    Tony I feel your pain about Oxford. Where I live (Exeter, Devon) in my neighbourhood we had a very similar thing for about 3 years, until it got ditched a couple of months ago. Basically all residential roads surrounding my road were blocked by barriers and bus gates, which by the way had cameras guarding them. Myself and everyone in my neighbourhood had to do a completely unnecessary detour to get from Exeter’s main roads to our houses, it was disgusting.

Trunk Roads are paid for out if general taxation, so pedestrians cyclists, horse riders and motorists all pay the same and yet it is the motorists that cause the most wear, tear and damage to our roads. Every pedestrian or cyclist on our roads is one less motor vehicle wearing them out so a little less on our tax.

    The actual way around that part of Oxford is the turn right where you turned right from Thames Street, then right again, to come around the other side of the courthouse, then stop at the end or turn right ending up at the same place but from the other direction. The mini one way system is set up that way to speed up buses going to all the bus stops in St. Aldates. Most cars are continuing on to the shopping centre, a car park or the train station. The original intent of those "baby on board signs" has been completely lost over the years. The idea was that when you put the baby into the car you put the sign up, when you took the baby out you took the sign down. They were supposed to alert emergency services to the presence of a baby so it would be actively searched for. It started after a tragedy in Canada where the (unconscious) adults were rescued and the baby who has hidden in the wreckage was not.

      @@ditch3827 just give up, you spout the same crap every time we see a stupid person who doesn't think "where is the safest place for me to run". Yes, they can run in the road, but if they weren't, a dangerous motorist could not put them in danger, could they?
      Also, on a road like this with parked cars and other obstructions, do you really expect us to drive behind them at 4 mph and not go past when we can, even if it is less than 2 metres, because that defeats the purpose of us having a car in the first place. It isn't realistic, is it? You must never have driven a car in your life the way your views are formed. I walk, drive and ride bikes so I can see from every perspective. Whoever designed the highway code must never have driven in their life, like with most government policies as they never seem fit for purpose these days.
      Please forget the highway code for 2 seconds and just think about the safe and considerate thing to do. All road users need to be considerate of each other which to me says a certain give and take, i.e., if motorists have to act as to not put pedestrians in danger (which I agree with, I don't want to run anyone over), then pedestrians should be considerate to motorists and move out of the way and let us enjoy the advantages that we pay to have (paying doesn't give us greater right to use the road than pedestrians, but please let us enjoy the advantages of getting places quicker). Yes, there is no law regarding that, but we are British and are supposedly very courteous to those around us, are we not?
      Read these from lawyers who advise how pedestrians and motorists should act towards each other. It isn't just me with this view, people in the legal profession share the view too.

      You're so fond of rule H2, how about you read rule H1 as well. Rule H1 - It is important that ALL road users are aware of The Highway Code, are considerate to other road users and understand their responsibility for the safety of others. None of this detracts from the responsibility of ALL road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, to have regard for their own and other road users’ safety. If they were at the side of the road, 9 times out of 10, the car would overtake and squeeze them into the island or overtake on the roundabout! If i was in that same place cycling by myself I would move into the middle of the lane to protect myself too.

      The flashing yellow beacons mean "advisory" if shown with a speed, but "mandatory" if shown with a diagonal arrow (move to the indicated lane), or a bent arrow pointing ahead and left (leave motorway at next exit). Closed lanes should use a cross and red beacons. Mandatory speed limits are shown with matrix signs that emulate the standard "red circle" speed limit signs.

    Hope this helps you, and others, that have been fed false information about how the roads are paid for
    All tax payers pay for roads, not just motorists. Those who pay income tax and those who pay council tax are the ones who pay for roads, and that’s not just motorists. And anybody who buys anything in Britain also helps to pay for roads because VAT also contributes to the national coffers. Businesses which pay business rates also contribute into the national coffers. And that’s where the money for roads comes from: the consolidated fund, the treasury’s pot of cash that pays for everything. No taxation in the UK is ring-fenced i.e raised by one set of users, and spent on that set of users

    • @thelondondashcam
      @thelondondashcam  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe I didn't explain it very well but I think too many people are missing the point here, I as a motorist have to pay to be on the road legally, Insurance, MOT, Tax, Congestion Charge, Toll roads, not to mention a driving license. Cyclist and Pedestrians don't have to pay any of that to be on the road.

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@thelondondashcam You have just explained it very well in this comment and I must admit the comment is rather disappointing. I’ll try and go through it as much as I can.
      Liability insurance is a legal requirement to pay for health and property damage in the event of a collision. Cyclists will have home insurance that covers this and some will have specific cycle insurance. Most motor insurance also comes with uninsured protection to cover for those that are not insured which believe it nor not is also drivers. Sometimes in error not realising they don’t have drive other vehicles on their policy but uninsured nonetheless
      An MOT is only required on vehicles over 3 years old or younger than a certain age (can’t remember the year off the top of my head but 1978 rings a bell). This is to make sure the vehicle is in a safe condition to be on the road and hopefully catch any defects before they become an issue. That stranded vehicle in this compilation looks like control arm failure which would be picked up on an MOT as starting to fail
      By tax I assume you are referring to VED. This is an annual payment for using the road mostpy based upon emissions. If you don’t want to pay a high amount, get a vehicle that doesn’t pollute as much.
      Nobody is forcing you to drive in a congestion charge area or use a toll road. That is your choice. Having spent many years driving in London the biggest cause of congestion was motorised traffic, not cyclists or pedestrians
      As for having to pay to obtain a licence, are you really having a grumble about that? The roads are bad enough as it is without contemplating removing the need to have a licence
      I would have hoped someone with your number of followers would be promoting sharing the roads not trying to further promote the “us vs them” agenda with this false narrative

    • @thelondondashcam
      @thelondondashcam  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well I've got to say you've just proved my point and I feel I have to correct you in a few matters here.
      I have home insurance but it doesn't cover me in my car I have to have a separate insurance for that unlike cyclist, so what does that mean yes it means I pay and they don't.
      You talk about my insurance having uninsurance cover if they hit me my insurance will pay, but there's an excess to my insurance and I also lose my no claims bonus because of an uninsured cyclist.
      MOTs wrong again I have to have my MOT done every six months from new because I am a private higher driver, a test that a cyclist does not have to have doesn't have to pay for so again it's something I pay for and they don't just so I can be on the road legally.
      It really is disappointing that you actually brought up home insurance as their insurance that really was disappointing.

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@thelondondashcam One reason for seperate insurance is due to the claims being much different. Most cycle claims are between a few hundren into low thousands whereas car insurance claims are usually from the low thousands up to hundreds of thousands as car do more damage that a cycle. Do some research into how insurance works. I recommend shopping around for you lr insurance if you pay excess on uninsured claims, I have no excess in any claim deemed not my fault as that is recovered from the central MIB fund. Another reason is little Susie, a 4 year old out with her parents, happily cycling along. Do you expect her to be paying full insurance? Let us get to the real issue here, you have been reading about mandatory registration, licensing and insurance for cyclists haven’t you? It doesn’t work. Every country that has introduced any such scheme has abandoned the scheme as it costs more to run the scheme than is raised
      As for MOT’s, that is your career choice and honestly it is good that private hire vehicles are inspected every 6 months. After all, you have the lives of others in your hands.
      I am sure the fares you charge cover these additional costs you have as you would’ve known about them before taking that career. Who knew different careers come with different costs
      Why is it disappointing I brought up home insurance? You claim, along with others, that cyclists need insurance when most already do. But like vehicles, there are some that are uninsured
      These are the costs of driving. It is a privledge not a right

    • @ianmason.
      @ianmason. 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually many of the cycle lanes, traffic "improvement" schemes, LTNs and the like are paid for out of funds from civil enforcement of traffic contraventions. There is a legal requirement that the various authorities that collect those fines put any surplus from civil enforcement into ring fenced funds that may only be used for such things. One of the reasons that we see such a rush on those sort of schemes is that some local authorities have amassed an embarrassing amount of money in those funds.

    I have a theory about all the weird traffic schemes, cycle lanes and so on that you refer to. We do need somebody to do traffic planning, so councils hire one or more people to do this. All is fine for the first year or two, as they fix all the issues in their area. Now, though, they have a dilemma: do they admit that there's nothing left for them to do, and lose their jobs - or do they keep inventing crazier and crazier schemes to justify their continued employment? I think you can guess which they will do, and that completely explains the many bonkers road layouts we encounter daily.

Not that bothers me much, I ride a motorcycle and have a very attitude when it comes them.. if there is a Fireblade sized gap, then I use it.. Running a -2 tooth sprocket on the front cog, so less top end, and more acceleration by the time most get time to react, I am already well gone (0-60 in 2.5 seconds) Somehow I got a clean licence... started riding in '79 and I am 60... A lot of other road users, in particular cyclists, pedestrians and those suicidal scooter riders (legal and illegal electric things), lack what I would call "personal responsibility". They behave like they own the road and then they make YOU responsible for their safety even though the Highway Code says that you have to take responsibility for YOUR OWN safety while using a public highway.
