Reminds me of our '83 GMC van with the 6.2 diesel. That thing was unstoppable. The odometer had rolled over twice, the engine still ran strong, the transmission was good, but body cancer finally forced my dad to trade it in when the great state of PA wouldn't let it pass anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if it migrated south to a state where the body cancer might slow down.
After sitting for two years she still ran pretty good. I am still driving it to work every day three years later. It just keeps running better all the time.
Largely a good thing with early diesels. Especially what GM put in cars, simple conversion from 350 gas to burn diesel, notoriously awful and underendgineered
@farmalljd: The 5.7 diesel is the one that is similar to the Olds gasoline V8. Two of the biggest problems on the early diesels were the use of flat tappet cams (instead of rollers), and the lack of a fuel/water separator. Water in the fuel, combined with 22.5:1 compression made for blown head gaskets, cracked heads and pistons, and broken cranks and main webs. GM finally addressed these problems part way thru the '81 Model year (DX block) but it was too little, too late.
@NP535overdrive the door latches do last, you just need to make an electric tape grommet on the latch bolt then theyll hold strong and shut easy....did it to my 86 suburban on all 4 doors and pulled all the door pannels to oil everything in the doors...now the windows are faster than before and the doors shut just like new, the springs in the front 2 doors will actually shut the door correctly
Yes and yes. All this motor needs to run is Power to the glow pluggs. That can be done with a push button on the dash. Power to the fuel solonoid to turn it on and off. Power to the starter to spin it over. Add a fuel filter and off you go. Turn up the volume on the injector pump and a turbo will work.
It is the 1983 one year only filter. The fuel line comes from the tank to the filter, under the manifold to the pump, back to a secondary filter on the back of the manifold and then to the injector pump.
@CrackinVTEC666 That's why mine has 370K and runs like new? Most diesels of that era that failed were due to user error. Not waiting for glow plugs, using ether, crappy fuel, etc.
The 6-2 is an interesting engine. Although it was built to be a diesel, and not a converted V8 gas motor as some claim, alot of standard Chevy parts will bolt on. A standard Chevy starter will bolt on but, it will only last about 6 months. It will bolt up to any trans a 350 will. That does not mean it is a good idea though. I would go on craigslist and find a rusted out diesel truck as a doner. I have an 85 blazer with a broken frame.
Yeah, glowplugs... it's possible the cold start solenoid isn't engaging either another thing... the stanadyn injected diesels aka the gm 6.2 and the for 6.9/7.3 idi are sensitive to a weak lift pump or what you'd call on a gas engine the regular old fuel pump. the pressure from the lift pump changes with rpm and that's one of the things that controls the injectors richness and timing mine always chugged and smoked when the lift pump was getting weak.
@MRkallek91 I don't know what the Factory "acceptable range is on that engine. I have no oil gage but the oil light stays out when it is running. You should be able to find that info with a g00gle search though I would think. Let me know what you find if you don't mind.
@Andre609 Old Chevy diesels have a timer that cycles on and off. They only work when they want to and are prone to short cycling. Sometimes this truck short cycles, sometimes it works right and other times it does not work at all. It just depends on it's mood.
I liked driving this truck but I was always having to work on it and spend money on it. It cost more to keep it running than I saved in fuel so I sold it. Thank you for watching.
@@KeeperofTheMountain been dragging that motor around for 20yrs lol. Had it in a 49 chevy pickup it was alot of fun then 2 kids and a wife...we didn't fit in a bucket seat hotrod...pulled motor sold the truck.. youngest kid is a senior, so its time for old dad to build another truck lol
@MyTNGirl Nope the 6.2 and 6.5 were two versions of the same motor. They were designed and built to be diesel. You are thinking of the 5.7 that came out in 1979. It did not even make a good boat anchor. This 6.2 will run 2-300,000 miles if I don't hot rod around in it. It also gets 20 Miles to the gallon.
Ok thanks. I was just curious cause I have an 87 and I am thinking of replacing the square purolator filter with a canister water separating filter like a wix or baldwin or something.
beautiful truck wish mine was that nice mines 2weel drive and a 1ton i want a 6.2 but i settled for a 366 TD big block, i might do a 4wheel drive conversion
Mine would also start to 20 below without being plugged in with very little cranking. it would take a couple tries but mine didn't start like yours until it got a pretty good bit below zeroMake sure the cold start solenoid is working it's the electrical connection top foreward center of the injector pump. you can set it to work off a toggle switch if it isn't working right
@KeeperofTheMountain Did you try turning over the glow plugs multiple times? Sometimes when it's below 32 I turn my plugs over 3-4 times to get that engine nice and warm (relatively speaking).
@SUPERSANQUAN Chevies are notorious for electrical problems. It sounds like you have a short somewhere as I am sure you have figured out. If you disconect the batteries and then hook a volt meter between the battery and the cable you will see how much electricity it is drawing. Next pull one fuse at a time to see what system has the short. Once you do that it is a matter of tracing out that system to find the short. Mine was the dome light circuit. The door switch was bad.
@KeeperofTheMountain give me a quick reply for a quick question: Do you have a p.s.i. oil pressure gauge there? How much psi do you get on your engine when she´s running hot and at idle? on my 6.2 i get only 10 psi at a warm idle, is it okay or too low?
I have a 1981 to '83 Chevy custom deluxe, 6.2 l diesel 4-speed manual short bed two wheel drive mechanic gave up on it can't get it running sitting for 20 years have any idea what it might be worth, I have it on Portland Craigslist for $3995 no calls, thanks
i wonder if its possible to put on of those on my 88 gmc vandura starcraft, right now it has the 5.7 gas engine in it.also is it possible to put a turbo on that diesel engine?
There should be a metal tag on a bolt of the cover on the back of the rear axle. It will tell you the ratio. As long as it is 3.73:1 or a smaller number 70mph will be no problem. I don't know what axle you have but there are identifiers on line that you can compair with what you have. In a half ton you should get 17-20 mpg with a 6.2. If the truck has a 5.7 diesel then do not buy it unless you plan to change the motor. The 5.7 is not even a good boat anchor.
that actually started very well for being cold out. Its nice to see people NOT reving the engine when it is cold.
Nothing like the sound of a clattering 6.2 in the morning! Nice truck, I love that it has the original wheels and hubcaps.
that is a VERY good looking 6.2
Brilliant truck. My dad owned one here in the UK and my whole school was obsessed with it! I believe it was quite a fast truck too
it wasnt a 6.2 diesel then, they are very slow
Lol probably fast for the UK
Come on old thunder. Love the sound. Had 450,000 miles on mine. But half of that was being towed. :)
That is about right. LOL

I love how them diesel Chevys fires up
This video looks like it was filmed in 1983 and I love it
Thank you

man that signature starting whine and idle brings back so many memories of my dads old 6.2 diesel
Great trucks. I love the old Chevys, and the new ones.
DANIEL DAVIS:that is a heck of an upgrade from that van to that truck the best body style of Chevy

Impressive start, and truck. And it's still sounds "tight" too.
I want one so bad. I love the look of the 73-87 chevys I never knew there was a diesel they made before the 90's.
Love the sound of it! I'll have my temps here soon and I know where to find one of these!!!
I don't see many Chevy & GMC trux with that body style out on the roads anymore like I use to back n the day

but you should check your glowplugs
smoke means more than one do not work

Looks like it has a hydro boost power brake system...that is one cool truck!
Nice truck I gotta 93 extra cab last year of the 6.2 they are good old motors.
Forget the Duramax, the 6.2 and 6.5 were GMs best engines ever!

Getting ready to do a 6.2 to 454 conversion on an 86 k20 with 4speed. Have never had much luck with the 6.2 and have a great 454 on a stand

We don't get that cold here. At least your truck starts in that weather.

@grandprismatic The 4x4 works great! I just wish it had taller gears in the axles.
@1994WN If you listen closely you can hear them cycling. Like you said it can take several times to get them to start.
ah yes the 6.2.... my grandpa has one of these i believe a 82 c25 with a 6.2, he bought in 87 used. has went through 4 motors I believe.
