    Watching him bend the whole neck like a giant whammy bar makes me squeal with delight as a guitar *player,* and squeal with horror as a guitar *owner.*

      remember he has to literally beat every new guitar he gets into shape so it plays the way he wants it to play.

    • @jokervienna6433
      @jokervienna6433 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I´ve heard him say "Don´t try that with a japanese instrument.", just after he bent the neck like that. It is in one of the live versions of "Guitar boogie".

    Awesome reaction! I've met him a few times now and have been to two of his camps, one of them just recently at the end of Sept. He's not only the most talented guitar player on the planet but one of the nicest, most down to earth people you could ever hope to meet. I have a few videos with him and you can see just what I'm talking about. In one he literally sat there listening to me play one of his songs then knew exactly what to say to me afterwards to take my playing to the next level. And did it in a very kind and gentle way. He didn't even have to listen to me but he did. Love him and look forward to meeting him again.

    I saw Tommy and his brother Phill playing as the Emmanuel Brothers in bars when I was at university, then in clubs with the band Goldrush, where he played drums and some guitar. They would do anything from Pink Floyd to Al Di Meola. Last time I saw him was as the opening act for Eric Clapton in Sydney. Absolute legend and a real player. Brilliant every time I saw him.

    I heard it mentioned on one of the reactions was that when Tommy first started (6) and onward for some time, there were no base guitars around and he learned that using his thumb he could get those base sounds. Don't hold me to this as I am no guitarist but I was fortunate to see Tommy on two occasions, once in the rainforest town of Kuranda at the Kuranda Amphitheatre and once at the Cairns Civic Centre where all musicans performed pretty much back then. Kuranda was known as having a fairly substantial hippy population back then and at the Amphitheatre there was a wiff of some (?) sweet smelling stuff in the air. That night he had David Hudson, a digeridoo virtuoso getting the concert off to a great. I have two of Tommy's CDs and One of David's called Digitralia... worth a listen.... thanks for the reaction

    Tommie was a drummer in his family band before picking up the guitar. He uses his guitars as percussion instruments in his live shows. He is one of the most entertaining musicians on planet earth.

    • @cocolossal69

      I don't know why people think this. Tommy learned guitar first and he and his brother Phil both played guitar in the family band. He played drums in Phil's band in the early 80s. He calls himself a drummer who plays guitar, maybe that's where people get confused?

  • @roywall8169

    He does not read music, he learns all these parts by ear and memorizes them.

    I love watching younger musicians react to Tommy. I've played close to 40 years, I ain't nowhere close!!! YEAH! I freak lots of folks pulling the headstock for a bend/dip on my acoustic.

    Cool guitar player! He is a master of his craft. I liked listening and watching him. The musician himself was getting high from his playing, and I was getting high looking at him. Guys, you rarely have such things, which is a pity, because playing guitar is a game on nerves in a positive sense. I like to listen when you, Alan, play during streams on Twitch, I like to listen to Ba Ta. I would love to listen to you, Eric, if I had the opportunity. I want more of these videos! Thank you, dear ones!

    You can tell that Silentchaos15 in your stream, that his favorite version of this isn't with Eric Clapton. Clapton never recorded Classical Gas. It's Mason Williams, the guy who wrote the song :)
    Btw I've seen Tommy live twice, he's just on another level when it comes to play guitar

    Tommy.. Ive met him, twice. He is the most humble, polite (Christian) guy. He performed in the Emmanuel Family Band with his brother Phil (R.I.P.) who was considered the "lead" guitarist.
    Ive heard him play this (and other songs) outside at a 2000 concert. Spectacular.
    Tommy plays Australian made Maton guitars (thats his signature model) and is only one of 3 "Certified Guitar Players" as per the Chet Atkins Foundation (selected by Chet).

    Thanks, I loved all the technical info you gave about thumb pick protection, hand placement, and left hand thumb use. About the wear, he really uses the guitar as a percussive instrument too, doesn't he? And bends an acoustic! I've never seen that before. I know he's self taught, and can't read sheet music, Tommy is an Aussie Legend.

Also like Preston Reed , Ralf Illenberger with or without Martin Kolbe , Peter Autschbach, Roy Roger's, slide guitar, Kelly Joe Phelps slide & vocals ,Joshco Stephan &others

    In the family band Tommy would play drums because his brother was even better on guitar than he was. Amazing family. You have to listen to Tommy performing "Initiation." You will hear sounds you never thought possible from a guitar.

  • @Paldasan
    @Paldasan ปีที่แล้ว

    The appearance of heavy use on the guitar may be intentional. Some of his guitars are for more straight down the line playing, but others he intentionally scuffs in order to aid the percussive elements Those ones are also likely to have a pickup inside the box near the surface to help catch those sounds. His interview with Rick Beato is an eye opener.

    Tommy plays a base line with his thumb and lead with his fingers. He has been earning money from guitar playing since he was 5. Watch his thumb on his left hand

    One of the best guitarists ever. Too bad he sticks to acoustic. If he ever goes electric, he'd be more famous. More kick and passion then. Kind of like Eric Clapton compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan. His guitar hero is Chet Atkins. Not too many guitarists who can play the melody and rhythm parts at same time. He's also very entertaining, a showman. Many guitarists like him show their technicality but boring to watch.
