Is this only for restoring data from an external drive? As the sudo testdisk command only works when I have an external drive attached? When I run the command and it's not attached, I get "No harddisk found"
Hi.When I choose the disk (2:20 in your video), it says "Write access for this media is not available", although my drive has full privilegies. Can I safely choose "Continue even if write access is not available"? I have tried to unmount and mount, and restarted, but no success
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This is a very helpful guide. I like how you always say what you pressed, because I was a little confused with this program at first.
Hello, after I hit ‘p’ , I didn’t see any files, I only got “support for this file system hasn’t been implemented”. Can you please let me know what I can do? Thank you!

[Humax ] Humax partition table [Mac ] Apple partition map (legacy) [None ] Non partitioned media [Sun ] Sun Solaris partition [XBox ] XBox partition [Return ] Return to disk selection Thanks
holy shit this saved me! I accidentally formatted my girlfriend's SD card along with all of her pictures from her recent family trip. death was near but I got them back.
Thank you for posting this! When my I press P on the partition I need to access, I get told "Support for this filesystem hasn't been implemented." Any idea what I be able to do now?
Did you solved it with exFAT in this video? :) Really nice, because I had hard to understand the manual from the creator of TestDisk. But awesome program.
Hello. Can you please tell me does this method keep the structure of the data inside the external drive I want to restore? I want to restore a huge external drive where data are listed in several files. I want to keep the files and the structure I have, but the usual restoring programs don't do that. Is it possible by using this program?
@Dennis Grayson thank you for your reply however, roticman does paid services and i unfortunately do not have the means to pay. Thank you for the help though.
Hello. I can't see my usb pen drive on terminal but i see it on the disk utility, it shows up on disk utility but it's not mounted and is also not recognised on terminal. What should i do? The pen usb drive also ejects itself after a few minutes (10min). Can you please help me? I have a lot of important information in this pen drive. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards
Hi, I've got a special issue. I accidentally used my extern media hdd as a timemaschine and deleted the disc. But I stoped the timemaschine until it started to make a backup on that drive. Now its a apfs drive and completely empty. I did not write some date on that hdd, and stellar and also testdisk is showing me, that there is still 3725gib datas of a 4000gib drive on it. Is it possible to recover the index or something without recovery all the data and wait for days?.. greetings.
There might be few things to cause that. You may have not installed testdisk properly so first check that. Then make sure that testdisk was in your environment variables, to find more about that look up ./bash-profile or ./bashrc directories. Oh and finally also if you downloaded the zip version, make sure that you first go into its directory by "cd testdisk-7.2-WIP" command. Hope it will work!
@@ramezredarr If you've installed it using the homebrew then it should be added to the environment variables. But if you downloaded it directly, then you have to either add it to the environment var. or just put the executable in the directory that you're working on.
Hi when I press P I get this message "Support for this filesystem wasn't enabled during compilation." Hope I can get access to my external disk, unable to mount but able to see files on it.
Sounds like your file system may damaged. I just released another file recovery video using a program named "Photorec". Give it a shot, it may help you out.
hello please help me when I tape in termine sudo test desk and I enter my passwd hi tell me sudo: test desk: not command not found. what I need to do please
Because you are not installed it properly. Be sure to either install it by homebrew or if you manually downloaded go into its directory from terminal. For example, if its on desktop, use “cd desktop” etc.
Hi, when i copied photorec to terminal ,i got msg No hard disk found You need to be root to use PhotoRec.i did the root but still i got no hard disk, any help appreciated.
i dont have a house icon in terminal? it wont let me do anything when i run testdisk, it keeps saying that process has been completed as soon as i open the app
Ok, so if you download the zip you still need to use terminal. But I recommend using a program named 'Homebrew'. Go to Homebrew's site, then paste the command shown in the site into your terminal. Once its done, you can follow along with the video and install testdisk from there. So, I hope it helps, good luck!
Great video. When i try and analyze the disk i get stuck on Warning: Bad starting sector (CHS and LBA don't match) No partition is bootable However i was able to access it one time. Any suggestions?
Thank you! I've made a brief research and found out an answer from an admin from cgsecurity's site. According to that you can try the following: - "Try TestDisk, Advanced, Boot, RebuildBS, List. If you can see your files, choose Write, confirm, Quit"
at 4:00 I hit "enter" on EFI but you said "do not hit enter". It showed some 'analysis' occuring that I cancelled. Do you know if anything happened? It seems like nothing.
Probably it didn’t went well but your data may still be recoverable. Try taking the same approach as I do and if that didn’t work as well, then try making a “Deeper Search”. Good luck!
I'm trying a deeper search right now. I did not have "P" as List Items, instead "P" was showing "Primary". The deeper search is taking quite a bit longer, so I will have to revisit.
After choosing my external drive it says 'Write access for this media is not available. Test Disk won't be able to modify it?' I can either 'Continue' or 'quit and return to disk selection'?
Thank you so much for the help, I feel like I'm so close...but I have a new problem. I tried copying the files to Desktop and downloads, both times I can't find them, even though they said they have copied. Will they be in a zip file? Do you know what name? as it isn't under TestDisk :s
Very helpful guide to follow up....unfortunately in my case I get stuck at the "quick search" stage: terminal doesn't return any result even after 8 hours, and it's only a 500GB external disk :(
Since it is an external drive it can take a while, but 8hrs is too much I think. Unfortunately some corrupt sector in the drive may cause this issue and I don’t know if a solution exists in testdisk. You may want to try other alternatives like ddrescue. Good luck!
Hi, I tried to use testdisk to recover some files from my erased Macintosh HD and it said write access for this media is not available. How can I do this, can you please help me thank you.
I have proposition of video - how to recover partitions using testdisk. Just delete all partitions, make new partiton table, write. Recover old one. I checked there is no such video on YT.
This method sounds good but deleting and creating partitions may cause permanent data loss, and if someone is inexperienced with those things they may end up it a unwanted situation, since testdisk is not super easy program to use. But anyway, thanks for the suggestion!
Ok he does not explain that some macs don't have homebrew. For those that tried using brew and got "command not found", I was able to install it. Just copy the below code into terminal and it will install homebrew. /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)" YES INCLUDE THE QUOTES (COPY AND PASTE AS YOU SEE ABOVE)... It will download all the stuff that needs to run homebrew. Let it do it's thing, it takes a while(at least on my slow early 2014 mac mini). You'll be asked to pop your password in for more dependencies. Pop it in, let it flow. It'll tap Homebrew/core and download more. Yes takes FOREVER friends, just bare with it lol. At this point after it's done hogging up time lol, it 's done installing. NOW you can go with the video op's process by typing brew install testdisk and so on, works just fine installing. sudo testdisk...etc. For those on newest updates like Big Sur, when your mac says something about the program needing permission, let it.
not working when i try to brew this shows up: curl: (22) The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found Error: Failed to download resource "testdisk_bottle_manifest" Download failed: ghcr.io/v2/homebrew/core/testdisk/manifests/7.1
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I was about to give up on my lost data, but then I found your video. God Bless you!
