    Dennis Coffey "Scorpio"
Legendary funk/jazz guitarist Dennis Coffey made his debut with Motown's Funk Brothers by playing the distinctive wah-wah part on the Temptation's "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". He has played with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and George Clinton among others. His song "Scorpio" - which he performs here - was an international top ten single and is one of the most sampled tracks of the hip hop era.

Came here because I'm a scorpio. This is superb. A commenter has said 'this performance wasn't soulful at all. More jazzy'. Well I love it just for what it is. Mighty fine music. We scorpios have an understanding.

In a interview years ago Coffey made the point he tried never to play this exactly the same way twice.

Where was this recorded at? And when? Anyone know?

It's a shame that the guitars were under-amplified. Luis Resto is a madman, but I would have liked to have heard Dennis Coffey, too.

Played it too damn fast... the bass player couldn't play the solo at that tempo-- awful performance....

I concur. This was more acid rock slash Jazz.
      Not Soulful or funky.

It's a live performance... doesn't have to be exactly "like the record" (which is fantastic) all the time.
I wouldn't expect Don Was to do Bob Babbitt's insanity. 😊

Was hoping to hear original version. This wasn't soulful at all.
