This might sound silly to some, but this music is one of the best sounds that I've ever listened to! It's just... blissful. I don't know, simply amazing. I wish the track was longer...
Obviously the original 8-bit tracks tried to mimic actual instruments with electronic sounds, but that wasn't a stylistic choice, it was dictated by game support restrictions. If they had the chance to have an orchestra playing the score, they would have gone for it no doubt! So I don't see why the fanboys bitch about how the music sounds 'off' compared to the original thing. Of course it's off, it's midi sounds against actual music!
The originals weren't 8-bit tracks, they were made in MIDI and the sound depends A LOT on which sound card or even synthesizer you were playing it on. I personally enjoy the AdLib and Soundblaster versions the most I think. This orchestral version is closer to the Roland MT-32 which I didn't like as much. For me, the orchestral version is a bit too busy and chaotic because the sounds are not as sharp as some of the sound cards I prefer, the snappiness of the soundtrack get's lost a bit with the real instruments, at least as interpreted in this version.
I agree with you on that one, the sound of the flute isn't that great (probably because the 'start strong-end weak' sound that I've noticed from time to time once you brought up the issue). Not that it completely ruins the score, but a pan pipe would have suited this piece better.
It sounds like a pretty cool rendition, but then the flute comes in and ruins it! I really hope there's an option to switch to the original music in the game. Some of the new versions are okay, but mostly they don't sound kind of off.

Doubt you care anymore but it's a recorder I think. Certainly has that sound.
