I'm brazilian girl and even though I can understand english language pretty well, your video are easier than any other to learn how to crochet a bag. In fact, I could understand everything even if you didn't say anything. You already have a fan from Brazil! Than you!
Mika Mendes thank you Mika! I try my best. I think my years of teaching English as a foreign language in Italy helps me slow things down and try to speak clearly :) I’m glad you liked the tutorial and hope you made a beautiful bag!
thank you so much Twyla! I have many private TH-cam videos that are just for my purchased patterns on my website. You are welcome to take a look at my pattern shop and learn as you go with the videos - link is in the description above. Happy crocheting!
Hello, I'm from Georgia I just watched a video I'm so glad that you explained and broke it down about crocheting a bag your voice was very clear thank you.
Thank you!!! I’ve been searching TH-cam for an easy to follow tutorial on how to make this Tshirt bag!!! The others are pretty but most are not in English! This turned out beautiful!!! I’m making mine following along!!!
Hi! The materials and all details are in the written pattern. This video is just an extra resource. You can grab the pattern in the description section. Happy hooking!
When you attach handles, people normally count stitches from the two exact centers folded points, after deciding where you want to put the first handle. The first handle also needs to be adjusted so it’s exactly even based on the number of stitches you have at the top part of the purse. We don’t normally make woven purse with T-shirt yarn but we have specially designed yarns of several kinds designed for making purse that we can even steam to even out stitches. It looks like people in the West don’t seem to have access or manufactures don’t make basket or purse yarns in the West..
I definitely did place the straps as center as possible on both sides, but the count depends on the count of the base of the purse. What country are you from? What are the names of the brands you use for making purses and baskets? I do wish we had more options for purse making. I live in Italy and here we have t-shirt yarn and natural fibers like jute and chunky cotton, but they are all heavy and not very sturdy. Tshirt yarn with low stretch is the most sturdy I've found here.
Thanks CA, well what happened is I have another video of this bag that is the short clip version (it was released before this video) so it got a ton of attention, everyone was wondering why it was just a clip, so then I posted the full video tutorial here :)
If you don’t have an awl use a philipshead screwdriver or a metal chopstick to widen the holes! Love this bag btw! Plastic canvas adds rigidity without weight
I am on my second bag using your pattern. However, I changed up the bottom a little to make it a bit sturdier. After the bottom rectangle is completed, instead of weaving in the cut end, I left the tail very long and weaved in and out of each stitch from one side to the other u til there were no longer any holes on the bottom and it was much firmer. I love it! Thanks for the wonderful pattern!
@@CraftwithJess Maybe I can send a pic to you somehow? It definitely helped keep the base a little more stable without needing something hard at the bottom. Anyhow, your patterns are great. I love them! ❤️
Your awesome great teaching technique I love to crochet and I want to try tshirt yarn so I'm deciding the color yarn I want, then I'll order it on line. Thanks
Loved this bag but I do like a sturdy flat solid bottom so I always use a piece of plastic canvas. If you like, you can cover it with a piece of material & hot glue the flaps down. Then face glued down inside ur bag & it doesn't make it really any heavier & easier to find stuff. 👜👛🛍👝
Im gonna try this pattern in a few days from now. Just waiting for the tshirt yarn and hook to arrive.. materials are not easy to buy esp here in the Philippines so I'm so excited to try this... Thank u so much for this tutorial I really love it. Wish me luck 😁
Definitely going to make this. One thing I’m not sure of, you mention “tie in your ends”, obviously I’m familiar with weaving ends but never having worked with teeshirt yarn I don’t know how to tie them in.
I meant to weave them, sorry for that confusion! I use a big plastic yarn needle or metal one and I weave the ends into the inside of the purse and back and Forth...etc. Happy crocheting!
So I've tried making it, but my yarn gets thicker and thinner at places so I'm not so happy with the results, but overall it's a great video and easy to follow, I'll definitely try it again with better yarn
hi Adrian, ya sometimes that happens with t-shirt yarn. The only way to be sure that doesn't happen is if you make your own and measure it while you make it, cutting the strips the same width. Otherwise if you find just 1 or 2 areas where the yarn is thin just stop and cut it out then pick up your yarn again where it's thick and keep crocheting.
hello Claudia! For this bag I used about 2 bobbins of tshirt yarn from Hoooked, all the details are in the written pattern which you can buy from my crochet shop - the pattern is also written in Spanish! The link is above in the description :)
Lovely but I really wanted to know how u weave in the ends of this bulky yarn ? Plus why not to count the stitches and use math to place the handles and fix them with a dap of hot glue till u r done with the stitching. I'd rather use a thick cotton yarn in contrasting color or a twine matching the handles color to sew them in place 😉
I just use a plastic tapestry needle, flatten out the t-shirt yarn by unraveling it and sew it through. For this bag I think that the stitch count wasn't an even number when I made this so I couldn't just count the top and pick the middle. Good idea about using a contrasting color yarn!
Great tutorial and beautiful bag! It's lovely as is but for someone who would like it reinforced maybe just make a liner in fabric? Or put a plastic mesh at the bottom. Just a couple of ideas
Do you have your camera connected to a Monitor? It would help you to see if you are out of frame when you are showing a step. Just a suggestion. I am an avid knitter but thought I would try this but missed a lot of important steps because they were out of frame. 🤷♀️
Sorry Brenda! No, but that is a great idea and I'll try to do that next time. This video is just an extra resource for the written pattern which might be helpful to follow. You can get the link for the pattern in the description.
Hi Paula! Thanks. The exact handles I got on Etsy, if you get the written pattern I included a link to the handles. The written pattern is in the description.
You could use any stitch really as long as the count is the same. The knit stitch is extra tight, if you do a regular sc stitch keep that in mind it may be looser, might want to go down a hook size :)
Hi Sylvia! The written pattern is available - link in the description. It has everything you need to get in the pattern. You can make this bag with 1-2 big skeins of t-shirt yarn. Happy hooking!
I have a video for the lining on my channel, to add a zipper would be a whole different concept and wouldn't work with this specific pattern unfortunately
I would say keep increasing the base a few rounds and see how you like the size of the base. Based on that start making the sides. It depends how much bigger you would like the bag.
Hi Debby! Yes, the t-shirt yarn I used was medium stretchy. I prefer the non-stretchy or medium stretchy kind personally because it kind of turns out more stiff. Happy hooking!
@CraftwithJess ahhhh! Maybe I'm just not used to it cause I'm sitting with an unfinished project since I find it a bit difficult to use. But your work is absolutely stunning, thanks.😘
I like your video but i have a small problem. After the 3'rd row you jumped ahead to row 5 said you're done and now its time to crochet the edges, but i have no ides how to get from row 3 to 5. Care to explain?
Hi Adiel, so for the base from rows 2-5 you're just crocheting sc across, 17 sts for each row. After that you crochet around the whole base. Hope this helps! You're welcome to purchase the written pattern here www.etsy.com/listing/860813840/crochet-handbag-pattern-white-crochet?ref=shop_home_active_18&crt=1
Hi Kim! That is definitely a factor yes. I used a 10mm hook. Did you follow the gauge from the pattern? If your gauge is off from the beginning your purse will not be the same size. Based on your gauge you need to adjust your hook size. Hope this helps!
Oh boy! Well the thickness of t-shirt yarn is used with a size 10 or 12mm hook...that might answer your question. Cord may be very very heavy though, maybe another fibrous type of "yarn" that is lighter is a good idea.
This is such a good way to explain everything ..amazing!!! But i dont know where to but it from ..or is it made at home ..what should i call it if i want to buy it???
Hi! Well this is the video that goes with the crochet pattern, the link is in the description box of the video :) I unfortunately do not make the physical bag to sell anymore. Hope this helps!
Hi, can you clarify the stitch count please after attaching the the base? When slip stitching around, you mention 47 stitches, but then the first row of sc attached to the base, you say 48. I’m confused. 10 minutes in 👍🏻 Thanks
Hi! I was trying to attach some photos of the written pattern here for you to see, but I can't. On the SL ST round of the base you do 47 + the invisible sl st join which is 48. After you work on the first round of the side of the purse. You need to have 48 sts as your first row of the purse sides because you need an even number.
@@CraftwithJess I got there in the end 😊 I’ll try and upload a picture of my finished bag. It’s very hard on the hands using T-shirt yarn but well worth it in the end, I love my crochet bag. Thanks!
I was curious about using t-shirt yarn but now after seeing this video and how bulky it is I'm a little nervous. Is it hard on your hands? Is it difficult to work with? This makes a very sharp looking bag! Beautiful.
If you've never worked with it before, yes. It is very different and if you crochet really tight it will be hard on your hands. This particular stitch is also very tight in order to make the bag more sturdy...so you have to go slow. T-shirt yarn can be easy to work with if there is some stretch in it, if not it can be harder. I'm used to it, but I have hurt myself once when I tried to do Tunisian crochet with t-shirt yarn and I used a hook that was too small...
No, I've never ever had mine stretch. It's all about how you make it and what kind of t-shirt yarn you use. If you use a stretchy t-shirt yarn then it will stretch, but mine is always no stretch. You can also crochet tighter to avoid stretching. I'd use a smaller hook or YO backwards to make your Sts tighter.
love your bag, its verry pretty and proffesionel. where did you buy the leather handels, i am from Belgium and i can not find it, thank you for the explenation,
hi Rosita! The handles you can get from etsy, the exact ones I used are written in the pattern. If you get the pattern I have all the links in there where you need to find these supplies.
you're welcome! You can, but it might be heavier. I've found that using ribbon xl yarn from Hoooked is lighter and easier than the rest. Using cord though is more stain resistant. Let me know what you end up using!
Go up a size hook if it is that tight, maybe your t-shirt yarn is super thick? 1 sc should be 1 inch, if it's bigger than that then you need a bigger hook.
Hi! You can use any number of stitches as long as it is an even number. Make sure that your hook size corresponds with your yarn thickness however because you don't want your purse to have too many holes or be too loose that it doesn't stand up.
Well, you can search to see if there are any companies near you that make t-shirt yarn, try Etsy, try Hoooked.co.uk (they ship internationally) or you can always make your own t-shirt yarn. After that, you can get the purse straps online easily.

Do you have a tutorial how to use liquid starch for a bag?
I do not, but you can buy the spray starch or dip it in liquid starch and dry
love your bag, its verry pretty and proffesionel. where did you buy the leather handels, i am from Belgium and i can not find it, thank you for the explenation,
hi Rosita! The handles you can get from etsy, the exact ones I used are written in the pattern. If you get the pattern I have all the links in there where you need to find these supplies.

Thank you. I love it
Can I use a macrame yarn
you're welcome! You can, but it might be heavier. I've found that using ribbon xl yarn from Hoooked is lighter and easier than the rest. Using cord though is more stain resistant. Let me know what you end up using!
I m trying to do this..but it is not easy..working with a size 10 hook..and the stiches r so tight..hand-offs to u for making this
Go up a size hook if it is that tight, maybe your t-shirt yarn is super thick? 1 sc should be 1 inch, if it's bigger than that then you need a bigger hook.
Hii! The t shirt yarn i am using isn’t as thick as yours so is it okay if i do 36 stitches for the base and continue?
Hi! You can use any number of stitches as long as it is an even number. Make sure that your hook size corresponds with your yarn thickness however because you don't want your purse to have too many holes or be too loose that it doesn't stand up.
I love making crochet bags..but I don't know from where I can buy the materials in Melbourne...May you help?
Well, you can search to see if there are any companies near you that make t-shirt yarn, try Etsy, try Hoooked.co.uk (they ship internationally) or you can always make your own t-shirt yarn. After that, you can get the purse straps online easily.
