    I finished the whole Google course about 7 months ago and combination of this plus daily practice of UI is what helped me land my design job. And although I found the course quite boring at the end I am the type of person who wants to finish things so I went through it all. I agree with everything what you said plus I would add consistency and determination as well. I spent every day for almost a year working on my skills and portfolio and did this while working full time job in different industry. It was totally worth it and it paid off!

    The Google UX course was perfect for me. I'm a product manager and the reason I took it was to better communicate with my designers. Some terms were a bit off (used by Google only) but it made me understand how a designer thinks and the reasoning behind some of their decisions. I can now collaborate with more in-depth suggestions instead of being a manager who can only say "this feels off", now I can pinpoint what is not good and what is actually good and provide more assertive feedback.

      @@emmanuelonwuka1532 It was something like a diagonal move. I was working as a lawyer for a tech company and during Covid the courtrooms in my country closed, while my client was also struggling to find a PO for the product I was doing the legal documentation. They asked if I could help with documenting the tasks as I was already receiving them in some form, to put on the legal documents.
      What ended up happening is that I really loved doing that and decided to actually make a career change and the company was very happy about it.
      If you want to get into the product, the best way is to start building things, you can do that in the company you currently work for, or even create your own low/no-code product. Product management is desperate for good workers, if you can showcase your abilities you can land a job easily.

    Hey,
    Google UX Design is an excellent course; it helped me a lot. In a UX part, but sometimes it gets very boring and confusing, so I always clear my doubts by reading articles, etc.
    But for UI Design, this course is not enough, so that's why I am reading ebooks and Medium articles.

    I have completed 6 courses and I stopped at 7 because it’s so hard to find research participants and research is not my thing. I got a job before finishing the course though but irony is not as a UX designer but actually as Webflow designer. So the story is to get a job we need portfolio and Webflow is one of the platform to build your portfolio site. And I saw a Facebook post about Webflow job, I applied and shared my previous UI design work and I got the job.

    This is very helpful! I just got to course 2. I have an Associates degree in Graphic Design, I was working on my bachelors in Exhibit Design but wasn’t really into it but had taken an Interaction Media class. I’m definitely going to take your course next.

  • @okami-design
    @okami-design ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've started taking Google's course exactly for the same reason you mentioned (what I get for the money). And because I wanted to learn and be a good UX/UI designer (as a mostly print graphic designer) but I figured out quite fast that the company I work for has a very very VERY low UX maturity. I think you can learn a lot from the course as a beginner and what you can get from it also very much depends on you, your dedication (for ex. I did real interviews too for my research) and of course somewhat talent. Sometimes I find it hard to do everything well and neat after my full time job, but in the end I always find myself even doing more and neater design than the Google presenter itself, and that pays off :D. Actually what I miss are proper reviews from professionals, I find peer reviews useless most of the time. And as well I think they put a very big emphasis on the research part and way less on the actual design part (which I more enjoy). But I'm happy that Google made me draw again by hand, which I did a long time ago and I was happy doing so :D I really enjoy prototyping too, but before I started the course I already learned a lot of software using skills by myself so now during the course I'm more like pushing my boundaries so I'll make my Figma prototypes more interactive and fun. So I guess you can make sort of much more out from this course, it really depends on you and how much extra effort and extra time you're willing to put in it. I think even as little as reading/watching something about UX/UI with your morning coffee every day gives you something "extra" in the end.

      What Malwicz said about research resonated with me, I started studying UX about about a month ago and started my first case study right away (total self-paced, no program/course). My first hurdle was finding legit and authentic research.
      I ended up commenting on another TH-camr UX designer WIRED to DESIGN (great channel) about this. He got back to me and recommended to focus on secondary research methods and do a competitor analysis of the best products relating to my case study solution. I found this to be the only legit research I could find that was me just faking it. I also USED the products to learn how their platforms and services were for myself. But that's only on the preliminary side (phase one of UX design process), but on the user testing side, I see that my research will either be complete BUNK or minimal and irrelevant, unless I do a redesign of an existing product (church website/app) or something like this, and not the fake case study/UX challenge I'm currently doing.
      Anyway, doing the competitor analysis has been valuable, as it has shown me what any thoughtful business or marketing firm would do as part of a business plan, especially if deliverying a new product or trying to disrupt an existing industry. I actually enjoy the process and see how it stacks in the ExS (experience strategy) and User Reseach aspects of UX design quadrant, a strength and focus of some UX designers, especially leads or PM.

      I am at my very first steps I have no idea about the industry I've studied economics. I usually feel overwhelmed especially after I've followed so many designers on LinkedIn, I see really pretty works thinking I'm never gonna be there.
      I am now at course 6 and it's getting pretty boring but I've learned a lot + I've never received an under 95% review of my projects and I've also reviewed really sloppy ones like people just want to finish get a certificate and go but I don't think this is how it works.

I don't want to feel down if I don't get a job afterwards based on the portfolio I create, but I learned a lot ever since and I really don't regret taking the course. Lol, I have the same thoughts about the Google Course i've completed 1-4 and learned a lot about UX!! not UI, and then for the next project (website) i didn't made case study nor did i pick up the sharpee website prompt they are proposing, because I thought i'd better off making myself portfolio website than some another generic website with boring case study. Then in the peer graded assignments i just wrote: "please review my website". Nontheless i still think finishing this course and having it in your linkedin is better than not having it, so I would suggest doing very good 1-4 courses and you can slack a bit more in the last 3 courses. Just try to focus more on UI reading other courses, websites or Malewicz's books

    I think someone at G is listening to this feedback. Halfway through section 5 a month ago they completely nixed the peer graded sections and only had brief tests for knowledge points. Sections 5/6/7 seem to have been revamped a bit to provide portfolio, resume, and interview content, and now the certificate lands you on a list to be on job boards via a G partnership made specifically for certificate earners.
    Overall, I agree with your assessment in this video, still. It's a lot of good groundwork, but there's no replacement for fundamental skills. If you don't come out of the certificate program running and looking to improve your UI fundamentals, refining your work capacity and speed, you're just going to be another person complaining there are no jobs and you can't get hired.
    I've been doing websites since flaming logos and winamp skins, and the certificate still gave me some useful up to date information. But it's not a place to land. It's a place to jump from.

    Amazing video, Malewicz! That's exactly my thoughts while taking the Google course. I agree that they focus more on the process and less on UI concepts. I'm a graphic designer with 10 years of experience transitioning to UX/UI, that's why I took the Google course. Before that I took a Figma course focused on UI to learn about Figma and best practices.
    For someone that comes from graphic design with work experience in design agencies, do you think it makes sense to apply for Jr positions or we could possibly be applying for mid to senior positions as first job in this field? And what are your thoughts on UX/UI jobs demand for 2023 with all those lay offs happening at this time?

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends how well your transition from graphics design to UI goes. If your UI skills are really good quality (I will do a video on those "levels" on Monday) then you may go a bit higher than junior and add previous experience as work exp. But it's hard to say.

      @@MalewiczHype That's fantastic, Malewicz! I haven't seen anyone talking about that topic and it's a little bit confusing for me. I'm confident in my UI design skills, having my graphic design background combining it with what I learned from the UI courses I studied. I do not have previous experience in terms of research, testing with users, and the design process from UX/UI design, that's the reason why I am now studying the UX Google course. As I'm preparing to update my portfolio with UX/UI design projects, the case studies seem very intimidating for me. I just bought your case study and portfolio bundle to study after I finish the Google course, it's exactly what I was looking for. Yes, that's exactly the idea. With a "ux case study" a reviewer can mostly see whether "all is there" and very rarely there are any true insights from these fake projects and fake research.
      With UI it's either good or it's not - check out my most recent video on that :)

    I completed 2 IDF courses before getting my first ux-ui job and it didn't help me at all, stakeholders didn't care about any of the steps i took to design the screens, and they made it clear in every meeting 😂😂, it was pretty frustrating at the beginning, all those customer journey maps, empathy maps, personas, etc were never used, improving ui skills to get a polished and well structured screen and prototyping the components real behavior is more pragmatic and valuable skill.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, some big companies do value some of the process, but definitely not all of it - it shifts depending on the approach, the stakeholders, the business needs, their financial situation and many other things. UI is the safest path :)

    Thank you for this video. I am currently looking at all the different bootcamps and courses and confused about which one to take. I really value opinions of experience people in the industry like you. I am considering a bootcamp by University of Toronto or this Google UX course. I have no experience in this industry and trying to get into the tech industry through UI/UX. Hopefully by the next few months, the economy would be in a much better situation. Do you still hold the opinion that Google UX course would be better to a complete newbie?

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am generally against expensive bootcamps as sure - some can be good, but most of them are heavily overpriced and the quality of what you get is not that high. Doing the first 4 parts of the google course and 2-3 of my courses generally brings better outcomes - I'm seeing it (and hearing) every day from people who are getting their first job. It's worth focusing on parts that give you the most benefit in the shortest time, as it will still take a lot of time to get good.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I believe 1-4 is the best parts. 5 is really low quality UI (with a pretty good instructor, but the skills it teaches aren't really helpful) and 6-7 is repeating 1-5 again on a different kind of project.
      I'd say focus on UI skills after part 4.

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't tried it I'm afraid so can't say. However you need to be aware that most big corporations (google included) when they make a course it's done in a "corporate" way, meaning the IBM Enterprise one is likely "similar" meaning that it likely won't teach you the skills needed for working for smaller brands - and those are hiring the most rn.

Currently using my iPad Pro 3rd gen , and a 2012 Mac mini that im running figma smoothly on. Do you recommend me getting the m1 to run some of the software in your ui course? Generally Figma in most courses, Sketch in some. But they're taught in a way where you can follow along in any modern tool.
