He said that DLR had taught him how to be a professional, touring musician by preparing, rehearsing, and taking care of his body through exercise in a way that he had never considered before. It was eye opening. This interview just confirms it.
You definitely should have a job but if you were my kid I would have gotit for you because playing a guitar is better than playing the tablet anything to get kids away from electronics and you never know maybe you become the next Eddie van halen.

I saw Van Halen in 2012 and 2015, this man may be in his sixties but he moved better than any so-called "frontmen" of today. Constant energy, roundhouse jump kicks, dancing all over the stage, and even did the splits multiple times. Pretty pathetic how so-called "humans" call him crazy, yet they don't realize their own emptiness. Roth is everything that's great about being a human being.

Absolutely true--understands energy, excitement, how to amplify his hyper celebration of the moment. My last concert for the original band was Diver Down, which was excellent. And then I saw the reunion: complicated and I don't have the ability to describe my response. But Van Halen rocks. Best album: VH2. Nobody agrees with this.

A seriously underrated vocalist and often overlooked lyricist. His lyrics are extremely clever and are full of double entendres. Love Dave, always will.
Properly rated rock star, but it's not in vain he played with about the best virtuosos rock music had to offer after leaving VH. (the band along with Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai and Greg Bissonette) He even had Jason Becker in his band, which at the time was one of the most admired guitar virtuosos. And still he managed to make it sound super fun. I put Dave right there with Ozzy. Super entertaining, very unique voices, groundbreaking and with stellar bands.
After being in a metal band for 3 years I can absolutely agree, it's like training for a fight, the training is usually much more difficult than the fight, in a musical sense rehearsal can last for hours just hammering out details, once you get to the show your just going through the motions in a way

I agree. I always thought Dave was a trip and genuinely funny. Many liked to accuse him of being an egotistical asshole with his stage antics and ramblings... I always interpreted it as his sense of humor. His way of incorporating this sort of "comedy" element to the Van Halen live experience. When you look at those guys, they're funny dudes. Every great band, its members are friggin characters. Guys who are hilarious even if they aren't trying to be. I think Dave picked up on that with Van Halen and fed off it. As a result, the Van Halen vibe snd energy was created. But I guarantee Dave would be one cool dude to hang with. In fact, I read a fan comment over Instagram where this guy talked about randomly running into Dave on the streets. Minutes later, he and Dave were in his car smoking a couple of joints together
Amen. The stories of Michael Jordan are legendary. His teammates say fans never saw the best of MJ. He practiced like a menace. Intense and manic. That way...the games would be easier as he already did all the hard work at practice. DLR is saying the same thing. He is exactly right.

He was always a cagey smart businessperson, I think many people saw through the ditzy stoner/surfer dude act early on. The problem is that he is always "on" one way or another, either with the stoner schtick or now with his neverending steam of conscious monologues. It's easy to see how he exhausted Eddie Van Halen, and how Sammy Hagar just couldn't jibe with him ever.
This has to be the best David Lee Roth interview that I've seen since I accessed TH-cam over three years ago. He truly described his musical and business approach with statistics, and he wasn't grossing us out.

I always thought he was cocky, but after watching this I appreciate his insight. He’s actually a really intelligent guy. I’m so intrigued by musicians, they are great storytellers, but also just have such a different view on things.
The van halen's father was a gigging musician before they were born. When they were old enough he took them with him to gigs. They were keenly aware of how the music business works. They grew-up poor. I believe Mr. Van Halen was just a foreign worker in the cafeteria at a hospital in pasadena. One thing i always admired about dave is he always shows respect to their parents he always calls them Mr. and Mrs. Van Halen. He was the one that out together "big bad bill" so Mr. Van Halen could be on one of their albums.
Big Band is the primary foundation for Rock & Roll, as I see it. I think this is often overlooked. Yes, Blues, Country, Jazz and other types of music were foundational as well, but Big Band was the R&R of the 30s and 40s, placed the drummer at the back and central, had guitar solos and other solos. It literally set the stage. So much of what Rock & Roll became was based on the Big Band scene. There is a smooth flow from Big Band to Rock & Roll that occured in the 50s. That's how I see it. What are your thoughts?
They complimented each other. DLR wanted to be a rock star, he found the ticket in the Van Halen’s, but it was Dave that provided the structure and the show. They were in a league of their own. A lot tried to copy, all failed

Oh yes... David Lee Roth tells it in such in an exciting way. Even I would have preferred the night of January 16th, 1938 in New York. First the Carnegie Hall to see Benny Goodman playing the first swing band concert in this 'holy' classical venue with Basie, Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams and Harry James. And afterward going over to the Savoy to see the battle of bands between Chick Webb and Count Basie.
this was my favourite story, also. I've heard every criticism of DLR, but he is a 'giver'.Telling stories, laughing, & entertaining all takes energy, which not every person is willing to or has the capability of offering.

It was generally acknowledged that his band blew Goodman's band out of the water, it was competitive but it wasn't adversarial. After Webb's band played, Gene Krupa ran out on stage, got on his knees and started bowing down to Webb. It was humorous and good-natured but it really was obvious that Webb and his band were the top of the heap.
Roth is one of those guys that loves life. He just finds joy in things that the rest of us may not. That , to me, is why he was such a great frontman. He just brings that level of joy on stage with him- He IS the party, as he's said before. Absolutely true.
I love the line in here where he said “I always sang like my life depended on it.” And he grew up like that. He learned to do everything like his life depended on it. I would have mw r guessed back when he was jumping and screaming as an ultra rock star that he had such depth and a powerful story. And that his inspiration for performing became the first and second chair clarinet players in the L.A. Philharmonic.
Nobody in music will ever have the enthusiasm, or discipline of Dave. Brother is wired differently, he doesn't think the same as the rest of us. He's riding a wave we will never attempt.

Paul Poche. I case anyone is too lazy to look it up.... It was too make sure that promoters and everyone involved in the show at the venue actually read the rider. Because the rider involved more than what’s on the caterer’s cart. It also involved all the electrical requirements required by the sound and lighting tour companies. If they would overlook the rider, there could be a possibly of injury or death if something is not checked properly.
@@edwardmonsariste4050 and youre not kidding about the electrical dangers that made them need specific requierements to have a smooth show. eddie's amps alone were sometimes on the brink of blowing up because of the wattage he would rig up to power them, sometimes using a variac to be able to max out the power going to the tubes of his amps in order to get that searing explosive guitar tone that he was so famously known for.
@@musek5048 - The variac wasn't used to max out the power, it was used to drop the voltage to change the tone. It actually takes the searing tone down, warming it up and relaxing it a bit. Rick Beato did a video recently where they experiment with a variac and show the effect it has... it's really fascinating to see how it rolls off the attack of the notes and eases into Eddie's brown sound.
@@AllThroughALife yes you are correct you have to lower it, i think i miscommunicated what i meant to say, when i said "max out the power" i meant turn up most of the main amp dials all the way to 11. a long time ago i bought a variac and tried it on my peavey ultra 60 tube amp to see if i could achieve the same effect. it worked (kinda) by lowering the big dial on the variac. it obviously didnt have that melting cranked marshall tone but i did notice the sound get a little more "spongy" or compressed with a little added warmth. sounded great already and with the variac it sounded better but since i hadnt rebiased the tubes and made extra adjustments i ditched the variac since it wasnt a HUGE difference i noticed and i didnt want to stress the amp out for too long. you'd probably notice it more on a plexi i'd imagine
The Mighty Van Halen were the greatest rock band in history because of their tireless work ethic combined with a deep appreciation of classical music and jazz among others...How else can you explain cutting some of their earlier albums in record short time under such pressure from record labels. I will always say this: Zeppelin ruled the 70s but VH ruled the 80s AND 90s and still sold out arenas up to the day Eddie passed.
I knew the limo driver who drove for David Lee Roth the night he played a concert in my home town back in the 1980s. The driver said he picked him up after the concert and Roth was completely out of hand, crazy drunk, and he tried to drag a girl through the sunroof of the limo which damaged the car. The discipline which comes from classical training in music is really important, even if you're playing rock, metal etc. One of the biggest reasons is having solid meter / tempo. This was the first thing my classical guitar teacher hammered into me 35 yrs ago. It's an absolute nightmare when you have to play with musicians who are all over the place in speeding up and slowing songs down - ESPECIALLY drummers.
Inside scoop and it may have been discussed, is that Dave left because Eddie was always getting wasted before concerts. I can attest, Van Hagar came to my town and Eddie couldn't even stand. He played most of the gig sitting down or even laying down and it was awful. We left half way through.

A seriously underrated vocalist and often overlooked lyricist. His lyrics are extremely clever and are full of double entendres. Love Dave, always will.
Properly rated rock star, but it's not in vain he played with about the best virtuosos rock music had to offer after leaving VH. (the band along with Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai and Greg Bissonette) He even had Jason Becker in his band, which at the time was one of the most admired guitar virtuosos. And still he managed to make it sound super fun.
I put Dave right there with Ozzy. Super entertaining, very unique voices, groundbreaking and with stellar bands.

After being in a metal band for 3 years I can absolutely agree, it's like training for a fight, the training is usually much more difficult than the fight, in a musical sense rehearsal can last for hours just hammering out details, once you get to the show your just going through the motions in a way

I agree. I always thought Dave was a trip and genuinely funny. Many liked to accuse him of being an egotistical asshole with his stage antics and ramblings... I always interpreted it as his sense of humor. His way of incorporating this sort of "comedy" element to the Van Halen live experience.
When you look at those guys, they're funny dudes. Every great band, its members are friggin characters. Guys who are hilarious even if they aren't trying to be. I think Dave picked up on that with Van Halen and fed off it. As a result, the Van Halen vibe snd energy was created.
But I guarantee Dave would be one cool dude to hang with. In fact, I read a fan comment over Instagram where this guy talked about randomly running into Dave on the streets. Minutes later, he and Dave were in his car smoking a couple of joints together

Amen. The stories of Michael Jordan are legendary. His teammates say fans never saw the best of MJ. He practiced like a menace. Intense and manic. That way...the games would be easier as he already did all the hard work at practice. DLR is saying the same thing. He is exactly right.

He was always a cagey smart businessperson, I think many people saw through the ditzy stoner/surfer dude act early on. The problem is that he is always "on" one way or another, either with the stoner schtick or now with his neverending steam of conscious monologues. It's easy to see how he exhausted Eddie Van Halen, and how Sammy Hagar just couldn't jibe with him ever.
DLR is like an evil genius that happens to also be the nicest dude ever.

This has to be the best David Lee Roth interview that I've seen since I accessed TH-cam over three years ago. He truly described his musical and business approach with statistics, and he wasn't grossing us out.
I can tell that he had a great time in his youth.

The van halen's father was a gigging musician before they were born. When they were old enough he took them with him to gigs. They were keenly aware of how the music business works. They grew-up poor. I believe Mr. Van Halen was just a foreign worker in the cafeteria at a hospital in pasadena. One thing i always admired about dave is he always shows respect to their parents he always calls them Mr. and Mrs. Van Halen. He was the one that out together "big bad bill" so Mr. Van Halen could be on one of their albums.

Big Band is the primary foundation for Rock & Roll, as I see it. I think this is often overlooked. Yes, Blues, Country, Jazz and other types of music were foundational as well, but Big Band was the R&R of the 30s and 40s, placed the drummer at the back and central, had guitar solos and other solos. It literally set the stage. So much of what Rock & Roll became was based on the Big Band scene. There is a smooth flow from Big Band to Rock & Roll that occured in the 50s. That's how I see it. What are your thoughts?

I'm a guitar player and I liked VH cause of Roth that's who I watched. Randy Rhoads was my guy for guitar!
They complimented each other. DLR wanted to be a rock star, he found the ticket in the Van Halen’s, but it was Dave that provided the structure and the show. They were in a league of their own. A lot tried to copy, all failed

Oh yes... David Lee Roth tells it in such in an exciting way. Even I would have preferred the night of January 16th, 1938 in New York. First the Carnegie Hall to see Benny Goodman playing the first swing band concert in this 'holy' classical venue with Basie, Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams and Harry James. And afterward going over to the Savoy to see the battle of bands between Chick Webb and Count Basie.
this was my favourite story, also. I've heard every criticism of DLR, but he is a 'giver'.Telling stories, laughing, & entertaining all takes energy, which not every person is willing to or has the capability of offering.

It was generally acknowledged that his band blew Goodman's band out of the water, it was competitive but it wasn't adversarial. After Webb's band played, Gene Krupa ran out on stage, got on his knees and started bowing down to Webb. It was humorous and good-natured but it really was obvious that Webb and his band were the top of the heap.

Roth is one of those guys that loves life. He just finds joy in things that the rest of us may not. That , to me, is why he was such a great frontman. He just brings that level of joy on stage with him- He IS the party, as he's said before. Absolutely true.
I love the line in here where he said “I always sang like my life depended on it.” And he grew up like that. He learned to do everything like his life depended on it. I would have mw r guessed back when he was jumping and screaming as an ultra rock star that he had such depth and a powerful story. And that his inspiration for performing became the first and second chair clarinet players in the L.A. Philharmonic.

It was too make sure that promoters and everyone involved in the show at the venue actually read the rider. Because the rider involved more than what’s on the caterer’s cart. It also involved all the electrical requirements required by the sound and lighting tour companies. If they would overlook the rider, there could be a possibly of injury or death if something is not checked properly.
@@edwardmonsariste4050 and youre not kidding about the electrical dangers that made them need specific requierements to have a smooth show. eddie's amps alone were sometimes on the brink of blowing up because of the wattage he would rig up to power them, sometimes using a variac to be able to max out the power going to the tubes of his amps in order to get that searing explosive guitar tone that he was so famously known for.
And Eddie used the variac to turn it down, not up. Lots of people blew up a lot of Marshalls thanks to him tho :-(
@@musek5048 - The variac wasn't used to max out the power, it was used to drop the voltage to change the tone. It actually takes the searing tone down, warming it up and relaxing it a bit. Rick Beato did a video recently where they experiment with a variac and show the effect it has... it's really fascinating to see how it rolls off the attack of the notes and eases into Eddie's brown sound.
@@AllThroughALife yes you are correct you have to lower it, i think i miscommunicated what i meant to say, when i said "max out the power" i meant turn up most of the main amp dials all the way to 11. a long time ago i bought a variac and tried it on my peavey ultra 60 tube amp to see if i could achieve the same effect. it worked (kinda) by lowering the big dial on the variac. it obviously didnt have that melting cranked marshall tone but i did notice the sound get a little more "spongy" or compressed with a little added warmth. sounded great already and with the variac it sounded better but since i hadnt rebiased the tubes and made extra adjustments i ditched the variac since it wasnt a HUGE difference i noticed and i didnt want to stress the amp out for too long. you'd probably notice it more on a plexi i'd imagine
I just became aware of how real that whole stage persona of his really was- it was just him being Dave.
The Mighty Van Halen were the greatest rock band in history because of their tireless work ethic combined with a deep appreciation of classical music and jazz among others...How else can you explain cutting some of their earlier albums in record short time under such pressure from record labels. I will always say this: Zeppelin ruled the 70s but VH ruled the 80s AND 90s and still sold out arenas up to the day Eddie passed.

Diamond Dave, to just sit down and listen to Dave talk about MUSIC all night long would be amazing. I kind of get the feeling that if only one person attended Dimond Dave would still give an amazing performance!
The discipline which comes from classical training in music is really important, even if you're playing rock, metal etc. One of the biggest reasons is having solid meter / tempo. This was the first thing my classical guitar teacher hammered into me 35 yrs ago. It's an absolute nightmare when you have to play with musicians who are all over the place in speeding up and slowing songs down - ESPECIALLY drummers.
Inside scoop and it may have been discussed, is that Dave left because Eddie was always getting wasted before concerts. I can attest, Van Hagar came to my town and Eddie couldn't even stand. He played most of the gig sitting down or even laying down and it was awful. We left half way through.
When it comes to Van Halen, No offense to Sammy Hagar but Roth will always be King!!! One of the greatest frontmen ever!!!!!
