I worked at AM General for 39 years, and live down the street from them. I test drove them (they had to have 10 miles driven on a hard surface), I also worked on the HUMMERs. They are still building HUMVEE's and are starting to build the other replacement vehicles also.
39 years? That was a long, dedicated career! My older brother bought a new, consumer version of the Humvee in the late 1990's. The first thing I noticed was how W I D E it was. Between its width and the Diesel humming along, you could almost wish for an intercom between the passenger and driver :)

I spent my last few years working at SPLO (Service Parts and Logistics) packing and shipping spare parts including those Armor kits during the Gulf war and Afghanistan.

One of the biggest problems with the Military and their vehicles is that they try to turn every new vehicle into a TANK. A humvee is larger than it's predecessor, uses more fuel, and has much less armor than a Bradley or even the M113 series. It is under armored and over used, thereby becoming one of the favorite targets for enemy forces. It is a versatile work horse, but it is not a tank, and should never have been turned an armored assault vehicle.
Well. I went to war in a soft skin. Then rhe IED became huge and we got armored ones. So... good move as they saved alot of lives while waiting on MRAPS
@@JoshStrickland-n8x Smart move, but it took too long to implement. I was in a Mech Inf. unit when the jeeps were phased out. Shortly after we got the Humvees, the Army put TOW on them and tried to run them in the same Combat roles as the M113, and moved the M113 up into the Battle formations alongside the M60s. Then we got M1A to replace the M60, and three years later we were upgraded to Bradley IFV. Shortly after that they swapped out the Bradley and gave us Strykers, so we could mount 105 mm guns. While I was in Vietnam, they regularly put .50 cal M2 on the jeeps. Sometimes they even tried running with a 106 recoilless on the jeeps. Again, up-gunned way beyond their design capabilities. Happy you made it back home.
@@John.S.Patton Yes, but we had problems with the machine gun floor mounts breaking out due to high speed driving over rough terrain, and they had a tendency to tip over when fired long bursts while sitting sideways on a hillside or embankment. Operator error, but still a problem. Also, the suspension had a tendency to fold under when traversing laterally across a hillside. But if you knew these things might happen and you didn't drive like Rat Patrol, you were probably going to be OK. Damn I miss that Jeep. It was fun in a non combat situation.
The trouble with the Humvee is it was not replaced sooner. The government set out specs for what became the Jeep. That was replaced by the M38 in 1949 but there was a call to replace it already in 1951 although it took quite a while for the new replacement to become standard. Still it stayed in service much longer but the replacement wasn't needed. At the end of the Cold War they did the same as did at the end of the Vietnam War with the Hummer. The sad thing was they needed a light weight scout car the same as when they wanted the original. The military has a tendency to take a item past it's original purpose then people complain when it doesn't work.
The real issue with it is they used it for a purpose it wasn't designed for. It's still fine for ferrying people around in low risk or non combat areas. The army doesn't need JLTVs stateside, unless it's specifically for training.

It just needed to be a bit better than a 1911, then it ends up in front line combat as a main weapon. I think officers liked it because other wise they had to carry a Garrand on a Thompson which was a lot more work.
The JLTV will be the go to vehicle and that’s a good thing over this Sabre. I’ve seen IED’s pick and flip a 6x MRAP. I can only imagine what it would do to such a small vehicle. There is a need for something smaller in ship to shore operations, but this doesn’t seem like a big upgrade on the hmmwv.

besides the fact Germany has build a fire on the move artillery.... in the war u see massiv Air drones... so u can ask.. is artillery state of the art or even future way to Use... because drones are cheaper and have greater Range. And is more cost effective... maybe it is obsolete.... better use this money on drones because they can hunt targets when it is on the move. also Tanks getting smaller because they can be remote controlled likethey are drones and very fast... mmost likly u want be able to hit this with a artillery. therefore only as a kind of bunker buster. or costal second linie of defence
Need an automated (laser or GPS set) 60mm morter system on it. Laz/GPS the target, computer sets round & morter, fire and go. Next. No more than the 60mm. Shoot, move & comms. Even while moving, the system can fire to area (memory) with slew-cap for crew. Crew can slew R/L/F/A...360° from last know, up to 200ft? Area saturation while you move.
Im a mechanic if u upgraded the suspension to bet springs and shock absorbers u could hold that weight better they had ahit suspension for what was needed originally also there are things u could do to the motor to give some more horsepower that the ground mechs could do that u have back at logistics base if u have a good one. Anyway I don't think the military needed to change this iconic beast. Just DOD wasting money like usual

The hummer is a better vehicle due to the position of the wheels . That positioning allows the hummer to have better carrying capacity and better ability to traverse rough ground. It can literally climb up the side of a mountain.m
The industrial military complex loves this war in Ukraine to where they can test new ideas against an old foe. Putting a cannon on the back of a humvee is an outstanding idea! I personally don't know why they haven't done this yet.

And now the JLTV that's supposed to replace the Humvee is even bigger. A Humvee is 15 feet long, 7 feet wide, 6 feet tall, and weighs up to 8,500 lbs. The JLTV is 20.5 feet long, 8.2 feet wide, 8.5 feet tall, and weighs 22,500 lbs.
To get a Jeep to military standards would eventually cost as much as a Hummer. Jeep Wrangler Mopar builds are actually pretty expensive Fiat made them affordable for common folks.

I'm not saying that there is no need for the hummer but there are very few places on most US installations that you couldn't get around in you average family car for about 1/6th the cost. Especially if they buy in bulk.

The detroit diesel engine wad crap if u kept the HUMVEE just put a Cummings or a duramax in it ur hummer would fly and carry anything and not break down as much they are good motors. The detroit diesel was pretty much the prototype for the Duramax i like cummins better persionally. Also it wasn't supercharged the 6.2 was naturally aspirated and the 6.5 was turbocharged and only had about 190 horses. Had alot of issues that motor also was a gas one made but they chose not to.go with that.

The US Army is copying the Polish Armed Forces :P Last year we acquired a vehicle (LPU Wirus / Żmija) from our domestic miltech producers that even tho its smaller looks very similar to this new HUMVEE and has the same purpose. A light forward recon vehicle that can go to places a properly sized all-terain vehicle simply cant. Currently those vehicles are patrolling the Polish-Belarusian border.

We replaced the humvee for combat operations in 2007 by MRAPs. We haven't used them in 16 years outside training

Only the factory Armored HMMWVs , like the M1114, got the turbocharged 6.5. All the A2 variants came with the normally aspirated 6.5

M998A0 never had a 6.2L turbo... it was just an N/A 6.2L with a 3 speed.
It did not have a turbo charged 6.2L it was a NA 6.2L it later was updated to the NA 6.5L.
They should look into Hybrid Engines....
