I think that pipe/bar that slides out isn't so much a guard, but a measuring tool to make sure you cut the logs the same length.

That chain is hitting the shielding on the stand and dulling the chain.

I added a spike plate and chain catcher to mine. Spike plate allows you to cut smaller logs and sticks.
