- Come with us and experience the captivating beauty of West Virginia on the Greenbrier Express, a 30-mile, approximately 5-hour roundtrip excursion that will take your breath away! Join us as we embark on a scenic journey from Cass to Durbin, following the picturesque Greenbrier River.
The Greenbrier Express follows the northernmost 15-mile section of the original 95-mile railroad constructed in 1902 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. This historic line played a vital role in timber resource development, and today it offers a unique and scenic experience for visitors. Despite major damage caused by a devastating flood in 1985, the track has been reconstructed through a collaborative effort between the West Virginia State Rail Authority and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley RR.
As part of our journey, we made a stop in the charming mountain village of Durbin, where all ticket holders enjoyed a delicious lunch. You can savor your meal either on your train car, at the depot, or at one of the restaurants conveniently located on Main Street.
Whether you're a train enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a memorable adventure, the Greenbrier Express promises an unforgettable experience. So grab your camera, hop aboard, and immerse yourself in the natural wonders and rich history of West Virginia.
We hope you enjoy this incredible opportunity to explore the iconic Cass Scenic Railroad State Park from a new and unique perspective.

Looks like the perfect adventure for a couple of senior citizens. The scenery is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your outing with us.
Makes no difference, young or old, it’s a great time for everyone.
I agree
The Durbin station is original to circa 1902 and was in use by the C&O Railroad as an agency station until December 28, 1978 - the last day the C&O used the Greenbrier line from Durbin to Ronceverte. The station at Cass isn't quite that old. It is the third station to occupy that site and was completed in 1979. The second station burned in 1975 and they had a trailer serving as the ticket office in the interim four years. The C&O closed the agency at Cass in 1965, some five years after the lumber mill closed.
That's interesting.
I ❤ trains, trams, take a ride, I have a folder on ''transportation''
(folder 2, in playlists) you will love them too :)
What a great way to relax and see WV! Fun for everyone.
Have a camp 4 miles above Cass love Cass and the trains
I heard that once Reading 2102, a large but somehow light northern type steam locomotive, once visited the cass scenic railroad back in 1971.
I LOVE CASS RAILROAD AND CANT WAIT TO TAKE THIS TRIP
This is such a good video! It's informal, it's edited very good, and its just Awesome! 7:29 That's Me, Mom, and Dad in the Back! 🤣 We came to railfan the trip from Cass to Durbin.
Thank you! We are just a family having fun while showing the world how wonderful West Virginia really is.
@@WvFun You all keep doing what You do!
That looks like so much fun!!
We had a wonderful time on the Greenbrier Express! Highly recommended!
Thanks for sharing y’all have a beautiful family ❤ I do want to ride soon!
We rode the Salamander and the regular Cass ride multiple times. We love the rides there. The scenery is so nice. We did the Durbin Rocket almost 10 years ago also. We have tickets to do this ride in July.
We went to Bald Knob last year. Unfortunately the weather was bad on our day up the mountain. This is a great day out for an adventure, the scenery, the sound of the train, and being part of the history of this amazing train ride. Great Video!!!!👌😀
If memory serves me correctly, that section of track was was washed out in the November 5, 1985 flood. I can remember seeing sections of track hanging in the air being held together only by the rails and ties.
I’m pleasantly surprised it has finally been repaired.
Something unique to Pocahontas County and not well known is that no water runs into the county on the surface of the ground, but eight rivers originate in the county and flow out.
Those rivers are:
Greenbrier
Elk
Williams
Cherry
Shavers Fork of the Cheat
Cranberry
Gauley
Tygart Valley
Correct, the November 1985 Flood (caused by Hurricane Juan) washed out a lot of the Greenbrier line. CSRR ran some excursions along the line in 1984, but they had to stop short of Durbin because the State of West Virginia didn't own the track around Durbin at that time.
Thanks for posting. I’m riding next week and this gives me an idea what to expect. I’ve been to Bald Knob multiple times, but I’m looking forward to this rare mileage.
Looks like a good time….👍
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it!
A ride from the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, West Virginia to the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad with Cass Scenic Railroad Shay #4 (Built by Lima Locomotive Works in December 1922). It is one of five operational Shay steam locomotives at the Cass Scenic Railroad.
Did the trains from Cass Railroad run on the Greenbrier River Trail when it was a railroad?
We didn’t see any information regarding that, but if I had to guess I am sure it did
Do you know if the windows open in all the cars on the Greenbriar Express?
Yes they did
Great video! We’re from WV and will be checking out this new path as we’ve done Whitaker and Bald Knob several times growing up. I looked at booking it and it looks like you book assigned seats? Thanks for sharing 😊
If it is a shay, I think the max speed is like 25mph.
One interesting note: shays have a siphon so they can get water out of a random stream.
About half that or less. Logging locomotives we're not built for speed. They were built to climb up steep grades and run over very questionable track. That's why they need to get BC&G 2-8-0 rebuilt and running.
We’re thinking about doing this for our anniversary. Wondering if there are restaurants and lodging.
I'd like to ride, but I'm concerned that it is a requirement to bring small children with me. I don't have any. Are rentals available?
7 miles per hour
Correct!
Why is the music do ungodly loud ???? And you wife's voice is so low!!! Beautiful area.
