quik is the best producer of all time.
Also one of tha dopest rappers ever.
coming from the Westcoast Dr. Dre is better
Randy Garcia
Dr Dre is garbage. He has ghost producers that do his beats and he takes credit for them.
You're entitled to your opinion
Real WestCoast music heads would mention Battlecat. Haven't even seen any....he's made a significant amount of hits representing WestCoast classic sound. Wow.
Quik is one of the few hip hop artists that I would label as a "true musician" cuz he STUDIED music and developed his own production style from it.
I simply love your comment about DJ Quik you are right he is a true artist I don't know but nobody else but he that dude thank you for letting me get on your page you have a beautiful and safe day please be safe out there one love✊🏾❤

DJ Quick was probably one of the most talented and underrated rapper, producer, writer I've ever listened to. He literally had done everything himself and was very good at it I don't even think people really understand how talented this guy really was.
Alta626 yea man very talented producer engineer.
One thing people don't know is that Quik actually played instruments too. He had some live instruments on some of his tracks as well.

One Of The Most Underrated Rappers And Producers Of All Time . Quik Is A Legend In Rap And Should Be Recognized More.
Recognition only lasts as long as relevance. His relevance ran out years ago, so you can guess why he’s not recognized anymore.
Dj quik and Daz Dillenger deserve way more credit to hip hop for their production

Damn sway is a real fan of the music! That's something you don't really see in interviews now.
Top 5 producer on my list. Should be on almost everybody's top 10 list.
5. RZA
4. DJ Quik
3. Pete Rock
2. Dr. Dre
1. DJ Premier
honorable mentions: kanye, timbaland, just blaze, the neptunes, no id,
1) Dre
2) Kanye
3) Timbaland
4) Johnny J
5) Mike Mosely
No J Dilla though? ...
timbaland didnt even produce his own joints he had ghost producers
Solid
Quik always been an intellectual.
i never realized this before but my boy Quik look like Hanging With Mr Cooper
Yes he does. I've always said Quik and Mark Curry the comedian favor. They even kind of have the same personalities.
ehmrah q i think a lot of those celebrities are related
Lol nah he really do tho. I was tryna think of who he looks like
that's funny cuz I was saying that to my roommate tryna remember the name,
Mr co,0per,,lol thanx😄
Watching this in 2018.....i had studied DJ Quik's entire production catalog.....melodically and sonically he surpassed Dre
FACTS
Since 95 (Safe + Sound Era) he's surpassed Dre.
Dj Quik schooled Dre not to mention gave him loads of beats!!!!
Love DJ QUIK! the statement he made at the end was so true! We still need real music(live instrumentation) in hip-hop....there's only so few producers that can touch Quik. 9 Albums later and still putting out quality music! Much props my dude.
Dj Quik is by leaps and bounds the greatest Producer/Rapper.
Im glad Quik just came out and said he do black music bcuz that's what it is,real soulful fly music.I don't know why any black person back in the day would hate on Quik or even to this day..maybe unless his songs about women were to explicit for someone to listen to or you was a die hard Eiht fan who was on Team Eiht or was a Crip or some shit. But even some Crips had love for Quik bcuz he never disrespected anybody and just wanted to make dope music. If you don't like Quik you lame as fuck and need to look at urself in the mirror and find some soul.Shout out to all the White & Latinas who got soul and know whats up and a Quik fan
You must be a huuuuge quik fan. I see you on every song lol
Haha like a told another cat if you see me a lot you right there as one of his biggest fans too
I always had respect for people with talent. If you got talent and you talk about real shit then there should always be a place for you. But if your message isn't any deeper then spending more money in one night at the club then some people make in a year, you aint shit.
Also the style of flow that all the 90's "gangster" rappers had was fucking tight. Didn't matter if it was east coast or west coast , they both had their own styles and both was fucking sick. I bumped Gang Starr and Keith Murray just as much as i bumped my Quick , Eazy and the Cronic Album. I haven't heard anything made in the last 12 years that could come anywhere close to what those artist did in the early to mid 90's. Shit just don't have any heart. Maybe i'm just spoiled from being there in that time in place when N.W.A. first released straight outa compton, saw tupac first as a fucking back up dancer to digital under ground and saw mr. biggie small's before anyone knew who the fuck he was.
You know what's up!
I like quik, but im not a huge fan of his music or beats per say. I mean he's made some nice, good sounding shit, but I think there's better producers out there who really grab my ear. Im from the west coast too.
he's aged nicely. Great producer!!!
Nah
LOL. You seen any recent pics of him? Age is catching up!
Quik's production skills is on another level. He needs a mention on top producers of hip hop.
I used to bump quik first album harddddd.
str8 outta Compton, and tonight were my joints
"Showin much flex when it's time to wreck a mic
Pimpin ho's and clockin a grip like my name was dolomite
Yeah and it don't quit
I think they in the mood for some muthafucken G shit" :)
Nicole Noriega
you fine as phuk but what do these lyrics have to do with Quicc???
Knowbody SawItComin Nothin, I just said them because of the his name...Dolomite.
say word...born and raised in compton was my shit...then the battle with eiht? maaaaaaaan quik dont get his due!
"Black pussy" was my favorite!
DJ Quick= Best DJ Ever, Most underrated Person in music industry, Best rapper/DJ of all time, One of the best rappers of all time, Second best diss song of all time
Great stand up soft spoken LEGEND
DJ Quick dances like a older black woman that's had a few drinks. Lol
hahahahahahahahahha
LMAO now thats funny
Quik has always been underrated. 1 of the best to do it..
One of rap’s biggest tragedies is that Quik does not receive the proper & magnified credit that he deserves and probably never will.
Its going to be a sad day when Quik is no longer here to give his insight, talents & tutelage on the game.
An undervalued legend for sure.
Dj quik should go on the breakfast club.
Agree. He's like the West Coast version of a Branford or Wynton Marsalis. Massive creativity, wisdom, intuition...and knows a lot more than he lets on :-)
Yeahh he should go there cuz he's genius on the west coast compton california scene of fame producers and just keep up give him extra money and credit what he did on the music industry and icon legacy of becoming a rapper all time. westside 4 life!!!!!
DJ Quik is the man!! He is definitely underrated.. I loved him back in the day and I still love him and rock to his music now.. I’m old school HipHop 💕💕
Quik found that fountain of youth
Tabitha Kittrell crystal meth head on weekendz
It's as a result of not drinking&doing drugs. This man took care of himself since back in the days,if you look at rappers from his era a good number are dead&those that abused booze&drugs are looking terrible now.
Quik is the man! being a fan since i was a teen, and to be the age i am now and he still out here doing it makes me feel damn good respect
I traded a 415 tape for a Dj Quik tape while working at Fedco. Nigga that's shit bumped and still rocks.
1. Tie between DJ Premier & Dr. Dre - Premier is very consistent and has worked with all the Hip-Hop heavyweights, when you think of that gritty NY BOOM BAP premier comes to mind instantly. Moment of Truth is my favorite album along with Dre's 2001, its consistent with no skip through tracks at all, every song has potential to be a single. The drums are bouncy and gritty and the guest features all get busy! not to mention Scarface's verse on betrayal is my favorite facemob verse of all time! and face is top 5 dead or alive! Inspectah Deck destroyed Above The Clouds and its his best verse to date! Bumpy Knuckles last verse on The Militia is arguably a top 10 verse of all time. M.O.P. killed their feature as well and Billy Danze's raspy delivery just punches your gut every time.
Dre is the best engineer in the MUSIC industry, his mixing skills surpass just Hip-Hop. 2001 is the best mixed album to date and that came out in 1999, that album is the epitome of sonic clarity. Although some may argue that he is more of a composer than a producer, Dre knows hows to construct sound and make it cohesive, whether he is producing hardcore Hip-Hop or R&B/Neo-Soul for Mary J Blige/Bilal Dre doesn't compromise even when doing pop. His drums are versatile and are some of the best in Hip-Hop but yet still BANG and have that analogue warmth. The dude has pioneered three era's of sound since his career, that NWA era with crazy sampe chops, then the g-funk era followed by a more clean sound heavy with bass, warm dums and synth post 1999 and after. Its safe to say Dre is the Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop, you think Quincy played all the instruments and compositions on Michael Jackson's Thriller? But yet Quincy is arguably one of the best producers of ALL time across ALL music genres. The above is what separates beat makers from producers.
2, DJ Quik - THE GREATEST MUSICIAN IN HIP-HOP! Criminally underrated (The most underrated producer ever, your top 5 needs DJ Quik) hardly anything he does is celebrated, its a shame because only when dies is when people are going to realize what a musical genius this man really is and he will become a 'posthumous legend' while he is already a legend. Its happened with Dilla so please do not sleep and appreciate Quik while we still have him. Quik is probably the best engineer behind Dr. Dre and im talking by millimeters here, the guy can produce for singers/rappers (Truth Hurts/Tony Toni Tone/De Barge family and yet still delivers quality music. If you've heard any of the Quik's grooves you'll know what i'm talking about, just check the last one form The Book of David which came out in 2011, Quik hasn't lost a damn thing! Not to mention Quik is the best Producer/Rapper and his music appeals to both male and female audiences making it great for party environments. Quik blends samples and live instrumentation very well, his drum programming is bananas, his bass lines are full and perfected and the guitar licks he uses are funky and signature. Since he is very underrated (a lot to do with label politics and bullshit of that nature) I would highly recommend checking Balance & Options one of my favorite albums of all time and his work outside of his studio album discography with Amir, Do or Die, Mausberg, Suga Free, Nate Dogg and Sporty Thievz. Believe when I say this man's production skills is up there with Roy Ayers, Curtis Mayfield and Issac Hayes, one of the best musicians in MUSIC PERIOD, DEAD OR ALIVE.
3. Pete Rock - Pete Rock is staple in Hip-Hip and his SP drums sound like no other, TROY is my favorite song of all time, the horns are ill and the drum programming and patterns on that track blow my mind every time. Although I prefer the chocolate boy wonder in his SP-1200 days he still comes correct with production. I was feeling the Monumental album he did with Smif-n-Wessun in 2011, where production would fly over the average listener's head.
.4. Battlecat - If you don't know get to know! this man is a mad scientist on not just the MPC 3000 but but on keys, with a wide array of sound modules/mini moogs this man creates the most funky basslines and his synths are crazy, his drums are unique and like Quik he does the talk box justice! Battlecat has worked with rappers and R&B artists bringing nothing but dopeness. His music is great to get the party rocking and will get dudes and girls moving and I guarantee you bump his shit and don't even know it. He flips samples like no other and his music reeks elite musicianship!
5. J Dilla - Dilla Dawg/Jay Dee/Pay Jay this man breathed nothing but music. His intricate sample chopping have you thinking WTF this man is a genius! His drums groove and swing like no other. And his production was very versatile from flipping soul to latin records. His work with The Ummah was phenomenal all the way through Slum Village till his death in 2006. He was very creative as well, using his chest and snapping celery sticks to make drums.
6. RZA - This man is a living embodiment of Gritty, Raw and Rugged. Production on the Wu's debut LP was ground breaking, followed by Tical, Return of 36 Chambers, Cuban Linx, Liquid Swordz and Ironman where RZA was responsible for a heavy percentage of production which was pivotal in Hip-Hop.
7. Just Blaze - Banger after Banger, one of few producers in the mainstream that can get busy without watering down his sound. Along with Bink! and Kanye West Just Blaze was pivotal in the architecture of a new era of sampling soul.
8. 9th Wonder - The way he chops records is mind boggling, he can chop a rock record and make it soulful. Little Brother's albums The Listening and The Minstrel Show are classics. The Listening was a breath of fresh air in Hip-Hop when it dropped and is one of my favorite albums of all time, everything from the content, to the rhyme schemes, beats and even the skits. 9th has gotten good exposure and yet maintains his integrity to the culture which is highly commendable.
9. Hi-tek - His solo work is incredible (Hi-teknology series) His drums slap and the way he chops those guitar licks and blends his samples with live instrumentation only exhibit his progression as a producer. Check the song Time with Talib Kweli and Dion on his Hi-teknology 3 album, its one of the greatest Hip-Hop joints, very very slept on.
10. Nottz - Dude can go into the mainstream and without compromising his sound which proves very difficult for many producers. His drums knock like other producers from Virginia (Bink!, Pharrel,Timbaland). While his drums are distinctive and so are his sample chops and bass stabs which sometimes are in sync along with his kicks which makes his beats bang that much harder. Check his work with DMP called Nottz presents DMP the mixtape, it should actually be an album because production is ill and its some of his best work. By the way most of it isn't on youtube but im sure you Hip-Hop heads will figure it out.
11. Black Milk - His work along side Young RJ as the production duo BR Gunna was incredible, his solo albums are not to be slept on, although he has strayed away from flipping soul and funk, he it experimenting with more eccentric sounds which are interesting and show his evolution as a producer. His work with Buck Shot & Krs One/Fat Ray/Sean Price/Slum Village/Bishop Lamont/Wildchild are ill and he has produced bangers for many Detroit natives.
12. Madlib - Arguably the most experimental producer, Madvillainy is a classic as is Jaylib. His wide array of sample choices have resulted in a very diverse production discography from Erykah Badu, Vinnie Paz, Roc Marciano, Freddie Gibbs the list goes on!
13. Apollo Brown - THE HOTTEST AND MOST CONSISTENT PRODUCER SINCE THE LATE 2000s. Very very consistent producer with a no 'throw away beats' policy. Whether working with established or lesser known artists Apollo always brings heat. The proof is in the pudding. His album with DITC'S OC Trophies is a modern day CLASSIC as is Gas Mask by The Left which had no fillers. Apollo's beats for Trek Life, Ghostface Killah, Hassan Mackey, Planet Asia, Roc Marciano, The Regiment, Boog Brown, Ugly Heroes will break your neck! He is also on the DITC Remix project along with DJ Premier, The Alchemist, Diamond D, Buckwild, 9th Wonder, Bink!, Lord Finesse and Marco Polo. Also he has an upcoming album dropping on the 28th October 2014 with Ras Kass called Blasphemy its a must have it features elite lyricists Pharoahe Monch, Bishop Lamont, Sean price, Xzibit and Rakaa Iriscience. I've been waiting to hear Ras Kass's intricate lyricism over solid production ever since priority records fucked him over.
14. Buckwild - Very underrated, my favourite producer from the DITC collective, his work with DITC and out of DITC speak volumes (Pun intended)
15. Bink! - HAS THE BEST DRUMS IN HIP-HOP! The most underrated out of the rocafella in house producers, this man open and closed The Blue Print. With Bink! its more a case of quality over quantity. His drumming background has transitioned very well in his producing skills. Just listen to the break at the beginning of Nate Dogg's I got love and you'll understand that Bink's drum programming is of a different caliber. Bink like all of the producers on this list has cultivated his own sound which is very distinctive but yet is diverse at the same time. Some would argue his early sound was the genesis of that 'Just Blaze sound'.

Love the post you seem like a true head and have pretty much the same opinion as me. I also have drawn comparisons to Quik and Dilla not musicaly but in terms of being under rated and how people only jump on the band wagon after they die. Also a not totally hip hop left field inclusion I would add on the end of the list would be the dust brothers. Without them there would not be Pauls Boutique or Becks Odelay.
Dre had a lot of help from a lot of people and he stole a lot of beats from a lot of other producers and added his mix to it, that's why pac would always say it took him 100 years to do a album
^
That's called co-production, dawg. lol Still, that doesn't take away of the fact that Dre the greatest rap producer in hip-hop history. He never stole anything. Do you mean, sample?
The Balance & Options album was tight but Rhythm-al-ism was on heavy rotation in my CD player.
Quik’s sound was way ahead of its time. Truly a rung above the rest. And just like him, his music seems to never age, but only gets better as it ages. A personal favorite and true West Coast legend!
DJ Quik, CMG (formerly of The Conscious Daughters), Big Boi (of OutKast) & Da Brat should do an album together.
I remember when I was first put on to Quik back in '98. I was 5 and I'd ride with my unc in his Honda and he'd blast the Rhythmalism album otw to the Pomona Swap Meet. Need to cop the new album
HAH nice ur a last go my man. born in 93 were u. thats dope. young dazzie daz aka lil woofy woof and some other cool cats were born in 93 i forget their names, but yea ur Unc hooked you up, you like the last of the generation that can really understand how growing up on good quality somewhat old school music really was. 98 probably the transition period i would say from old school rap to modern day rap. its crazy to think now. My dad actually bought me the album in Las Vegas when i was 13 in 1998 and we got it north of downtown vegas at the hood cd store and man Rhythmalism has hits. that album is now considered in the class of old school hip hop, for it is old school hip hop now. together we go hand in hand oh yea and you'ze a gangsta, timeless classics and when I'm on speed and do i love her do i need her, should I just take my money and just leave her Ayyy, like No other......with my man suga free!
LOL! I remember ping-ponging on my Tascam 4-Track. Hearing him say that brought back memories.
Omg! Finally! LOVE DJ QUIK! :)
Also so underrated, amazing producer, has to be in top 10 of all time.
Ryan4321 Yea, I think your right! Kinda the same thing with Too Short!
Nicole Noriega They don't get enough props, though.
Yea I love Quik as well, not in that kinda way but his music you know lol. Anyway I'm from Tx but I listen to him on the regular, one of my fav. producers. His production on 2nd II None's unreleased album is dope.
I remember chilling in my room and got my tape from Columbia house and popped it in and when i heard "Tonight" I felt like a God. My City was on the map by the best.
LEGEND! Respect to the OG! Always a great interview!
DJ MF Quik one of the best producers of all time ! He did so much music for ppl u would never think about! LEGENDARY
DJ quik ..I remember the first time I heard His music..first I ever heard was "Too Quik"..I've been hooked every since..much love Dj quik
the beat I like the most by DJ Quik is a song he did with a rapper by the name of Mossberg. Mossberg was shot in Compton before his career could take off. RIP. The name of the song was Shut up.. I dare you to download this song and play it with the volume all the way up, the beat has so much bass it will sounds like an earthquake..
yo, I remember Quik and Eiht beefing heavy back in the day...
And it would have gotten real bloody had they not squashed it both are respected gang affiliated O.G's in their hoods.
DJ quick being interviewed by sway is too dope!! Both G.o.a.t.s
Quik is a way better producer, he got way more hits then DRE
quik IMO is 100% better then Dre his beats are ridiculous so smooth
A LEFT HANDED GENIUS!!!
What you mean by left handed?! You saying what I think you saying 🤔
Its always a different vibe when you get a producer/engineer in an interview compared to the rappers. so much more low key and real.
DJ Quick is Always Respect One ! He was one of the Day ones Rappers Tonight !

Quik is just that chill, musically gifted dude who comes across as a real smart dude. True LA living legend...respect!
So articulate and insightful, and overall, FONKY...
#LEGEND
In terms of longevity, DJ Quik wins by a landslide. When I say longevity, I don't mean that he's still producing/rapping for 20+ years- I mean his consistent approach to developing the brand he's created for his fans to show how his revelancy was never for the sake of making hits, but making and taking his music in the rap genre to a place its never been before, or has been afraid to go. You can tell in the #midnightlife that DJ Quik is in a better place in his career, and possibly personal life. The album is genius. His music is something to be studied. #listentodjquikmusic
Quik is the greatest!! Nobody makes better music than him !!! # THE GOAT !!
"Take my style.. you need it. Cause the shit I'm hearing on the radio is so repeated." - Quik

DJ Quick, always got his Hustle on, when he was a little kid he used to pump gas at the gas station on the corner Rosecrans and Aranbe for spare change. He was so cute, when he wasn't pumping gas, he was in the house blasting his music.
Kimberleigh Livingston You mean he wasn't gang banging, and running the streets with an iron fist?
th3azscorpio She did say he was a kid so he probably was around 10 or 11
Quik always had the smoothest beats and flows

Not all the youngsters aren't paying mind to the old school. Quik's my favorite rapper/producer ever and you could be damn sure Ill be getting the Midnight Life
Most of us musicians tend to roll wit Quik over Dre. Kind of interesting how he prides himself on his engineering skills more than his production. I play 5 instruments and I'm the same way
Good Kid M.A.A.D City ... Sway
DJ Quik definitely has Indian blood in him!
My favorite producer and rapper. Dre close second. But Quik is the dopest. Ijs.
