...Back in early 2000's, my classmates and I were into Black Metal, even Death, Thrash and all the other subgenres.....but we also fell in love with Michelle...and bought a CD of "Spirit Room"......Good Ol' Days.....
It can't or never will be mainstream, that's because there is nothing pretentious about her or the song. She's not riding around in some Jag with a bikini on and a bunch of jerks with no shirts on jumping into a pool and no one is wearing a sideways baseball cap and on and on and on...But we know she's great as is the song, that's a start
Thank you so much Michelle for your music! It truly heals my soul. I have such respect for you and your talent and your courage to be yourself. You and your work are beautiful.
I Just discovered her when i listen to the duo whit Santana and the song "Game of love" which is absolutly wonderfull song ! It is then i hearded her astonishing voice! and Ya i did subscribe to her TH-cam channel ! Way to go Michelle love ya !
Few people know that this song is about the relationship with her fans rather than with a partner. When Hotel Paper was released, Michelle and her label at the time, Maverick, had high expectations for the album. Are You Happy Now did great, but the follow up single Breathe didn't jump the bar and things did not go in the way everyone hoped for. Michelle had a rough time with how critics in the media received her sophomore album (even though, I'm sure for some of her fans it's one of their all time favorite albums, as I am one of them) and being away from family and friends while touring took a toll on her. She had a baby and this news wasn't well recevied by her label. For her third album she wanted to take a different direction about her music and didn't want to make it alone, she wanted to start The Wreckers and her label wasn't a bit excited about it. All the opposite, they fought her over this new project because it was going to alienate her fanbase. After 3 years of long battles with her label, shutting down her own message board, Maverick being eaten by Warner and trying to find a place in there (because only few wanted to bet on a pop-rock star going country) Stand Still, Look Pretty came out and it was a success. Things were looking bright again but then Jessica wanted to pursue a solo career. So her come back to being a solo artist began and the release of a new album didn't come without another battle. Michelle relationship with music wasn't the same after realizing things were more about the business and less about the music. This kind of artist block, besides the record company crisis didn't help her situation either. Everything she proposed to her new label was rejected. Song after song, they wanted her to try a new sound, not one that she was pleased with, but one that could sell a lot of albums, as that's what they were desperately needing. From time to time, fans were being promised that new music was coming out the next month, next season, next year. After so many broken promises some fans were furious at her because this supposed new music was never coming out, the same thing that happened before Stand Still, Look Pretty was repeating once more. One of those attempts of a single was This Way. Making music for her wasn't the same, being blamed for not putting music out was something she had to constantly apologize. The "No I would never talk to her that way" is about a girl that claimed that Michelle called her a bitch and asked her to leave at a concert. And this is the magic of Michelle Branch, who not only sings beautifully but can also write a very relatable song.
This song has a special meaning. Thanks for the explanation. She's a wonderful artist and she seems so sweet. It's hard to believe she would outright call someone a bitch
really the firts time i heard about michelle branch was in the movie VAN WILDER I heard you get me like 100plus times, then breath in a trailer of a movie then i found this one, now even i used this as a preWORKOUT SONG SO POWERFUL
Es muy triste que Michelle haya sido olvidada despues de su Álbum Hotel Paper :( Bueno, de hecho yo tambien la olvidé durante muchos años. Pero ahora es cuando la escucho mas que nunca!
I'd dread doing a video like this. Let's not forget, every time a continuous shot is goofed up, you have to re-shoot that take from the beginning to maintain visual continuity. So you have walk continuously again and again every time something has to be recorded over again. At the end of this video shot, Michelle must've been like, "Ugh. No more walking music videos again. Ever."
"This Way" I don't know how long it's been going on I don't know how long colors were changing to gray It's kinda funny that I act this way I don't know how long you've been holding on I don't know how long everything's been my fault It's getting easier to take the blame It's getting easier to try and change Too many times I have told you That I was okay But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself I'm not claiming that I know everything No I'm not Because you made me this way I don't know how long I can justify I'm tired of making up reasons you're not on my side And I would never talk to her that way No I would never talk to her that way Too many times I have told you That I was okay But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself I'm not claiming that I know everything No I'm not Because you made me this way Too many times I have told you That I was okay But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself I'm not claiming that I know everything No I'm not Too many times I have told you That I was okay But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself I'm not claiming that I know everything No I'm not Because you made me this way You made me this way I don't know how long it's been going on
If I comment on each song I'll wear out my keyboard so I'll just do one. The songs are great, every one. The videos are amazing. You're amazing!!! A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You look and sound beautiful. Welcome back!!!
StreetsAhead120 THANK YOU!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I remember looking for her newer songs on iTunes, must have accidentally skipped it somehow. But still I wish the rest were there as well, Spark, For dear life, Pretty lying eyes, Not gonna follow you home (one of my favourites)

💘the Spirit Room😀
@Carol Kambing dude i love you someone likes coldplay finally
Love this song and I absolutely love the mandolin edge! Just beautiful, why can't music like this be the mainstream?
It can't or never will be mainstream, that's because there is nothing pretentious about her or the song. She's not riding around in some Jag with a bikini on and a bunch of jerks with no shirts on jumping into a pool and no one is wearing a sideways baseball cap and on and on and on...But we know she's great as is the song, that's a start
Trev Mac True, I know mainstream is nothing compared to her music, but it doesn't hurt to wish that mainstream could accept true art.
That's not a mandolin - it's a banjo :) Still - great song!
Bri heartsmusic it used to be mainstream but i don't know what happend. when the music change so bad
maybe she should have twerked or done a few nude selfies because that's what it's all about today
No one underestimates the beauty of nostalgia.
This is a song that gives you a glimpse of the depth of the wound.

Im still in love with her
Thanks for this explanation. Just going by the lyrics alone, I thought the song was about domestic violence and relationship abuse.
Now im enlightened. This Song is for fans.

"This Way"
I don't know how long it's been going on
I don't know how long colors were changing to gray
It's kinda funny that I act this way
I don't know how long you've been holding on
I don't know how long everything's been my fault
It's getting easier to take the blame
It's getting easier to try and change
Too many times I have told you
That I was okay
But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself
I'm not claiming that I know everything
No I'm not
Because you made me this way
I don't know how long I can justify
I'm tired of making up reasons you're not on my side
And I would never talk to her that way
No I would never talk to her that way
Too many times I have told you
That I was okay
But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself
I'm not claiming that I know everything
No I'm not
Because you made me this way
Too many times I have told you
That I was okay
But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself
I'm not claiming that I know everything
No I'm not
Too many times I have told you
That I was okay
But I'm finally feeling like I can explain myself
I'm not claiming that I know everything
No I'm not
Because you made me this way
You made me this way
I don't know how long it's been going on
