It's very nostalgic watching this video after all these years! :') Having my first comment accidentally removed, I would like to write down again the tips that helped me learn the language!
FOR STARTING AND BEING CONSISTENT TO MY LEARNING:
- Courses 2 times per week for 1,5 year at a school of foreign languages.
These lessons really helped me to make the first steps, understand the logic of the language, learn the grammar, words, expressions and having my thoughts more organised. At that time I thought it was not that enough and I could also make it by myself (by doing the things below), but for me personally I am realising that indeed this was important, as I had difficulty of starting something from zero by myself and keeping it consistent! Also, our teacher's weekly exercise of writing an essay about the different topics we did (adding more difficulty each time), was the best way for me to use what we've learnt in each unit.
For Greeks I was going to school "High Pass" at the center of Thessaloniki and my teacher was lovely Lana from Russia:)
FOR PRACTISING AND LEARNING FOR EVERYDAY THINGS:
- Watching TH-camrs I like (MAX almost EVERY DAY on repeat! / Sonya Esman, travel bloggers) and pausing the video to write down expressions or translate words that are more everyday used.
- Following Russian accounts on Instagram.
- Watching TED talks on TH-cam.
- Reading texts while in the bus at wikihow website.
FOR BEING MORE CONFIDENT:
- Talking with people in social media apps (like Instagram) or language exchange applications (like Tandem), also with voice messages.
FOR BEING MOTIVATED:
- As I said in the video, my personal motivation was the Polish guy I met, who learnt greek like native. He was literally reading, watching, talking all day and I was really really impressed and motivated!

Я русский и я жил в Греции 3,5 года. Я не плохо говорю по-гречески. Теперь я живу в США. И скажу, что изучать греческий язык для русского человека проще, чем изучать английский. Алгоритмы языка русского и греческого больше похожи, чем алгоритм английского. Мы с греками думаем одинаково и юмор у нас одинаковый. У нас очень много общего.

I was so amazed. It is so much inspirng video. I'm Korean and I am learning Russian for 4 years, but I can't speak the way she does.I speak with lots of gramatical mistakes, but she... perfect. Somone made a comment that he feels like a non-native speaker from her accent, but I understood without any prejudice.Amazing! Nice video made by Max and Joanna. I really appreciate you two guys of your kind effort to make such a nice video.
"I am learning Russian for 4 years" - you can't say that, grammatically it is the same as saying "I'm buying a house for $100,000". Of course you can see in the house example it is something you are doing at the present time, not something you did in the past. For this same reason, you can't "study" 4 years worth of Russian at this very moment, right now! It doesn't make sense that a long process in the past can somehow happen RIGHT NOW.

This is very encouraging, especially she's never been to Russia like me and has not been exposed to Russian language. Because of her, I know one day I can also speak like her and be fluent. It's just a matter of time.

Привет, Victorianne! You're absolutely right! It's just a matter of time. Russian language got a lot from Greek and they are a bit more similar than let's say Russian and English or Spanish. I'm going on my own with Chinese and even though I've lived in China for a year I still could speak. Now I'm trying another way to learn let's see what it'll bring.
Btw you're right about the fillers too, they give you a chance to take a break or a pause while conversation. Maybe I should shoot a video about them...

In fact it was completely unexpected, otherwise I would have taken lessons)...До сих пор это хорошо, я поняла большую часть видео но сейчас я осознала я должна практиковать как говорить.

Hey, Kris! Good to see you:) Everything depends on your final goal. If you want to speak fluently you need to speak more. If you want to read you gotta read etc. Some learners just want to enjoy the language and not to be in rush. Everyone has her or his own way and needs for learning. I just really want to get acquainted with her teacher xD
Everything will be fine, just find your own personal way to learn and at the same time to enjoy it!
For example I like watching videos with russian subtitles, translate them and note the unknown words and some good expressions!

It depends on the amount of time you spend. Try the 'magic pill' of 2 hours per day, and you'll get a very high level in 1,5 years. ;)
as a native Russin speaker I would say that the attempt wasn't bad at all. Had a bit of a hard time understanding some certain points due to the pronunciation and some grammatical errors, but overall very nicely done:))

I met a Russian man who told me that it took him only 6 months to learn how to speak Greek once he moved there. Russians and Greeks share pretty much the same alphabet, so I can see how it can be easier to pick up both languages if you are from one of those countries.
The alphabet has some common letters, but is not the same. If you only know latin alphabet, you can not read greek words, but with cirillic alphabet you can kinda guess what it sounds like in greek. We have some loanwords from greek in slavic/russian languages. For example I know what that word means just by looking at it: αεροδρόμιο
That alphabets are not really that similar at all :P
just knowing the alphabet is just about 0,01% of all the total work input
It’s not because of the two alphabets’ similarities, it’s because Ancient Greek has influenced the development of Russian even more than it has influenced the development of English
david Sure, because Finnish isn’t even an indo-european language. But we were comparing Greek with Russian (which partially shares a Cyrillic alphabet) and English . Yesterday I was looking up basic vocab in Greek and I noticed that lots of words are cognate to what would be considered recondite words in English , for example ‘ergo’ which I’ve already forgotten the exact = but know it’s roughly ‘to move’
Joanna has a huge talent for languages, I must say I'm a bit envious of her. I wanted to add that she's really beautiful, but that might sound out of place and that's why I won't.

Don't envy her talent. That's diminishing the amount of (hard) work she has put into her abilities. Talent plays only a small factor. In the end, hard work and consistency are what bring you the long term results. Don't envy her, take her as an inspiration to also put in the work.

Грекам проще выучить русский язык, чем западным народам--потому что кириллический алфавит похож на греческий (был создан на базе греческого), потому что у греков артикуляция звуков сходна с русской артикуляцией звуков, потому что в греческом языке также есть падежи и различные типы склонений, потому что в греческом языке, как и в русском, существуют множество правил с множеством исключений. :)
Греческий язык, особенно древнегреческий язык--тоже очень сложный язык.
Great vid! Remember, goals in language learning are nearly useless, and will set u up for dissappointment. You cant 'force' your brain to absorb a language. It does it when its ready, and theres nothing u can do to make it work faster. Patience.

One thing Ive noticed over my learning journey, is that language learners are infamous for lying about how long theyve been learning a language. Ive been guilty mmyself, in certain situations. Caught many (some famous) youtubers by stumbling across old videos that completely busted them.

If she is at 1.5 yrs, I say she is doing very well. I allso read that Russian is much easier for Greeks than others.

It's really hard to say sometimes when you started, because you might start learning an alphabet 1 year ago but actually got involved in the process just a few months ago, thus it's unclear where is the departure point. And I agree that you cannot force yourself, however you can find your own way which is suitable and effective for you.

I'm studying now both Russian and Greek. I started with Russian first I'm studying Italian German french and Spanish also. But in some way to me when it comes to studying Greek it kind of strikes me like studying russian. Russian right now out of the languages I'm studying is easier for me to study. Italian and french however are my most difficult to study don't ask me why. German has its moments of being difficult Spanish not so much. But Italian especially Italian is more difficult or should I say trickier about studying than the other languages I'm studying including Greek. Greek isn't that difficult. Lol. All the languages I'm learning are all in their own ways unique and gorgeous. ❤️

I've lived in many countries and speak different languages (and I teach too), and I always came across so many people who claim this thing of "Oh, I learned this language in few months, etc etc", but you detect straight away when they lie because these people tend to tell the same type of lies. For instance, this thing of "I learned German, but then I forgot it" is very very typical of people who lie (When you learn a language, you can forget some words and ways, but not the language... if you say so, that means you just learned a very little basic bit and then forgot). So, when I hear this lie, then I know the person will tell many other lies, like "I learnt Russian in a year and a half". There are so many clues to detect this last lie. The very first one is the fluency in the pronunciation of medium-long sentences. Not even very intellectually gifted persons and polyglots can pronounce that fluent within two years, even though they learn the whole grammar and much vocabulary. It's only after three years that human brain can process sounds and lexicon that fluently (in all humans). Then, even for gifted persons, it is required a minimum of six months or a year to learn the very basis of Russian from which to actually start to learn. But the very main clue to know someone is lying is knowing how many languages that person actually speaks (and I say actually, not just "a little bit"). Only people who fully learned several languages have the skills to learn another one very quickly (and not even with the quickness she claims). Due to my profession I've worked with several polyglots, and they (we) are always tired of people who claim to speak several languages whereas they only know some few notions of different languages. She should be honest and confess that she studied Russian for long, and that perhaps afterwards she improved it and could shaped that knowledge properly in one year and a half. I spent this much time writing this comment because these kind of "I learnt whatever in a year" claims are very very damaging.
Perhaps she’s right, it’s easier for a greek person to learn russian. And she probably spoke with a lot of natives, which frankly is the way to go. I started doing that a month ago and probably improved more than in a year of learning russian. I can read and understand books but still make a lot of grammatical mistakes, which tend to limit my ability to speak or even think in russian. These last few days however, because pf the numerous conversations with native speakers, I can definitely feel way more improvement, and I’m finally not afraid to articulate sentences orally. That being said, if she already had notions, and started speaking with natives, on top of reading books, watching movies/videos etc. I’m not surprised she got to this level.

Not sure if being a Greek native speaker gives this girl an advantage, coincidentally I saw a video of a Greek man who was showing his Russian speaking skills and he was sharing tips on how to improve your skills, his Russian level was great.... anyway all in all this is amazing and a real motivation for all of us Russian language learners!

Where’s the Canon gone
I am just wondering how she learned to pronounce words correctly without talking regulary with native russian speakers (people who listen and correct you ). I speak french, german and italien in level C1+.. but for this i had to go to France or Italy several times. Maybe she just has a big talent! I am now learning russian since 6 months and i agree with her that nowadays, we can study very well by looking youtube videos, listening to podcasts and so on. Ok as to age, i could be her father: with 45 you dont learn that easy anymore .. :-(

Don't forget that pronunciation is highly depending on your mother tongue. She is Greek and I believe there are lots of similar sound in our languages.

I learned Greek fluently, living ih Greece, in 4 years. I have been self-studying Russian now for 18 months and can definately say Russian is way more difficult, especially the "cases".
i can imagine being greek gives one a "slight" advantage..

This girl really does sounds great! However it does seem like she has notes with pre-made answers. This makes the video seem a little misleading, as it’s hard to judge how much is rehearsed vs. “Natural”. I don’t doubt that she knows Russian well, but it’s much easier to spend time and write your answers for a script instead of “naturally” getting all of the cases correct in speech. Anyway, it still seems impressive!!

@@ItsameAlex Hello! I had a pretty huge comment with details, but I can't find it. Maybe it was reported (?), because I mentioned the language school I took classes? Who knows!
So basically what helped me was :
- Videos of Max! Most important for me.
- Reading at ru.wikihow.com and taking notes
- Watching Russian youtubers with automatic subtitles (my favourite Sonya Esman)
- Found Russian people on Instagram and talking with them often
- Writing small essays in the language school using expressions that we have been tought
PS: I don't practice russian at all right now:(. I am learning polish, and I use the same steps, only wikihow is not available unfortunately.

It helps that half the alphabet is the same. Greek is such a happy language that reflects strong family ties with lower rates of abuse, low academic pressure and rates of depression/suicide. I can't relate... if I married a greek girl, her side would be supportive and affectionate, and mine would be a dysfunctional train wreck. lol.
