You somehow get the feeling she's both super happy to do this - to be a little playful again for like 5 minutes - but also extremely embarrassed about it. Kinda like a "Yes, I get to do this! Damn, friends are watching tho...."
If you're curious, Y'shtola's Japanese voice is named Ai Kayano, she's been voice acting since about 2011 and is one of the most prolific seiyuu active right now. There hasn't been a season since her debut where she hasn't voiced in at least one anime. Some of her notable works include Lalatina "Darkness" Dustiness Ford in Konosuba, Mia Karnstein in Code Vein and Mamako Oosuki in Milf-Isekai
yess, and don't forget menma from anohana and inori from guilty crown! man...how her voice can be so tiny and high-pitched in one and then low and powerful in the next is beyond me.
And Kirika Akatsuki from the Symphogear series, she sings a whole bunch of songs there, too. It is really impressive that she can voice both a stoic and wise character like Y'shtola as well as a goofy airhead with two working braincells.
So a bit of a rough translation (because the subtitles here are not meant for the JP dub, they have their own subtitles and the ones you read here are similar to but not 100% accurate): Estinien: 'So, what are you doing now?' Y'shtola: 'There's something I want to check.' Estinien: 'Check at this moment eh? A quick thought experiment right?' Y'shtola: 'That's right, so let me pose you a question, how would you go about testing the warding scale?' Estinien: 'Hey, why are you looking at me? You don't expect to be able to go through that gate do you?' Y'shtola: 'Nothing of the sort, we won't have to do that. For now, we can rely on the familiar.' Y'shtola: 'Honestly speaking though, I didn't want to have to use this troublesome familiar, but I guess we have no choice.' [really rough here] Estinien: 'For a great mage like Y'shtola to be so hesitant, just what kind of familiar is it?' [Y'shtola's chant is kind of spot on for the actual word part, we'll never let her live it down though.] Estinien: 'Did she perhaps, eat something bad?' Nidhana: 'Oh? I thought that was SUPER cute!' Nixie: 'Tururu Awawa! Let's play! Let's Plaaaay!' Y'shtola: 'This is fine... afterall we need a familiar that can slip into the gate and have its aetherial energies examined... this is... fine...' Y'shtola: 'It's just, why did I leave the chant for summoning as an after-thought? I should have been more thoughtful than to leave it to my childish mindset at the time.' [really rough here] Y'shtola: 'Whilst they're inside the gate, there's a chance of voidsent slipping through. You'll need to protect Nidhana, Estinien.' Estinien: 'Ah... yeah...' Y'shtola: 'You should do the same as well.' Y'shtola: 'Ara, are you willing to go in the Nixie's stead? I could transform you so you can enter the gate.' [The ENG Dub subtitle is actually fine as well] Y'shtola: 'Right, let's begin!' Y'shtola: 'Nixies! Go forth!' Nixies: 'Tururu Awawa! We'll be on our way!' Oh one thing you might have noticed from the Nixies, yes, this is the same Nixie creation from Matoya's Relict. In fact, if you bring Y'shtola along, she'll mention that she can put this chapter of her past to rest, which will prompt Alphinaud to do a double take at the fact he just discovered her admitting to making it. Guess the past comes back to haunt you multiple times.
the translation and trivia you provided are pretty neat- thank you! it just goes to say the devs and those in charge of the story are very detail-oriented and spare no effort in deepening lore
Pretty good translation! If I may, I'd like to provide (from my understanding) some minor corrections to several lines, my thoughts in brackets: Estinien: 'Check at this moment eh? A quick thought experiment right?' (actually the English line fits just fine. He actually says, "Check something, eh? In short, an experiment, right?") Y'shtola: 'Honestly speaking though, I didn't want to have to use this troublesome familiar, but I guess we have no choice.' [really rough here] (Pretty close! "Though to be honest, I really didn't want to have to use this particular familiar...I guess we have no choice.") [After summoning the NIxies] Y'shtola: 'This is fine... after all we need a familiar that can slip into the gate and have its aetherial energies examined... this is... fine...' (Close again! "It's fine... in order to successfully pass through the gate, familiars with the least amount of aether needed to be used...I know that, but...") Y'shtola: 'It's just, why did I leave the chant for summoning as an after-thought? I should have been more thoughtful than to leave it to my childish mindset at the time.' [really rough here] (again, really close! "...Just why did I weave in that chant at the end of the summoning? I should like to question my younger self about this if we ever meet...") Y'shtola: 'Ara, are you willing to go in the Nixie's stead? I could transform you so you can enter the gate.' [The ENG Dub subtitle is actually fine as well] (I feel the translation doesn't lend itself enough gravitas to the situation. Y'shtola actually forces the WoL to backstep with a threat of "Ara, would you be fine if I forcibly *thrust* you into the gate instead of the Nixies?") Hope you find the above enlightening. Gotta love it though...Sass Y'shtola, and she'll threaten your physical and emotional wellbeing...I guess G'raha had it right... "Not the time for frivolities, my friend". FFXIVs version of FAFO.
The last bit, what Yshtola says in Japanese is actually quite a bit more threatening and blunt than the English. After the character chooses "Froth and Foam" Yshtola says "Oh? I could forcefully shove you through the gate instead of the Nixies you know?"
It's *very* interesting how different the presentation comes off with different voices. Y'shtola somehow sounds slightly more dignified in this (although I think that's because her voice doesn't sound ludicrously childish here xD). And Nidhana legit sounds like 40 years younger in this version.
