It's for the purposes of parole and other legal trickery, similar to giving some convict consecutive life sentences. If some less than ethical lawyer comes forward pushing for early release on "good behavior" or the like, the judge can grant it and the convict would still likely not survive the remaining term in the sentence. That's why ridiculous (to us) sentences like 169 years can and do exist.
