Before going out to Afghanistan he and the camera and sound people had to learn to use the SA80 rifle themselves - "In case you are the last man standing". They were automatic targets for the Taliban because of the strange, un-military kit that they hauled around on the battlefield. And I cherish the response of the squaddies they were with when first under fire for real; you heard lots of calls out to make sure Ross was okay as everyone took cover under fire. Especially since my country (the Netherlands) is still debating whether we should help the people who helped us... I'm in touch with one of the interpreters who worked for us, I'm horrified for him and his family. The Taliban know who he is, what he's done. And politicians are debating if we should bring them to the Netherlands. They were invaluable to us, and we're just letting them rot.

Thanks for the best wishes, truly appreciated! If you saw some of the footage he sent me, damn... It's bad, a lot worse than we see on our news. *FYI on Ross Kemp:*
He was formally a _"TV hardman"_ on the quintessential British soap, BBC's "Eastenders" - he was on it for a long time and was a tentpole character; tens of millions of us grew up with mum watching "Grant Mitchell" every night.
After leaving the show in 1999, he was in "Ultimate Force" where he played another hardman; an SAS type guy, leader of the team. It ws sort of an early 2000's British A-Team; but without the self awareness!
As a result of those characters, Ross started presenting documentaries about gangsters, famous hardmen, criminal gangs etc and he's been doing documentary stuff for close to 2 decades.
Characters aside, he's forged in *fire.*
He's been in the *shit* and met some seriously sketchy people in some seriously sketchy places - Frontlines all over the World, Taliban and ISIS leaders, Sinoloa and other Cartels, African rebels, E.Asian Pirates, E.European Sex Traffickers... the lot
He was an actor - but he's responsible got (or at least the face of) some truly legitimate journalism
The guy is 100% the real deal and a fucking *national treasure!* lol..
you'd be _very_ hard pressed to find a more well like bloke among the forces, let alone "celebrity"
Highly recommend his episode of "Extras" with Ricky Gervais; he solidly takes the piss out of himself for the entire show, every joke at his expense - legend
    However:
*The only Ross Kemp video you need to see* is
-------- "Ross Takes on Armed Men" ------
    - its less than 5min long and tells you everything you need to know

There is a Dutch "documentary" called 9:11 Zulu. This was the time one of our Commando (Green Berets) units got ambushed (360 degrees for a while) and the documentary maker, Vik Franken, had to pick up a weapon himself, that's how bad it got. Sadly, I cannot find it with English subtitles. There used to be a version of it online, but it seems to have vanished. It's an excellent documentary, with the soldiers telling how it is. Many are on drugs and have no training or discipline. They rejected us army training and many of them sold the equipment given by the us. There was a good vice documentary about it. @@6Tghma You are aware that the majority of the Protestant Irish which the orange apparently represents, see themselves as citizen's of the UK. That's why they serve in the UK army. Its not, to them, a foreign army. Indeed, many ROI Catholics are happy to serve in regiments like the Royal Irish.
If a UI happens, and I'm honest enough to say that it could happen ( thanks to Brexit) it doesn't necessarily mean that unionists will switch their allegiance to the Irish Army and Dublin. The young men and women, from the Shankill, Sandy row, Portadown etc, will still see the UK army as a place where they are welcome.

It was this series that changed my mind about Ross Kemp. I used to think he was nothing more than a character in a soap opera.
But he deserves credit for putting his life on the line to show us a little of what it is like for our troops. He may possibly have had a bodyguard, I don't know, but a bodyguard can't stop everything.

One of Ross Kemps acting rolls was as a sergeant in the SAS in a series called ultimate force.
So when he's doing the climatization training he's on the range and fires a few rounds, the range officer is reading off the scores at the end of the detail, the last and lowest score is 'Kemp, Ultimate Force my Arse!'

I think sadly they lose a guy and they find the Taliban who did it but they’re on a roof on their phone calling a cab and because of the rules of engagement they can’t take them out because they don’t have a weapon in their hand, they have to watch them get in the cab and drive off. They was so pissed off understandably and I remember seeing that and thinking our guys are fighting the enemy with their hands tied behind their backs.
