It kind of sucks to have a job, where your own performance doesn't matter. She is entirely dependant on her boss doing good enough to be kept around.

Imagine coming home, telling your husband you might get kicked from work even though it's not your fault, and the first thing he does is yell at you. Sometimes Doug was such an insensitive husband.
My least favorite part of the show has always been seeing Doug be overly confrontational to Carrie over the span of it all.
I know her general toughness and sarcastic temperament could under one's skin but Doug did have a bad habit of trying to punish her over things that didn't warrant such explosiveness.
It's a comedy show and it provided for funny moments, no? Plus Carrie often came across as a b*itch too so they balanced it a bit.
IA, that kinda bothered me at times, it stops me thinking that this was an all time great show. Doug was a misogynistic a-hole

Man, when money gets tight it ain’t a fun ride I tell ya! It’s like a nightmare only you don’t snap out of it.. you live every bit of sec of it. How does that sound? Things are still tight a bit but better than that morning when I woke up in the morning of a holiday week with nothing on us but eggs and bread in the fridge and my son’s birthday was due in that particular week. A once-in-a-lifetime event, you know and I .. had plans for it before we went broke. I counted coins still wanted to bring him any kind of treat no matter how small just so he would someday say mom stood strong with love and care on her hands.
Hang in there if you’re facing a rough time.. it will clear out you know! It just can’t pour forever.. the sun shall rise! Praying everyday, and believing!

If you 'very specifically need to know if they said dead wood', then it doesn't matter if they used that term or not. You're already screwed. If just the fact that they *might* have mentioned it sends you into such a panic, you haven't been doing your job right and you're hanging by a thread already, even if they didn't use the term.
Carrie was right when she called him an idiot, even if we disregard the casual friday bit that already set him up as losing his grip on things.
not necessarily. if you are too hard working you are a threat. if you dont suck up you are a threat. nothing really fair in most companies.

Not in this circumstance because Carrie didn't do anything wrong but even hot women can get you arguing back like the potential for sex doesn't exist anymore.
It's not like she can't just get another job as a legal secretary.
If it was during the recession, very difficult if not impossible to get another job once you were laid off depending on your age of course also
@@katieb.9556 I don't know when the show was filmed but there is literally thousands of lawyers in any given town. I'm not saying it's right but an attractive woman like Carrie should have no problem,
It is never that easy to "just get another job". Besides with, its not just about being employed. There are salary variances, benefits, and other factors to consider. Carrie and Doug make roughly about the same income, and that allows them to more or less comfortably afford their home and provide elder care for Arthur, but without that second income they'd be in serious trouble. Even if she gets another job at another firm, there's no guarantee they'd hire her at the same salary she was making at Kaplan, Hornstein & Steckler.
I think that was another time. A time when jobs were rare.

@@thedastone1939 - After she got fired along with Mr. Presann, who also worked under Mr. Kaplan, she was jobless for a minute, then started working for a real estate law firm under a woman (remember the episode where Kirsty Alley guest starred?). Next thing you know she's back working for Mr Kaplan in the second to last and last seasons.

I never understood why they made such a big deal out of it. Of course it's not a nice situation to be fired but they act like Carrie's life depends on it. It's not like she can't find a new job. Besides, she has a husband who goes to work too, it's not like she's going to end up on the street.
It true but remember Doug is lazy he work but still lazy he not good with money it like Carrie not only she work she pays the bills do the groceries do the cooking do laundry cleaning the house Doug need help around the house same as Arthur maybe she wouldn't have such bad attitude all the time if she has some help around her

@@lostvampire69 Normally a married couple that has been working for years would have some emergency savings. But Doug and Carrie never cut corners, as you could see from the mold episode. Later it came out that Carrie got a settlement from the law firm, so their reaction is even more absurd.
I wonder why the show's producers decided to have Carrie change jobs. The episodes with her new job at the real estate firm weren't half as funny as the episodes at the law firm. Especially Pruzan was a great side characte while her colleagues at the real estate firm were boring.
