Neil Innes, Eric Idle & Rutling Ken Thornton, Hollywoood 2003

The Rutles song bit of the little gig Laurie and I put together for Neil in 2003 that Eric Idle showed up for because he and Neil were getting along that week. Quite brilliant. The genius song writing and musical ability of Neil his sense of fun, professionalism and Eric plus the vehicle of the Rutles were just so fabulous together.

But he was. My luck to know of Neil and his many bandmates was getting sent to serve 2 years on an RAF Base, I worked at Bentwaters and Woodbridge bases which were about 5 or 6 miles apart. Lucky for me the Bonzo Dog Band had just released Let's Make Up And Be Friendly. My first time getting in a cab the plump cabbie guy was laughing up a storm as I was getting in, I asked what was so funny and he cranked up the radio and it was a Bonzo Dog Band song. I was headed into Ipswich to check out the record shops having just bought a brand new pioneer stereo lp player with nice big speakers. I brought back to the barracks 35 lps including The Bonzo Dog Band and I was mesmerized. They were to me like discovering some long lost band in a shangra la. The Beatles with humor mixed in. I should say as good as The Beatles with humor mixed in. They have many awesome originals and their covers. Wow. Then they do some solo stuff. Neil continues in television and The World and other bands he and Dennis Cowan and others formed. They have left behind an awesome treasure trove of music and I cherish that music, so the lucky that got to discover Neil & Viv and their bandmates, Neil knew about us. Only underrated by those that never listened. Rest in that heavenly band boys.

How have I not seen this before. It's just wonderful. Neil never gets the respect he deserves, a truly magical songwriter with a great sense of humour. Who knows maybe if he had stuck to straightforward pop he could have been huge but was too interesting to stuck to the norm.

Laurie and I , I take it are Bonnie Rose and Laurie from California they hosted a Neil Innes tribute site on the internet. Bonnie dear passed away from some form of cancer in the early 2000's. I was a member of that site and what a fun tie we had chatting amongst fans via Innesboard where we were known by fictional names. I was Percy. Bonnie's passing was the end of the Innesboard.
