I can only speak from my own experience but I think people like myself who were kids in the 80's and teenagers in the 90's listened to a good mix of everything. It was a great time for all different kinds of music and me and my friends loved it all. I've always had a playlist with metal, rock, rap, hip hop, and oldies. My first record that was all mine was Michael Jackson Thriller, my first cassette tape was Rick Astley lol and my first 2 CD's were Rage against the machines first album and Tools first album. That's how old I am lol.
We are clearly the same person. I feel like the 90s spawned an amazing amount of new musical genres and the 90s teens just devoured it all.
It was a unique time for diversity in music. The billboard charts were a mix of grunge/alt rock, gangsta rap/g funk, new jack swing, metal, R&B, boy bands, and even country crossovers like Garth Brooks. MTV probably had a lot to do with it, back when it was actually a music channel.

Nate Dogg and Warren G was arguably the most influential artists to modern day rap. They started the G funk era and without it rap wouldn't be anything like it is today.

A lot of 90's hip hop sampled stuff from 70's & 80's songs.
This a classic. The issue now is that the "singing" rappers are not good singers so that's mostly why people don't like it.
But also - this is still a hard-ass G-funk beat so the hip-hop isn't softened by Nate's singing. That tension is what made him stand out. Nowadays, your lucky if a singing rapper can even hold a note.
