I have the z6ii as well and you can remove all the display info on the screen simply by just pressing the video record button (Red button). Works all the time.
These kind of videos are actually super SUPER important for our community. It's all the little nuances that are not mentioned in spec sheets or never mentioned or brought up in a review that can actually be significant sources of frustration for the user that can make it a deal breaker. For example, I have a friend who shoots the Z6II (a retired professional) whilst I still do weddings and events with Fuji. I had no idea the playback review (with flash at least) was so slow on the Z6II (he never mentioned it), and now that I see it in comparison with the Fuji system it just makes me appreciate even more the X System. This would probably be a deal breaker for me if I was on the Z6II and if someone showed me what you just demonstrated here with the Fuji and I was a Z6II user I would be pretty bummed. Heck my aging Pentax K-1 from 2016 instant reviews quicker than the Z6II, wth Nikon?! These things can REALLY matter in the field and on the job. Spec sheets only tell half the story, they are boasting points and seldom mention a neg. It's one thing to list of what a camera can do it's quite another thing to show how those things have been implemented and whether it works well or not in reality. You're absolutely right, there is no perfect camera, they all have quirks. Thankfully for me with Fuji I have not really had a deal breaker moment yet with the system. Great video Omar. Next video... to be fair and balanced do your pet hates on the X system :D
That thumbnail got me right away, love it! When I first got my Z6, the OK button confirm thing really threw me off too for a while, I’ve gotten pretty used to it now though. Also the touch screen thing has me putting my focus point on some weird corner from hitting it with my shirt, which is a pain since I usually use the smaller focus points and it takes a while to get it back where I want it. Very weird stuff, but it’s amazing how quickly you adapt to these kinds of things when it’s your main camera. Of course, when you’re shooting two or three other systems at the same time… ;) Great vid.
The first quirk about the viewfinder sensor yep, it does get dust and affects the sensor from time to time. It happens to the older mirrorless as well like my Nikon 1 V1. Cleaning does help! Great videos sir! 😁
Thanks for this video! I’m a Z6II owner as well have been since it was released. I’ve dealt with all of these issues. Especially the dust in eye sensor and the, not selecting ok for changes.
Probably because I've only been a Nikon shooter, the hit "OK" to change thing is completely normal to me. pretty sure this is the way their digital cameras have always been. I like it, as, it's harder to accidentally mess up a setting. The callus? That's just because you're weird. 😅
Canon cameras also require you hit the "Set" button or tap "Set/OK" on the screen to confirm a changed setting. To me it's smart, not weird, to ensure you don't change a setting by accident. My own pet peeve about the R5 is that the top LED displays the camera's last general setting (C1, M, TV, etc.) even when turned off. That drains the battery, as I confirmed just now when checking the menu function on my R5 that I last used a week ago.
The reason why the Z6 ii is different then Z9 when it comes to playback, is that there is a dedicated processor / process that sends the image to the card and the view finder at the same time. This allows it to write and show the image at the same time. On the Z6 ii there is a delay because the write process goes through one channel to the card and the view finder. The image delay is a feature of the Z6 and Z7.
Ok confirmation is standard for Nikon as far as I know (it was the same on my d7100 when I had it and now on D4). Try to half press the shutter when you see the preview, it may speed up things a little.
Fun video. Using nothing but Nikon I have experienced most of those quirks, but a didn't notice them much as quirks (apart from the rear LCD being off when it's supposed to be on, but that's a one time experience, afterwards you know how to deal with it). Instead of quirks it just becomes part of how the thing functions. And yes, I do have those shots of my shoes as well, think it's the bare elbow. I always walk around town with the cam on and hanging from the shoulder and end result are shoes shots. Sometimes it's funny, actually. Wouldn't be surprised if someone will turn it into art one day...
You can set one of the function buttons to go to My Menu, add the most used quick menu features to the to and then you can just push the navigation arrow to the right to confirm any selection.
I tried a Z6 II in a camera shop last week - It was uncomfortable to hold compared with my D750. I hope the new Z8 will be roughly D750 size. Im holding out for Z8 in the hope that 10 bit will be in it. Other bonus would be sensor cover and better AF.
I sort of like the way it feels in the hand, but i know i'm probably in the minority there. The AF is much improved with the latest firmware updates so that camera shop may not have updated yet. And YES, i would love a sensor cover for my Z6ii. The Z9 has one.
Thank you for this! My Zf does these weird things also, and that back lcd also just turns off from time to time. Coming from Fuji this was very helpful! PS: I was on a paid shoot yesterday and my Zf suddenly kicked into Manual Focus when I turned the focus ring on my 50mm AF lens and it stayed in MF. I had to go back to the “i” menu to get it to get back to AF. I think I may inadvertently hit the front custom button (I have it set to focus mode) and turned the back dial. Stranger things indeed!
Hello Omar, thanks for your video and all the great work. I suffer the same issues on my z6 ii. About the delay when you use flash, I think this is a general issue. It takes near a second to show the image you have just taken, regardless if you use flash or not. I don´t understand why needs so much time. Maybe it writes first to the card and then it shows on the back display ? But you can just remove your cards and take a pic, it is the same. I switched to nikon z this years and I´m quite happy with it, but my old camera with slow sd cards had instant review. I hope Nikon release a new firmware and fix all this issues. Regards.
Hey Omar, regarding a clean display when photographing, you can get that but you have to set it up in Controls via the Custom Settings Menu and it’s only selectable for Fn1, Fn2, AF-ON, Sub-Selector Center Press or Movie Record Button. I set it up in the Sub Selector Center Press myself. What you need to do to activate/test: Go to f2: Custom Controls and select one of the above mentioned buttons, then you’ll want to scroll to an option that says Live view info display off and assign it. Now when you’re out and about, you can press whichever button you assigned and get a clean out. Can set it up in Video too using Custom Controls g2 if you want. I use the Sub Selector Center Press for that too, FYI. Hope that helps!
Should have kept watching instead of pressing pause…you do know about it but have all your buttons assigned….guess that serves me right ha. Agree that the assignable buttons are limited but most will put it on Movie Record or Sub-Selector Center Press as those tend not to be used for anything critical. Carry on and good video!
Yeah I once wore mine on a neck strap while wearing a flannel shirt, and it was apparently rubbing on my shirt and getting lint in there. I had no idea what was wrong, and in desperation I blew on the sensor… fixed the problem, as you said.
If you press the record button while taking a picture all the numbers/settings go away and you can see the entire foreground which makes it easier to compose.
Not sure that’s default for all Z cameras but that’s because the Movie Record button was set up to do that via Custom Function menu setting f2. Can change it from Movie button to Fn1, Fn2, Sub Selector Center or AF-On in addition to Movie Record. The actual setting is Live view info display off.
Muy bueno Omar hahaha lo del visor limpio creo que se puede hacer, lo he visto por ahí en algun canal, quizás de steve perry.. no recuerdo. Pero está en la customización de CONTROLS
Thank you for the SHOUTOUT Omar. I really appreciate it. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 I have to agree with you at some of the quirks on the Z6. They really should make a clean view feature cycling thru the display modes. When shooting vertical sometimes. I really don't want to see the info at the bottom there. It's annoying. Firmware firmware firmware NIKON!!! All signs point to you getting a Z9 brother. No more calluses . :) Keep on rockin man. BTW love your sense of humor. .. ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!!!
Hi Omar! I have the z6ii and I love it! There is a simple trick I use for checking any picture the fastest way possible even when using flash, I've set my camera to Continuous H (extended) and I get no screen blackout and no delay on either the EVF or the LCD screen itself. When I use flash I can check my images very fast even if I take a couple of burst shots when I use that method and it really works perfectly! Check it out, you will be amazed!
Regarding the having to hit "OK" to actually make a menu selection is the same on my Leica M cameras. I haven't used my Fuji's in a long time so it's not even a thought for me now (the OK button). Cheers:)
Lol , I had the dust in the viewer issue too . You can set the record button to clear the viewfinder in photo mode . I use flash often and I don’t really notice the delay you mention , it’s almost imperceptible. Sounds like you just need to get more familiar with the camera and more lotion!
Had the same problem with dust on the sensor for back screen vs evf on my XT2, so surprised you haven't had the same. Camera firing when you don't intend it to - that must be the alien in you stomach reaching out when you are busy with the lighting LOL.
Re: the menu selection. You can press OK or to the RIGHT on the Dpad to select it which IMO is more natural. It works like that on Nikon DSLR's too. I personally prefer to have the selection confirmation. Also, I set the movie record button to live view info display off when in stills. What are you using the rec. button for?
Very much enjoying no 'OK' on my Fuji after shooting Nikon for many years. :) Also I never liked the hard, lower RH corner of the Z6 against my palm. I wish for more pleasant ergos to come back to Nikon one day, ala D780 for my larger hands. Z8?
I like the zoom button for focus when doing macro. Yep eye sensor is uber sensitive can be annoying i use playback in evf show details better when checking sharp eyes. I Have deleted many feet photos lol. I also found after doing a wedding my hand gets a bit crampy with the z6 I'm sure it didnt happen with my 750. The mirrorless though small do have some weight notice when Im switching during an event. Pulsing focus is what shits me as well i can't trust eye detect in backlight scenes, 1.4 is better but not yet on par with sony i think as far as mirrorless eye detect.
One issue I have with the z6ii is I always seem to open the door to the memory cards by accident. Again, I'm guessing this is just the weird way I hold it but at least I don't get a callus!
The information on the back screen can be toggled on and off by pushing the video record button while in photo mode, (the red one next to the shutter button). I think that’s the default setting.
I found another weird quirk which seems to be in both the Z6 and Z6 II. Every now and then the camera takes a second picture even though I'm in single shutter mode and also don't have any of the bracketing modes activated.
Fun video Omar, thanks! What camera are you shooting the video with? The AF was excellent (Finger shots). I'd love to see a "My favorite system for..." video from you! Also I'd love a review with the A7iv and Z6ii from your perspective. The Z6ii was a... "stop-gap" camera for me to see what platform I'd jump on and the A7iv was what I was expecting to get when it launched, but I was a bit underwhelmed by some of it's specs (Screen Rez!). Fuji has also been in the running, and the X-H2S looks phenomenal, but it's always the lenses that pull me back to Sony (and the customization). The Tamron/Sigma offerings are so good at the moment. The 3-way rear screen is also a huge factor for me. Everyone has their preference along that polarizing topic, but most of my landscape and Americana work utilize extreme angles for out of the ordinary compositions and I need the screen placement choices. After a year using the Z6ii, I'm still in love with Nikon's colors like I've always been, but it's still far more.... fiddly to get what I want than the A7iii I had rented.
Agree with all your quirks except the palm rash thingy - far too much info Omar!!!🤣🤣🤣 I think the delay in playback drives me nuts the most. Sometimes the camera just seems generally slow to start up and turn on the screen. A bit annoying. Apart from that I just accept everything is the way Nikon have purposely made this camera to work and I'm fine with it. But good to hear you point all these things out because now I know it's just not me. This is surprisingly reassuring for me. Good work!
Never been able to embrace touch screens on a camera. It's designed by people in a lab and does not actually take into account how people really use their cameras in a dynamic changing environment. On my Fujis, being a left eye dominant shooter, my nose kept changing things, focus points, white balance, anything that could be activated by skin on screen contact. I've disabled every touch screen on all my cameras and all is well.
I am curious as I was always taught to never change lenses with power on for dust reasons, and when I forget and change it with power I have a ton more specs. Having a Z6ii myself, is it okay to do that or do you have event photography reasons to leave power on?
Nikon has great cameras and lens. Z6 - great camera, but has problem with user experience. I use Canon EOS R6 for my TH-cam videos. It is fantastic camera. I love it))))💙
I tried switching to Canon this year and it just made me realize how good the Fuji's are. I'd like to try a Nikon but I think it would be the same results.
An annoyance for me. I shoot the Z7II. I don’t shoot auto iso very often. You cannot set this to a function button. No easy way to change minimum shutter speed in auto iso. You cannot put it on the quick menu. In continuous focus the focus area does not go green. The viewfinder triggers with rain drops. I got bemused with that when I first had the camera. I agree with you is where are the firmware upgrades for the Z6ii & Z7II. We seem to be forgotten. Errrrrrrrrrr.
Nicky the best workaround I’ve found for changing auto ISO minimum shutter speed somewhat quickly is putting “ISO Sensitivity Settings” at the top of your “MY MENU”, then set one of your function buttons to “Access top item in MY Menu”. This is yet another case where my Panasonic G9 gets it right. You can program one of the d-pad directions to go straight to the minimum shutter speed setting.
Changing the auto ISO settings is somewhat involved (as mentioned above by Joel), but turning auto ISO on or off is extremely easy: ISO button + front dial
@@ogonzilla Bummer for me too. Thankfully the Z 9 allows for that but has to be turned on. Hope that trickles down to future generations going forward as it’s been explained to me that prior Z cameras to the Z 9 can’t do that.
Nobody is perfect 😉It would be rather easy to fix all these minor quirks, and without them, yes, this camera would nearly be a perfect one 😇 I love it for almost everything: It's ergonomics, the funcionality, and of course the quality of the images it produces.
Srsly Omar... 😑 I'm sitting over here, trying to not give in to Nikon's summer sale on a Z6II kit. A-ha! Omar has weird experiences with the camera, he will dissuade me for sure. 😁 But nope. Just generic weird stuff, nothing disastrous. 😌
I'm considering a Z6 (checks all the boxes) and though I've held one I haven't fully grokked the size of it. I always carry a bag. Is the Z6 feasible as a EDC with a small prime? (Nice video as always!)
That’s the problem: a “small prime”. If you are ok with 28 or 40mm, you’re all set. Otherwise the f/1.8 S Nikkor lenses are pretty big, almost ridiculously so, like Sigma glass. Adapting manual lenses doesn’t help because the FTZ adapter makes the total length the same as the f/1.8 S primes. The body itself is the same size as my micro4/3 G9, so no worries there. If size is your main concern I wouldn’t buy a full frame system other than a Leica if you’re rich.🤑
@@jacksonjackson9474 they are great lenses, no doubt. I own both. But I remember in like 2010 when everyone was saying mirrorless would be so much smaller than “big bulky DSLRs”. LOL.
@@joeltunnah Yeah, the only thing that looks minimalistic (or at least low-key ) on the Z6 is the little Voigtlander the Leigh and Raymond demonstrated. I've been happy with mft from Oly, 1 inch Sonys, and aps Fujis, and feel like it is time to have the ff experience. But I don't need to make a living with it and don't want a huge camera. Maybe it's time to go with a used Sigma fp with the funky viewfinder...
@@earlfenwick that’s the frustrating thing about full frame mirrorless… they aren’t huge cameras at all, in fact they’re quite compact. It’s the damn lenses. I do street and documentary type photography, and I’m very close to selling off my Z6ii and just continuing on with my two Panasonics, G9 and G95. If I have to buy f/4 zooms, and f/2 or f/2.8 primes for the full frame just to keep it reasonably sized, what have I gained?
I had to turn off the chimp mode, when I was shooting dog agility it was slowing up the camera too much. I really like the zoom buttons! And I still accidently turn on the tracking box just with the default OK button. Annoying. Slows me down and it takes a while to remember how to kill it (never use it so I never remember the kill button - it's one of the zoom buttons). Yah, that eye sensor is way too touchy. :P
Do you ever go to take a photo, and then your shutter gets stuck but it kinda fixes itself? I shoot on two seperate z6 bodies and both of them experience this issue when I'm shooting events
My BIG GRIPE on the Z6ii is that I am not able to lock my focus point wherever I would like it to stay. I am constantly touching the toggle button and moving the focus point to locations I do no want at. I don't want to have to relocate it every time I go to shoot. Nikon please give us a solution in the next software update, this is very annoying!!!!!!!!!
Ah yes the back screen turning on and off because of dust in the front sensor can be a pain. I then get into a frenzy of blowing at the sensor eyepiece which over time ends up getting water droplets on it. About the camera taking pics on its own getting random pictures for me since I got a portrait grip I accidentally trigger that portrait trigger while walking.
I have this one too now. blah. the ok thing this wasn't an issue with the dslrs I have, but yes it's bugging me too. the grip. OMG z6ii is soooo small bull crap.. for me all mirrorless cameras are annoying to hold, and this one is one of the good ones... I get your calus, I m getting that grip too, tx top tip that one lol.
Haha you have different problems than me. I have fat short fingers. You have long slim fingers. So using the front 2 buttons for me is kind of a pain, but they are very useful I just have to always re adjust my grip to use them. So that gets annoying. But I've never had a Calais on my hand from the grip, that's pretty weird... But I have more manly hands so I'm used to rough grips 😉 (lifting weights) But I don't hold a camera for hours. I'm a get to my subject, shoot, and go! I don't have much free time these days haha.
I was wondering if anyone had seen this or if it was just something that I was doing. every once in awhile I either hit something or the focus peaking turns itself on without doing anything and the only way I have found to get it off is to turn the camera off and back on. sometimes several times. anyone else?
Yes to the display button also clearing the screen! It just seems logical for a button labeled “display,” right? I also wish all the buttons were customizable.
Can't believe you're really looking for an instant response from the camera when using flash.. SLOW DOWN!!! relax. SET the TOUCH AF SCREEN to AF ONLY ...
most of the stranger things that your are facing is because either you have switched from an another system or because of your own errors please gulp it down and do not blame it on nikon please.
Maybe you should learn to use your gear - instead of just complaining. If you are a pro you know how to use the camera you bought. If not, well then you are not a pro 🥱
I have the z6ii as well and you can remove all the display info on the screen simply by just pressing the video record button (Red button). Works all the time.

Yup same callus happened to me on the Z50, one reason I sold it. Also have that problem with the Fuji bodies too, they give me hand cramps.
Nikon has always had that press OK to confirm. But it only happens on important changes sorta like a, "are you sure?"
Sorry for the obscure question Omar, but what is your watch? Best videos on TH-cam by the way!
Re: the menu selection. You can press OK or to the RIGHT on the Dpad to select it which IMO is more natural. It works like that on Nikon DSLR's too. I personally prefer to have the selection confirmation. Also, I set the movie record button to live view info display off when in stills. What are you using the rec. button for?
Did you select 'OK' for the callus?
Hola Omar
Tengo una D610 y quiero cambiar por una mirrorless, estoy entre la Sony IV y la Nikon Z7 II. Aún así me recomendarías la Z7 II?
The information on the back screen can be toggled on and off by pushing the video record button while in photo mode, (the red one next to the shutter button). I think that’s the default setting.
Ah, I see. Thank you
I found another weird quirk which seems to be in both the Z6 and Z6 II. Every now and then the camera takes a second picture even though I'm in single shutter mode and also don't have any of the bracketing modes activated.
Is it Raw + JPG?
@@ABEARSOULJA Nope just RAW.
Awesome video, just awesome. And i am not even a Nikon user
I have watched Stranger Things.
Jokes apart, nice to see you review some non Fuji stuff. Please keep up the good work. Best wishes!
Hey Omar, curious to what grip you got that's mentioned at the 4:55 mark?
Thanks = )
??
thanks for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. no mention of weirdness with the AF? thumbs up.
Agree with all your quirks except the palm rash thingy - far too much info Omar!!!🤣🤣🤣
I think the delay in playback drives me nuts the most. Good work!
You are funny. Love you man!
Yep. First setting I change on a new camera is completely disabling the touch screen.
I can't see viewing screen to begin with on any camera. I just look through view finder
I am curious as I was always taught to never change lenses with power on for dust reasons, and when I forget and change it with power I have a ton more specs. Having a Z6ii myself, is it okay to do that or do you have event photography reasons to leave power on?
have you set the LCD timeout to longer time
Nikon has great cameras and lens. Z6 - great camera, but has problem with user experience. I use Canon EOS R6 for my TH-cam videos. It is fantastic camera. I love it))))💙
I've got a z6ii
Love it, seriously, love it.
Quirks? It's gottem
I tried switching to Canon this year and it just made me realize how good the Fuji's are. I'd like to try a Nikon but I think it would be the same results.
Can you explain bit more why please ? I'm doing my research long time now and I can't take the decision at which brand to follow
Forgot to mention the no-green in continuous. I've mentioned that before...good one.
Why don't you use some El Cheapo battery grip? You shoot twice as long and the handling problems with larger hands are gone. :-)
But nope.
@@joeltunnah All facts here. I was blown away by the size of the 50mm and the 35mm. However, they are amazing and I do love them.
What grip are you using on your Z6ii?
So far no thankfully.
I think I saw a Nikon SLR in Stranger Things Season 4, don’t remember which episode.
Episode 2 had one.
I said "YES" so many time during this video! Love my Z7ii but that baby is wierd some times.
On our Z6 i, for the life of me I cannot review the shot I took on the LCD when using the viewfinder.
I will like to see a compared Nikon Z6II and the Z5 in real use in 2023
I have this one too now.
blah. the ok thing this wasn't an issue with the dslrs I have, but yes it's bugging me too.
But I have more manly hands so I'm used to rough grips 😉 (lifting weights)
But I don't hold a camera for hours. I'm a get to my subject, shoot, and go! I don't have much free time these days haha.
Yes
Switch to the R5 Omar
Yeah team Fujifilm.
Hello Mcfly 🤣🤣🤣
🙏🙏for a 👍show
I was wondering if anyone had seen this or if it was just something that I was doing. every once in awhile I either hit something or the focus peaking turns itself on without doing anything and the only way I have found to get it off is to turn the camera off and back on. sometimes several times. anyone else?
Totally could’ve added that one! Lol. It’s when you bump the focus wheel on the lens it goes to manual focus. Happens at the worst times.
@@ogonzilla Thank you very much. Wasn't sure what it was.
Yeah, sure...blame the camera for the callus on the hand :) . How is your vision?...lol
It happens when I hang the Z6 around my neck and it shoots on its own. Some sort 'gatillo teta.'
Mine only when using flash. STRANGE...
Strangest thing my Nikon Z 7II does is it costs a lot! So I don't have one... yet...
yo no veo na, toy siego 😂😂😂
Yes to the display button also clearing the screen! It just seems logical for a button labeled “display,” right? I also wish all the buttons were customizable.
Also every option should be assignable to every Fn button. They weirdly limit it.
Can't believe you're really looking for an instant response from the camera when using flash.. SLOW DOWN!!! relax.
SET the TOUCH AF SCREEN to AF ONLY ...
The camera is cursed, just like Hawkins!😉
I really don't trust my z5 for any sport works. Even in broad daylight 😅
I have shot wrestling and jiu-jitsu with my Z5 and a adapted 70-200mm Sigma lens on it with a great hit rate. I think you should try it.
that's some weird shtoff...
I actually use the zoom buttons, particularly for fine manual focus.
most of the stranger things that your are facing is because either you have switched from an another system or because of your own errors please gulp it down and do not blame it on nikon please.
Never had these strange phenomenon with original Z6. Curious😃
D780 ..

Maybe you should learn to use your gear - instead of just complaining. If you are a pro you know how to use the camera you bought. If not, well then you are not a pro 🥱
