I’m paraphrasing here but I remember a TH-cam video or a podcast where LSV gave two incredible pieces of advice for new-advanced players trying to get “better” and they were: 1. Always double-block
And 2. Always prioritize lands; you have to be able to CAST your spells
I believe there was a 3rd piece of advice but it was something like “don’t draft Storm,” lol.
1:15:03 i feel like it was possible for you to 3-0 there. match 3 game 1 you evoked the inferno titan, probably because it was a 6 drop and you were only on 4 mana and all you need to do is draw a green and you can cast mink & boo. but titan was mono red. u only had 2 green sources and the mountain cycler. so odds are you will draw mountains. and look, you coulda casted titan but the PW was stuck in hand. because u had 3 outs vs 6 or 7 outs i think you should have evoked the PW there. had u landed titan you probably coulda won game 1, then had a chance for game 3
I feel like in that last match, siding in Revoker might've been worthwhile. He obviously had a lot of removal in general, but turning off jitte, copter, vanguard, comet, and in edge cases stoneforge packs a pretty good punch on an early play.
Great that you've added the Dreadnought package! I added it and various Stifle effects to my cube alongside Likeness Looter from WOE which is also fun with Kroxa and Uro etc. Also quite like that Stifle puts a little bit of pressure on ambitious manabases by countering the occasional fetch.
I really don’t get adding that package from a cube design perspective, but I guess it’s fun in that it adds an extra potential for reward for picking up stifle effects
Stifle is just too situational. Always ended up as last pick and barely playable when picked. Was an easy cut for my cube
Yep, I find that cube builders have gotten a bit too cute with design in the last year or so-lots of cards that are nearly unplayable unless paired with one or two other specific cards and don’t actually contribute to a general archetype. It’s always these speculative cards that go last because so much has to go right for them to actually work consistently. This is also coming from someone who tries to build off the beaten path decks with interesting synergies
@@jairomy not sure I understand this, even with zero actual combos Stifle is pretty playable, as is Dress Down. Dreadnaught is just as playable as Worldspine Worm (only good with Flash or Natural Order), and no worse than Blightseel in my experience.
@@melonwatcher Stifle is an effect that is stapled onto creatures now for a reason. It's just not worth a card. Stifling a fetch feels great, but you are speaking like it wins the game on its own, and it's pretty difficult to line up. You are way, way underestimating all of the times that it rots in your hand, and then you have to burn it to only half-handle a creature with an ETB ability.
24:06 - Just FYI for those who either don't know or are otherwise interested in why this doesn't work.
The short version is that a creature with lethal damage being put in the graveyard is handled by "State-based actions" (SBAs) which do not occur during spell resolution. So the hullbreacher is still in play until after the draw-effect of Minsc and Boo's ability is stopped by the hullbreacher's replacement effect.
The slightly longer version:
SBAs are basically like the game's internal mechanics to make the game work, as such they don't use the stack and happen during the in-between spaces of the game, but not during spell resolution. Essentially if a player would recieve priority SBAs check if they need to do anything and then any SBAs needed happen all at once. Then, triggers are checked, and if any triggers occur you start over with another SBA check.
Eventually when no triggers happen the player who "would" have gotten priority, actually gets priority.
1:14:52 i know hindsight is 20/20 but doesn't it makw more sense to pitch minsc and boo to furry. Only a few cards in thw deck let you play boo. 50% of your deck casts inferno titan

There was one little thing that I think could have made a difference. With all that initiative going on it would have been nice to run a forest for Minsc&Boo.

Just for your information, dash and backup makes it so the creature receiving the backup counter also gains haste
You talked about Phyrexian dreadnought, one of my favorite cards with it that is generally runnable is dress down. Lazav or Valroz if funny too. Would love to see dress down in the cube if it isn’t already.

Have you thought about adding galvanic relay to the cube? It seems like it could be deece at adding a much needed buffer for ritual storm type decks while also being cool in the bauble, star, cheap artifact decks.
Are the artifact prison cards in any of the Vintage cubes at the moment? I don't think I've seen a Chalice of the Void, Trinisphere, Tanglewire, Sphere of Resistance, or Thorn of Amethyst in a hot minute. I don't even remember the last time I saw Lodestone Golem.
At 47:42 i believe there was a lethal line that LSV did not consider. There is land (scalding tarn), creature (reckless stormseeker) and sorcery (Fiery confluence) in the GY.
LSV could have played DRC, sac petal to get 4th card type in the GY and cast death-greeter with dash, putting the backup counter on DRC.
LSV’s board would have been :
a 4/4 flying double striking hasted DRC (3/3 flying from delirium, +1/+1 counter from backup, double strike from backup and haste from backup too because dash grants haste to death greeter and gets transmitted to DRC)
a 2/1 double strike haste
for a total of 12 points of damage vs an opponent with no board and one card in hand
I could be wrong, but I don't believe dashing DGC gives haste. This is from the rulings on the card page:
"Backup confers only abilities that are actually printed below it. Any abilities that are gained by the permanent are ignored, including abilities gained due to a resolving spell or ability or copy effects."
Would be sweet if it did though!

I think it was really bad to cycle the Oliphant in the last game for no reason when you didn't need to. You had the petal for green to cast Minsc and Boo and enough mana to then pay to untap the monolith and have enough for Oliphant the next turn even without drawing the two lands to cast it. You were basically out of more expensive stuff in your deck to make the 5th land worth it. Actually out of green spells that needed the Tyga, and the Oliphant would have been gas against a board of a 1/1 and 1/2 and a Jitte with no counters. Just no reason to trade a 6 drop creature so that you could keep a lotus petal for no reason with 4 mana and a tapped grim in play when there's only one 5 drop left in your deck, and 1 six drop that you could have cast by just untapping grim anyways. I mean sure if you drew it exactly the next turn you'd be able to cast it immediately but you weren't under enough pressure that you'd lose if you didn't and had to wait an extra turn. Just no reason to give up the resource of having an extra 6 drop to play there. I get that Oliphant isn't a bomb that wins on the spot if not killed immediately like titan, but it's still a 6/4 trample you could put counters on with Minsc and Boo that'd be great on the board.
Sorry for the long rant, it just always tilts me a little to see people cycle away the lotr cycle creatures on 4 or 5 mana when they don't have to. Like yeah, a lot of the time it makes sense depending on the board state, what's in their deck, or the action they have in hand. But I think a lot of the time people just do it out of habit just to do something without actually thinking about what that creature does on the board. Less so with Troll because they know it's a hard to block clock that they've had kill them after a t2 reanimate, but the other 3 creatures are often way more threatening bodies than people give them credit for in cube and don't seem to get cast nearly enough just because they look built for regular limited.

1:22:20 It could have been better if to cast Misk and Boo instead of cycling the oliphant you just played petal. Having the big creature for later could have been relevant, while the petal doesn't do much.

At the time, combat damage still used the stack, so you could do things like block and then sacrifice your blocker (Sakura-Tribe Elder or whatever) so they wouldn't deal damage and get counters. It was still miserable, sure, but you at least had options to buy time.
Red midrange with Mana Crypt/Ancient Tomb/City of Traitors is one of my favourite archetypes. Turn 2 Chandra is just *chef’s kiss*
