  • Another look at the launching of the lifeboat here at Scarborough. They had a litle trouble at releasing the boat on this one,i think it was due to the guy who was driving the tractor who did not take the boat far enough into the sea.
I know the skipper of the boat was not very pleased,as when the boat was launched away from the trailer he took the boat away at full throttle, which i thought sounded great.............Enjoy

This is why we train at anything to learn by our mistakes and better our performance. The tractor driver if it was his mistake will no doubt have learned something that day and everyone learnt some useful knowledge at the de briefing.
Good to see my childhood haunt, I remember the the maroon being fired out the front to call the crew.

After every launch we would hose the wheels with fresh water unti we had serious water restrictions and we could not continue with this practice then our problems started with seized wheel bearings, i think they have the same problem on one of their wheels

Ha Ha,i like your thoughts Paul,i wished that would happen, not here though, the breakneck speed i mean LOL.
They cannot do that here, the location of the lifeboat station,is right on the beach, and as you know the hight of the tides change every day, when it is a big tide they launch from the beach,on a slack tide it is done from the ramp.but sometimes they have to push that boat a hundered yards and more to get to the sea,no you are not a town-ee,that tractor is water tight,LOL..........John

It's standard on practice, to start the engines before launch. So that when the boat is launched it can go especially when there launching into rough seas. If they didn't the boat could end up getting into trouble them selves.

The tractor they use to get this boat into the sea, looks like it could well get swamped by water, should any big waves come along at the time of launching, or am I just being a Town-ee here..?

Useless should have consulted me I would want to launch within 30 seconds, you can take an hour to retrieve but only seconds to launch, I have years of experience in launch and retrieval of boats up to 38 foot , What is the sense of paying millions for a boat but is a failure to launch in this situation time =life and I can just imagine how frustrating it is for the crew , the crawler only just made it, if you must use a tractor unit then make sure the driver is seated facing the boat and if it is a wheeled vehicle used to launch always hook up at the front 10 times easier to steer

    • @CDB8939
      @CDB8939 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

May I suggest you do a bit of research before you comment. The Taulus Tractor always launches like this the driver has a swivel seat and faces the direction it is going in. The tide on this occaision is in, when it is out there is some distance to travel to get to the water. This is a training launch so the training is for everyone including the tractor driver.

      Derek Robbens+ Training mucker,
your comment is interesting, the boat is fairly old, and given the RNLI is funded by donation's takes time to replace them. So don't talk bollocks mucker.

As ex crew....launching the boat and recovery has to be practised.....as with man overboard and other situations.....R.N.L.I. do not allow members to enter the water...so we practise with fenders......however....launching is not a race.....its not against the clock....although in the event of a shout.....it is done much quicker.....its practised so all members at the station both shore helpers and crew can do each others jobs if the situation arises........there is no point risking wrecking the boat during launch....as a wrecked boat is no good to anyone.
As someone said....a launch tractor is usually on tracks....although i have seen some on wheels.......and are designed so can operate either back or front.....drivrr simply swivels the seat......all are waterproofed....and im yet to see one sink........but again they are not racing cars......they are designed to get the boat away as quick as possible.......from our pagers to in the water and underway was about 10mins.....sometimes quicker........

This vessel seems more suited (just by observation) for people in the water already WITH floatation (life jacket or ring) where seconds aren't as critical. Seems a rail delivery system (maybe with a cable retrieval system) of some sort might serve a better purpose, at least when seconds DO count. IMHO

They must be fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger for seawater cooling. I hope that the sea water pump connected to the engine was picking up water as the impeller would be destroyed if it runs for a long time without water, unless of course it is another type of pump , perhaps with a clutch!
If the tractor has a fork lifting gear in front, the trailer of the boat could be lifted up and the boat slid down in shallower water. Bring in the boat would even be easier with a trailer capable of being inclined.
A rectangular frame pivoted at the centre hinged on a a traingular A frame structure would do the job with the front of the A frame still attached to the tractor. The rectangular frame on which the boat sits will be inclined with a hydraulic jack.
