I was informed by a Salvation Army Soldier, now a prominent figure in the organisation, that in order to join, you had to be invited directly by God. I wonder if this is still the case? I'd ask him, but we've lost touch.

I've believed him ever since, viewing the Salvation Army as an exclusive club given the authorisation required to apply for membership. I'm interested to know how the invitation is transmitted. There was no internet or social media then and available forms of communication were letter, telegram, telephone, (mobile telephones were a fledgling concept), and two way radio. Whenever I see Salvation Army officers I'm intrigued as to who among society are chosen by the Lord to don the uniform, they just seem like normal people to me. But it is often said that the Lord moves in mysterious ways. Thank you for your answer.

That’s not a proposition I have ever heard in over 50 years in The Salvation Army.
