box. It was a great game. The 2017 version is still lots of fun and reminds me of bioshock and that's a great thing.

I don't even treat the two as if one is a reboot of the other. I just treat them like seperate games who have the same name, kind of like how songs can have the same name but be completely different. They're both really good games (but I think 2017 is better)
Prey 2006 is one of my favorite games had a great story the music was good I remember playing it iand feeling accomplished every mission u beat I believe theres like 19 20 missions also hella diffrent weapons and the portals were sick
The story in the first one is really well put together and the sci-fi art-style is awesome to this date. Maybe I'm biased by nostalgia a bit, bit I encourage everyone that hasn't played it to give it a try (soundtrack is really awesome too!).

I like the 2017 one better, if I'm being honest. Also, having played through it, I think the male voice actor for Morgan did a better job. When I played through as female Morgan, I felt a little disappointed in the lack of expression in the female voice actor's voice the whole time.

Well morgan really doesn't have any character, at least, the one we play doesn't (and that's kind of on purpose) I think the AI that helps you, december is basically what Morgan Yu would be like since it's basically their conscious printed onto an AI. Tommy as a player character is definitely meant to be more of a character while Morgan is a blank slate.

Thing is, that game was a straight up shooter. I beat it a few times, but the multiplayer is dead.
The Dukenator which is why I feel as if prey 2017 is better designed for its combat... and seeing as it was made from the guys who did dishonored its very good level design wise as it gives you a lot of options to tackle things.

Prey 2017 is a masterpiece and top favs released past 5 years. Original Prey was similarly back when it came out. Today I prefer slow burning Deus Ex, Bioshock, Crysis type games over Doom, Quake, Shadow Warrior types.

Prey 2017's problem is that it's worse than Deus Ex, Bioshock or Crysis. Prey 2017 lacks one of the most fundamental aspects of any immersive sim and that's an interesting world. Prey 2006 had a really memorable and messed up world with a lot of weird tech and enemies that made it stand out. Prey 2017, meanwhile, is so focused on fleshing out the average joes in the station doing everyday, mundane things like playing tabletop games, having relationship issues, corporate politics, etc. that it fails to flesh out the world or the enemies in any significant way. The pacing is also terrible because what little information we do get that's interesting, like the history of Talos 1 or the fact that they're performing unethical experiments on death row inmates, are all revealed very early on, giving very little motivation to explore this world because the only thing you'll find is someone wanting to play nerf darts in the office or some shit. Who cares if there are 6 different ways past a door if I don't care what's behind that door.
And I don't even expect the greatest story ever. Crysis 1's story is merely functional. But what I would like is some hook to keep me interested in what's going on. It is, after all, supposed to be immersive. Prey 2017 has none of that, and thus I have no reason to bother exploring.

Prey 2006 is definitely worth playing. Besides a splendidly illustrated surreal alien world, it's unusual gameplay mechanisms such as flexible gravity and interesting storyline make it more than just a run 'n gun. In the later stages the game became especialy engrossing. The influence of Half Life (1) is apparent in this Prey 2017 intro. The beginning, including the voices, reminds me strongly of when Gordon is on the train and then walks around blak mesa halls, before putting on this hev suit.
Sure thing! Said it all, you should watch the trailer of the cancelled Prey 2 and see what it would look like, man it would've been awesome! Remember the abducted plane that crashed on The Sphere? Well, apparently, Prey 2 would focus on one survivor aboard that plane! Kinda gives me some badass ideas for script-writing!

Actually i can sort of see the same element in each. You both start in a normal living life where everything is fine then one moment reality changes and everything you know has changed. You will always know that you can't get your old life back because of this sudden change
