The final movement of this epic composition is perhaps the most beautiful, haunting and moving piece of music I have yet heard. When Floor's voice soars above the music, it gets me, every time. Tuomas has an uncanny knack of picking the most emotive notes/chords and, just as importantly, the correct instruments to play them. It also helps he has access to one of the best intruments in the band - Floor's voice.
nightwish finally found the mermaid voice they deserved. Tarja was too deep in Opera (but we still miss her) Anette was too warm (fited perfectly like a telle-teller) But Floor is just perfect for this band!
I was surprised it took you this long to get back to them after your initial reaction to Ghost Love Score. I know you did Phantom of the Opera with Tarja, but they have so much more to explore and so many different styles of songs. If you enjoyed this, I'm sure you'll enjoy The Greatest Show on Earth (Tempere 2015 show). Its another long epic multi transitional piece. They have some harder stuff too like Romanticide and Song of Myself. I know you enjoyed Phantom of the Opera with Tarja, you might also enjoy checking out Floor doing an old Nightwish song from the Tarja era where she sings in her opera voice called Stargazers (Tempere 2015 show). Floor is ridiculously gifted. She is a perfect fit for Nightwish imo.
Floor is by far the greatest vocalist I have ever heard. Her voice is enchanting and inviting one minute and then will eat you alive the next. Much like the sirens in ghost love score.
I'd love if he reacted to Tarja's version of Ghost Love Score. Or Sleeping Sun. Definitely shows how much their music has changed but still compliments. Floor is a good choice since obviously there is no going back but it's always nice to nod and look back at the past and experience it a bit. :) Plus opera is really under appreciated and while Floor's semi-operatic voice is great it's not really operatic. Just a nice bridge to the more mainstream voice she has.
This song is probably one of the masterpieces of the century, genre aside. The songwriting, the arrangement, the lyrics, the blend (and contrast) of heavy riffs, piano keys & vocals are absolutely on point. Let's not forget Tuomas has composed 95% of NW songs for the past 2 decades - his creativity and ability to pour emotion into songs is simply amazing. This song is also one of the heaviest (emotional) songs in the NW catalog.
Hey Alex, as you like Nightwish after Ghost Love Score, opera and now the Poet, please react to either Romanticide, or the absolute best song from them: "The greatest show on Earth" (live). This last one is the most perfect song you can ever listen to :)
Alex did quite a lot of Nightwish, so I guess too much more NW would be overkill. Still, Tuomas says "The Greatest Show on Earth" is his masterpiece, this one would be good. I much more agree on Epica, they are the only Symphonic Metal Band that could come close to Nightwish (at one point I had them ahead of NW), and Alex only did one of the weaker songs.
These guys are so lucky to have Floor sing for them. So far the best fit for Nightwish. Coming from a Finn, who was introduced to them while Tarja was fronting.
NO, you will never find a more amazing band in your life. I am so happy you have found the love that we Nightwish fans have been enjoying for many years.
Any reaction to song of myself has to be to studio version since they only do 1st half of song live ( 2nd half of song is a really good poem set to music)
God, family, Nightwish, all three singers, and music in general is what literately got me through being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer at the age of 31. 10 years later, I'm still listening, loving, and enjoying the pure beauty of their music. If you like Nightwish you will love WithinTemptation's Black Symphony. Another amazing band with a lead singer with a beautifully pure voice.
This Nightwish album should have come with a WARNING: "Caution while driving through the mountains with recently purchased Lord of the Rings swords. May cause intense urge to storm the Gates of Mordor". I had to concentrate HARD not to leap from my car with a sword and run Over the Hills and Far Away when I listened to this song for the first time. I totally get "there were two times where I don't even remember being alive".
I can do one better, I spent my honeymoon driving through the South island of New Zealand (specifically Central Otago and the West coast) listening to the Lord of the rings soundtrack, Truly epic. If I knew Nightwish back then , they would have been on the playlist.
I love the way floor can bridge the gab between tarja and annette vocally and and her own spin on top I would love to have seen her perform on imaginerium's-song of myself
Every song they do is a ballad with a story behind it, and when you listen to the lyrics and know the person behind them it all starts to make sense. Tuomas is probably the best poet of our lifetime.
There's no one single video reaction I saw that people left out without feeling the FLOORGASM. As an old fan of her career I feel so happy to see many people finally giving the recognition she deserves. Nightwish is an amazing band but now with Floor they hitted a higher level.
For sure. Her versatility and ability to be a serious beast really punches the female vocal component up to elite levels. She has been seriously overlooked for the last 2 decades.
Floor is amazing. Her powerful voice and charisma at the stage are world class. I think Nightwish is now better than ever before. Also Tuomas seems to get better and better at composing every year. Usually it's the other way.
I know it's been suggested several times by other people, but if you are enjoying symphonic metal, you really need to react to Epica - "Consign To Oblivion (Live at Zenith)". They have some similarities to Nightwish, in that they are the same genre and have a wonderful soprano lead vocalist, but they are a bit heavier, mixing in some harsh growling male vocals (as opposed to Nightwish's clean male vocals (which are also great - not knocking NW in any way, I love them)) and heavier music in general.
This song, in particular this live video, is more than just a performance, it is an experience. You feel every word that is sung by Floor. It is a masterpiece, indeed.
Symphonic Metal is my favourite too, with Nightwish being my favourite band...I've loved them for 15 years and finally got to see them live for the first time at the beginning of this year. Whenever they come back to the USA, you HAVE to go see them play live... hopefully next time I can get VIP tickets. Nightwish - Romanticide live at wacken 2013 Nghtwish - Yours is an empty hope live Nightwish - The greatest show on earth live at Tampere.
To me Nightwish is the best metal band of my time. They have one the greatest composer of our time, now the greatest metal singer and every member of the band is absolute world class at what they do. And I have been in the game since the 80's so yes, I think they are far better than Metallica... or Iron Maiden.. or Black Sabbath... or...
To Hell and Back or Carolus Rex by Sabaton. All of Sabaton’s songs are about historical war info, whether it be the people or battles, To Hell and Back being about the most decorated soldier in ww2 suffering from ptsd upon returning home, and Carolus Rex is about the crowning of King Charles XII of Sweden (very epic)
I meet them before a concert and they were the nicest people I've ever met. My first tattoo is a tribute to them and I can't thank this band enough for saving me.
I dunno, I kind of like the Wembley one more, just because even though Tampere has bigger flames and fireworks, Wembley feels more...special. Especially with who comes up in the end. And the recording quality also just seems better there.
By far one of the most under rated bands of all time (in the US, cause they sure pack houses everywhere else lol). I started as a die hard fan and once Tarja left i kind of lost interest, but Floor has definitely put them back on the map for me.
That intrigued me to hear yr feeling about Tarjas voice! Cuz, I really, really don't care for it at ALL! Especially when Floor is considered to be the best female vocalist alive today!! Bcuz she's got IT ALL!! To me she's PERFECT. And wyd be in ANY TYPE of band. She's got an "open mic" everywhere or anywhere!! But I guess that's why Baskin n Robbins has 51 flavors!?
I was at their show in Helsinki two days ago. This band is the only one who can summon so many different emotions out of me. Have seen them a few dozen times through the years and they are epic. EPIC.
A few dozen times?!?!..I envy you so much. I'm in the USA and I think they are coming here next year and I'm gonna make sure I am there. I don't care where it is here, I'm going to get there. This is something so freaking special. I have all their stuff and I have never seen them live. I'm living it through TH-cam. I can't even imagine being there, but I'm going to get there. It absolutely has to happen.
@@Schnorgldorf Yes, I first saw them in 2007 and I've seen them on each tour here in Finland. For me it's definitely easier to attend their show since they are from here as well. Please do make sure you get to see them! They are larger than life. I have loved them since I was 10 years old.
I saw Floor live at least 50 times over the last 20 years and she never ever disappoints. I met her in real life when she was with After Forever on a couple of occasions and she's awesome. I'm so happy she is doing so well, love her with nightwish, the perfect combination. 😍
Even as one of the most popular metal bands out there, they are extremely underrated for what they do. Not the singers actually, as they get all the credits the deserve, I'm speaking about the songwriting. Compared to a lot, and not just of today, even compared to bands like Queen, Pink Floyd or Led Zepplin the songwriting is brilliant. And Poet and the Pendulum is one of my most favorite Nightwish songs. It got a lot of hate in the past, because of Anette (sadly people downvote the whole song if they don't like the voice singing it. Stupid but human. Additionally Anette wasn't even bad at what she did. People just didn't like the change, which wasn't even because of her. It just happened that Nightwish underwent a small change musically during a time where they had to exchange the voice also. Two single incidents that were seen as one. And I'm sonewhat sure that if Anette hasn't been part of Nightwish, we wouldn't have Scaretale. I don't know why I'm sure about it, but that song is hers.) Luckily it didn't hurt them as a band, and as far as I can say, and as musician myself and therefor someone who spents a lot of time with music, listening to music and analyzing music they have grown over the time. Not that they were bad in the first place, they never were bad. The music always had a certain level of quality. But with prominence comes money and with money comes a higher production level and you can really see how Tuomas and the band are due to that able to create the music as it was meant to be. I think if theyhad the option to do so, their music would have always been this .... bombastic. In fact Poet and the Pendulum is one of the songs where Tuomas shows his brilliance. It feels like so much more than a song, it has the powerful part that catches you, takes you with it, and the soft parts to turn even the most brutal metalhead into a soft teddybear pony. Even if you don't like the song it still impacts you. Which is something I actually was able to see with a friend that didn't like the song, but was completely taken by emotions during it. It was fascinating to watch. - tl;dr Part: The most underappreciated thing about Nightwish is the songwriting. As musician and partially songwriter myself, the music of Tuomas and Nightwish as a whole are comparable to great classics that even go beyond the partially overrated works of Musicians of the 70s and 80s and are at least on par with the greatest works of Queen, Led Zeppling, Pink FLoyd and other comparable bands, with the difference, that Nightwish' songs are almost always that well designed. It doesn't mean that I like all of it, I'm not talking about the taste, I'm talking about the songwriting quality. (If I'd be forced to compare the songwriting at a whole, I'd talk about Mozart, Beethoven or else in comparison, actually.)
Hell yes. I put Tuomas up with Queen and Wasps Blackie Lawless as far as songwriting hes in the top 3 for me. And to top that off his method of using his players as a separate instrument and writing songs to certain tempos and keys to put it in each players upper skill range is incredible. Other than Amaranth I dont think he has written a Thematically purposeless pop ish song.
Tuomas is definitely in the top songwriters I've heard in any genre. Can only really be compared to the greats of classical music or, if you want something more modern, movie score writers.
Man, the first time I heard this song, especially the Mother & Father part, I bawled my freaking eyes out. I still get chocked up when I hear it. Not for any background meaning or anything else, just the pure beauty and emotion represented there, the love of a mother and a father for their child.
Revisiting Nightwish after a 10 year separation that followed a 4 year sabatical (I found the loss of Tarja disappointing). I did it by going to see them in Wembley recently because of your GLS review. Oh. My. Days. Thank you! I am so very pleased to see how far they have come since I first saw them in a crummy little venue in England in 2003. Floor is an amazing frontwoman and the world is a better place for having Nightwish in it!
@@EvelynHannahWilhelmineSedal57 You shouldn't be disapointed with Anette, she was just the interpreter of the band's moment after Tarja left. Dark Passion Play sounds enraged and even grieved (that's one of the things that makes it a hell of an album, by the way), but on the other hand, Imaginaerum is what Annette was all about when Nightwish approached her. You should listen to Scaretale (if you haven't yet, ofc), this is the song that makes her justice.

her voice. yes, intense and powerful. she can pin you to the wall and not break a sweat. or she can bring you to the edge of tears. A true force of song.
I've always (well, since 2004 when I became a fan) found Nightwish's best songs to be the ones that don't follow the typical song pattern or song length. Not to belittle anything else this band does wonderfully, but their song structures are so amazing and unique and that just blows my mind. I'm glad Nightwish is still around stronger than ever. And I'm happy to say that like many others, I'm completely Floored.
Interesting you should equate their music to a soundtrack. Tuomas Halopainen (who does the composition and writing as well) studied heavily in that venue, and a lot of his inspiration comes from that study. He also did the score for a Finnish movie "The Matriarch. (2008)," which, if memory serves me correctly, is when he wrote "While Your Lips Are Still Red." You are absolutely correct about this band. They are definitely all at the top of the Pareto curve when it comes to musical skill and talent. By the way, Splitting up songs into different parts (movements), has been around for centuries, and is a structure used by many great composers like Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. I believe that Halopainen has definitely achieved a similar level of mastery. This song is definitely a future classic for the coming centuries.
Yep, if that song wasn't epic, what is? I have heard this song like a thousand times and every time I try so hard to keep my eyes dry in the ending part, Mother & Father, and I never succeed. So beautiful...! These lyrics is pretty much what his mom and dad said comforting their son, Tuomas, when he got home from the tour totally heartbroken. _Be still my son, you're home - Oh, when did you become so cold? - The blade will keep on descending - All you need is to feel my love - Search for beauty, find your shore - Try to save them all, bleed no more - You have such oceans within - In the end I will always love you_ But still you haven't heard THE Nightwish song yet, aren't you? The Greatest Show On Earth (live at Tampere, Finland 2015). The best 21 musical minutes you'll ever get!

But Tarja was much better in their young albums. For example Oceanborn.
@@Daniel_C_Griffin Can evil fairies be innocent? But I'd absolutely agree, she was absolutely perfect for the album and film.
Exactly. Well said
What about Planet Hell's video in End of an Era?? That's probably one of the most epic intros of any of their songs!
Orgasms
*FLOORgasms. Floorgasms. It's a technical term 👍

Recently got back into nightwish. Gotta say i'm Floored.
Puntastic.
nice
Her name is Floor Jansen. I read in another YT video comments that when she sings, what she induces is called a floorgasm. Lol.
Seeing them live really is a total Floorgasm!!
No ? really, I'm Floored. ;-)
Hey Alex, as you like Nightwish after Ghost Love Score, opera and now the Poet, please react to either Romanticide, or the absolute best song from them: "The greatest show on Earth" (live). This last one is the most perfect song you can ever listen to :)
Wish I Had an Angel or She is My Sin.
Romanticide with Floor singing it is one of my absolte favorites. I'd love to see that reaction.
I am Nightwish fan but dont understand why do you like so much TGSOE... For me, it is good but there are plenty of better ones of NW`s masterpieces.
@Ed Rizzo It might be an headphone issue. I have had that happen before. It usually happens with brand new headphones.
You HAVE to do Romanticide with Floor. Her and Marco are so amazing together.
Please DO IT!
& "Last Ride of the Day" ;)
Now you have to react to The Greatest Show on Earth and Romanticide, both live. And absolutely you have to react to Epica.
Caroline Darko he has reacted to epica before
Alex did quite a lot of Nightwish, so I guess too much more NW would be overkill.

Please react to Nightwish's Song Of Myself at Wacken 2013 and please do the Greatest Show On Earth, that'll blow you away^^
Felix Späth those 2, god they’re good
Felix Späth Song of Myself is one of those songs where I would recommend the studio version because of the added value of the poem.
@@Angelos42 No.. Floor's version at Wacken is crazy good..
Any reaction to song of myself has to be to studio version since they only do 1st half of song live ( 2nd half of song is a really good poem set to music)
SymphoNickbul It IS very good, but only part of it. For a first reaction to it I would love to see him react to the poem part as well.
I swear it's almost as if floor casts spells upon people when she sings, she's just that good.
Dude im dead lmao i couldnt agree more
Scoot over and let me on this bus. I'll bring the salted pork and my ax
I can do one better, I spent my honeymoon driving through the South island of New Zealand (specifically Central Otago and the West coast) listening to the Lord of the rings soundtrack, Truly epic. If I knew Nightwish back then , they would have been on the playlist.
I understand your referance! Nice little easter egg for the fans and it cracked me up! xD
Best comment I've ever read on the internet 😂😂😂 let's hunt some orc!!
Floors voice is magical!
its "FLOOR-gasmic" :)
Merrill Hawkins Floor Jansen is mijn bitch 😘
The band is from Finland, but asked the Dutch singer Floor Jansen to join. Genius move! They are so made for each other!
Floor is amazing. Her powerful voice and charisma at the stage are world class. I think Nightwish is now better than ever before. Also Tuomas seems to get better and better at composing every year. Usually it's the other way.
He doesn’t have to adjust to the abilities or limitations of a voice, because Floor can do it all...he can more or less write what he wants, I think.
He reacted to Cry For The Moon, and we bothered him with Consign To Oblivion since then ;)
This song, in particular this live video, is more than just a performance, it is an experience. You feel every word that is sung by Floor. It is a masterpiece, indeed.
good point about her voice..

A personal favourite of mine is "No Bullets Fly"... its even better when you read about the pilots finding each other years later...

I have loved them since I was 10 years old.

one single song by Nightwish has the potential to be an entire album..
it's ridiculous how good this band is! #Floorgasm
I don't know why I'm sure about it, but that song is hers.)
Luckily it didn't hurt them as a band, and as far as I can say, and as musician myself and therefor someone who spents a lot of time with music, listening to music and analyzing music they have grown over the time.
-
tl;dr Part:
The most underappreciated thing about Nightwish is the songwriting.
Agree.
@@warhammer5690 I love Nightwish too!

Man, the first time I heard this song, especially the Mother & Father part, I bawled my freaking eyes out. I still get chocked up when I hear it. Not for any background meaning or anything else, just the pure beauty and emotion represented there, the love of a mother and a father for their child.

Please react to Nightwish - The Greatest Show On Earth (live in Tampere) it's absolutely mind-blowing, Alex!

- The blade will keep on descending - All you need is to feel my love - Search for beauty, find your shore - Try to save them all, bleed no more - You have such oceans within - In the end I will always love you_
