Just to clarify some things that came up. Just in case some people haven't seen Kengan Ashura or read the Manga and don't necessarily know the context for things. Kanoh's lack of leg-locking while mounted, and lack of good ground control wasn't a lack of understanding on the author's part. It's to show that Kanoh, while being a fighter with serious skills and incredible conditioning, is not actually experienced in this kind of combat, and is figuring it out as he goes. Closest comparison is to Yujiro Hanma, except Kanoh's observably learning and developing in fights as he goes, instead of just having those abilities credited to him so he looks strong. It actually in canon makes people quit the Kengan matches, because the idea he's learnt, mastered and countered their best techniques in the space of seconds psychs them out. Similar to this, is why he's okay with being mounted and beat on for portions of this, while just watching. The dude's incredibly physically and mentally conditioned. He can take punches far heavier then Okubo can give, and stay up. Even the fake shot to the pretty hard overhand, which physically tilts him, just surprises him. Doesn't even come close to knocking him out, he's just shocked that it happened. Okubo, being an experienced MMA fighter, knows to look at his opponents' previous fights. He picks out that Kanoh's almost always fought on his feet, so he puts it into his advantage by going to wrestling and groundwork to tie him up and give himself advantage. Unfortunately, Okubo doesn't know about Kanoh's observational abilities, or Kanoh knows enough to avoid being put into an impossible situation and to avoid losing control. Kanoh is able to stay in, gets enough time to study Okubo's strategy and techniques, attempts to end the fight, fails, reads the pattern, provides a fake opening that he knows Okubo will take, counters with the right while Okubo shoots, then throws him to take mount, but Okubo's already out. The scary face is due to some form of Dissociative Identity Disorder that he picked up to cope with some of the worse things he's done. Because despite being almost entirely alienated from modern society, almost never socialized and looking like the God of all Edgelords, he's quite a nice person. Hence the transition from being quite reserved and tactical, into being very aggressive and controlling. It also allows him to use his "Formless" style of striking (think like what Systema was supposed to be, mixed with drunken boxing), which makes it harder to read what he's doing, harder to react to and block blows, and lets him provide a false opening to Okubo without it being a clear trap. Amusingly, there is some suggestion that his D.I.D makes him even more difficult to knock out. He has a couple situations where he takes pretty bad blows and his other half comes out, slightly confused. Considering it's an anime, he's either been psyched out to the point of switching up, or he's a two-stage boss and you need to beat both halves.
Yes, and he uses his formless style to come up with countermeasures against specific techniques, like Okubo's MMA or Gaolan's boxing-muay thai combination
well, that Dissociative Identity Disorder is his way to cope with the battle royale match that make him who he is, other than that Kano is quite a good person and a loyal warrior
Also, him not having a reliable style that he believes in becomes a detriment as he slowly learns more and more, he starts becoming this weird combination of too many techniques which causes him to start getting slow as he starts to get confused over which punch to throw, which style's punch is best suited etc
@@familyguysofunny1933 hes basically that shapeshifter but he's way better because instead of shapeshifting and instantly learning the enemies' moves, he adapts and counters the enemies' attacks
I love it. Kengan Ashura is the GOAT. The fact that the the staff and author actually practice these things irl and then set them on paper really shows how dedicated they are to a point of realism.
I know neither of you specialize in boxing but if you could have a boxer friend breakdown Hajime no Ippo that'd be amazing. It's historically accurate with the boxing techniques shown like the frog punch and the Dempsey roll. I think expansion of style would a great asset to this channel

On the Agito full mount defence, Agito is a forward thinker with his Martial Art style (his grin is when he switches to Formless style) and based on what Okubo has done with his MMA fighting style and set so far. Agito used a swaying double-arm boxing technique to think about his next move. Letting Okubo lean forward more while putting more strength in the punches, allowed Agito to hip-pop Okubo off of him, knowing that any other move or counter would put him back to square one.

I love martial arts anime like Kenichi, Hajime no Ippo, Fist of the Northern Star, and Baki but hands down Kengan Ashura has the most "realistic" representation of martial arts while still maintaining an air of fiction with the way they fight.

If i remember correctly, Okubo got out of that hold because Agito let him, I forgot if it was because he wanted a challenge and handicapped himself or if it was because he wanted to evolve by seeing Okubo at his best
1:07 I’m glad I’m not the only one who was surprised to see how realistic some of the styles in the series were. It always catches me off guard when anime actually takes the time to put in legitimate effort into researching how realistic fighting styles, grappling especially, work in application. Instead of just copy and pasting what dragon ball did and doing the “ORA ORA” thing with the unseeable punches
You give MAJOR kudos to the discord user that suggested you do this. Instant sub. I'm sharing this in some nerd groups as well. This shit is phenomenal content for anime fans. Bravo.
That would be 100% appreciative. We plan to do more Kengan Ashura and anime breakdowns and we'd love to hear some anime fight scene recommendations here or on our Discord.
I do kinda like how Kengan Ashura is what most of us imagined MMA would be originally. Masters of specific martial arts fighting it out together. Unfortunately it too often showed the flaw in most of them. There is no such thing as "Minimum effort, maximum damage" in straight up fighting. Maybe if we had reflexes that were twice what we have now we could see snazzy fighting and reactionary blocks and dodges. Then again Kengan Ashura also does bring this to light as well, with the best fighters generally capable of mixing martial arts to fit their needs. Kanoh is one of them. Ohkubo is a beast as well and easily one of my favorites. I do hope Kengan Omega gets an anime adaption with a high level of quality as well. Would be fun to see the realistic and "unrealistic" battle styles shown. Kanoh has an amazing fight here as well. There's also Sambo which I do not know much about, but what we see in the Manga it looks really efficient.
And then you Julius, a muscular behemoth of a fighter who didn't learn martial arts because he considers them useless compared to raw power. And, unlike similar characters wih a similar mentality, he is not an idiot and knows what he is doing. Indeed, he doesn't need them.
Well they have a good mixture of practical and impractical martial arts. Ohma, Okubo, Cosmo, Agito, Gaolang etc all have very practical fighting styles while people like Kiryu, hair dude, the doctor and a lot of others have some styles which are just anime bullshit
Thank you! We also did Cosmo vs Dudley th-cam.com/video/lDzZPA8XRgY/w-d-xo.html and Cosmo vs Akoya th-cam.com/video/n0iVoMRXjyo/w-d-xo.html so check those out and subscribe to the channel for more!
Also Kenichi, the greatest disciple, is not the most realistic fight wise but they keep the core philosophies and ideas of combat intact. They also teach real ideas like striking range
One thing I love about eren vs armored titan is that while you can see his combat skill improved you can also see he's still has a lot of practice to do. He doesn't magically master martial arts in a relatively short period of time but he does improve

This is such a cool fight and I loved the analysis on it. Definitely going to be watching more of this channel. Also since you guys reacted to an anime fight, maybe you could react to fight scenes in other media too, like videogames. Metal Gear Solid 4 has a really cool hand to hand fight scene at the very end of it that incorporates a lot of throws and strikes. It would be super awesome to see an analysis on a fight like that. Anyway, you guys are great and keep doing your thing.
We are always looking into video game breakdowns. We are huge gamers so feel free to recommend in the comment below or on our Discord. Thank you so much for the comment and support. It really means a lot to us when you engage with the channel!
How about Gaolang Wongsawat's boxing? The so called "hitman" stance. How effective it is in real combat. Could u maybe do an analysis on that fight as well?😐 It was also in Kengan ashura
thomas "hitman" hearns used that style (Perhaps even invented it, not sure myself). It's definetly a good boxing stance however it requires you to be a very skillful boxer in terms of dodging/blocking. I think Floyd Mayweather also uses it to some extension and he is known for his ways of dodging(blocking punches. Alot of your mid section/head will be open for blows but in terms of offense, you can throw punches with your "jabbing" hand from alot more obscure angles, not to mention the famous flicker jab.
Next time do the Eren vs Armored Titan fight from Season 2 Episode 7 of Attack on Titan, it showed several realistic and accurate BJJ techniques, the author even flat out stated he is a big MMA fan. It would be even better if you include the techniques showed in the training flashback mid fight.
I really enjoy seeing these breakdowns. When you go into anime you already know stuff's gonna be exaggerated or straight up fake, but seeing how much real stuff is actually in the mix makes me appreciate the creator's efforts even more. Okubo is supposed to be a textbook MMA fighter, and the creators did an amazing job for that.
Some fights people like bringing up in anime is Psycho Pass, specifically Makishima vs Kougami. Apparently the style of reference is Silat. The other seasons have other hand to hand fights, but they don't get brought up as often. It happens often, enough though, and there are movies, which obviously have even more budget for high gloss fights. Cowboy Bebop and its movie "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" has a few high quality fights. The main protagonist, Spike Spiegel practices Jeet Kun Do, apparently. I'm not sure what the main villain of the movie uses, besides pure anime wat-cha-hai-ya. There's also Real Drive, which had a few hand to hand sequences, but I can't find good clips of it anymore, plus the high budget fights involve androids, so it's hard to tell if it's feasibly realistic. (The TH-cam account Ramsey Dewey did a reenactment of the Kengan Ashura fight. It's pretty hilarious to see done with real people, honestly. They also discussed better mounts, among other stuff.)
@@ScenicFights Of course! I loved it. Another recomendation for breakdown is Cosmo Imai vs Seishu Akoya. Its not all grappling like this fight, but has moments of good grappling.
Ooh! REAL STEEL! Robot boxing! There’s even two underground fights, so a look into the no-holds-barred brawls in the ring with very skewed morals and lots of dirty-blows would be great!

Kengan ashura and baki are my favourites ever, I'm obsessed. I've literally watched the anime 10 times and i have read the manga too. There is a great story and martial arts
Yes they do, the martial in the raid 2 is a close relative to kali, martial in the raid is Silat Indonesian martial art The first raid they did was mixed and not really Silat, it was more of krav and judo, the only thing that was Silat in the first raid was the hallway scene and the fighting the mad dog
The fighting in the raid is difficult to cover and breakdown in terms of real life effectiveness simply because there are almost no mma fighters who use Silat. It’s an unproven martial art in the mma world
@@bdpchamp thats true, they say it doesn’t work because in America they are not learning the actual Silat in Indonesia, they say it does work and it’s very effective, but they are not learning the real deal also finding a decent school is difficult to find so that’s why they consider it unproven and not effective, but someone who knows kali might be able to break it down cause it does come from the family roots like Arnis, Eskirma, and Silat

If i remember correctly, Okubo got out of that hold because Agito let him, I forgot if it was because he wanted a challenge and handicapped himself or if it was because he wanted to evolve by seeing Okubo at his best
I didn't even think about the whole pattern thing and that made me realize how differently a martial artist thinks.

Also since you guys reacted to an anime fight, maybe you could react to fight scenes in other media too, like videogames.
Very effective in boxing, but weak against sports involving kicks.
Better wait until they animate gaolong vs the fang
Floyd Mayweather fights with a similar stance in some of his fights but mostly when he's defending.

"This makes breaking his arm" *zooms in* "very easy"

It's human chess.
It’s a whole other type of brain power. An MMA fighter might not be able to write a thesis on physics but if you asked them how to fight and why to use techniques and each step the achieve a submission. A champ could probably write a thesis on that.

My background being in wrestling, both the fight scene and your breakdown was a special delight to watch! Chad's a bloody good instructor, gotta say
Funnily enough, we use both version of the hip toss (at least in freestyle wrestling which is what I'm most familiar with, anyhow). What you demonstrated as the judo variant runs under the name and your wrestling variant is what we (at least here in Hungary) call a lecsavarás/wrenchdown. Both got their own niche, wrenching down your opponent is often a better way to lay them out while making them achieve liftoff scores more points and leaves a bit less room for counters.

Kengan ashura and baki are my favourites ever, I'm obsessed. I've literally watched the anime 10 times and i have read the manga too. There is a great story and martial arts
u guys still need to do the raid
Yes they do, the martial in the raid 2 is a close relative to kali, martial in the raid is Silat Indonesian martial art
The first raid they did was mixed and not really Silat, it was more of krav and judo, the only thing that was Silat in the first raid was the hallway scene and the fighting the mad dog
