Medicine Buddha practice does NOT require empowerment to be Practised. Anyone with a sincere heart can do it. Dedicate the merits to achieving illumination for the benefits of all sentient beings, it is enough. If you practice with sincerity and this goal, you will meet your lama and receive empowerment when karma is ripe. What a joy to see Karmapa giving this precious teaching

A comprehensive teaching on Buddhist Mahayana and Buddhist tantra is the book "Dakini Teachings" by Padmasambhava.
So we can practice Medicine Buddha without a lama's direct empowerment? I have sat in on this practice, but I missed the retreat during which the rest of my sangha received the empowerment. Thanks!

The Medicine Buddha practice is from the general Mahayana teaching, and it requires no specific empowerment. There are Medicine Buddha empowerments of Highest Yoga tantra, and those work at a different level. I am a Mahayana guru and tantric Buddhist guru. I say this as guru. Thrangu Rinpoche wrote a book on Medicine Buddha practice. Get that.
Its what is in your heart that matters. Medicine Buddha responds to that. Personal empowerment helps but in my experience is not necessary. Keep calling the Medicine Buddha, best with the long mantra from your heart and feel his blue light enter into your life and those you touch. Blessings.
I disagree with the former replies. Beyond the physical dimension, time and place don't exist. Feel yourself transported to the place and the powerful presence of the Karmapa and the Medicine Buddha and feel yourself being enveloped and filled with blue light. It worked for me. Important is to continue to call Medicine Buddha with the mantra (long version best) into your presence from your heart with gratitude. Love and light
