The PaB bar is Bright Green rather than Green, another point of confusion there, in that the regular Green that Lego's used for 50+ years is called "Dark Green" by them, and Green by Bricklink and other fan sites.
Even though I've been building off and on practically 45 years of my life with LEGO I'm always surprised by the nomenclature used by Bricklink versus LEGO. I remember hearing from a live stream with the one gentleman from brick model railroader and he said if he didn't have a part in the correct color, he was willing to paint it.😂
Yeah colors can get rather confusing when trying to go back and forth between bricklink and lego. The part descriptions can also be confusion. Like you, I have done it enough that I am pretty familiar with it now. But to new people it can seem overwhelming. As for painting parts, I know lots of people that do it 😆
You also be have to be careful when buying from lego - sometimes lego sells part for 10$ but on bricklink is for 1$. It just depends on what kind of part you want. But sometimes on bricklink you need to pay 10$ but on lego is only 7$. It just depends
Recently I created a python script to automatically convert a BrickLink partslist to Pick-A-Brick partslist (for all parts that are available at LEGO) and I am working on one that compares prices against BrickLink carts instead of just partslist
I agree, bricklink system is much easier to navigate. I am honestly surprised Lego has not implemented it on their page as well being they do own bricklink also now.
Very informative. I'm new to building MOCs and figured out the Bricklink vs Lego pick-a-brick after I'd made a few expensive mistakes, plus shipping adds up quickly when sourcing parts from multiple sellers.
I just figured this out the other day with nearly the exact same part. A 3L bar. I landed up just buying all of the parts from pick a brick instead because the total price for all of the parts was less on pick a brick than it was on bricklink.
Yeep .but all so $15 Doller delivery fee get s taken of once buy a big amount. But all so. Their s only a set amount can buy. So have to pay. In advance s. It's 28 days waiting. For the parts as Denmark to Australia is a long way. But if go on bricklink. May have to go thru 4 diffrent salers from diffrent cuntrys. So the shipping price added .can be a problem for some. .but with pic a brick. It's just one ..an can pic more parts. Once payed for your other order ..it's odd tho. How most the time. The delivery come in 2 diffrent .delivery .
Great tips! I gotta admit i love buying moc instructions on rebrickable, but shopping on bricklink for the parts is a nightmare. If you use the brinklink feature to find the lowest # of stores, you can end up massively overpaying for some parts. I've got probably a dozen mocs ive paid for the instructions but havent built because of the time needed to look for the best prices.
Thats probably the biggest issue with instructions and building. To make it even harder, and I do this also sometimes. Is designers use discontinued parts that make it even more difficult. Due to issues like these I am trying to redo some of my mocs with newer current part lists to make it easier for people.
Great tips there! I could use a whole batch of tips videos like these! I'm learning about the details of buying LEGO online, but there is still lots to learn. Thanks for sharing!
While yes it is a good idea to shop around I will point out that the 6l bar on Lego's website is in "Bright Green" which is also "bright green" on Bricklink and readily available at a comparable price. Lego does not sell the 6l bar in "dark green" which is simply "green" on Bricklink. The dark red panel is a PaB exclusive currently as far as Bricklink shows so yes they will be cheaper there.
Good catch I went back and checked and you are right, so that was a bad example and I also just ordered 60 of the wrong color part lmao 🤣 😆 oh well, live and learn. I do encounter this often though, usually on low demand parts, and new release parts.
Out of all the Lego U-Tubers out here, u r one of the realest. A lot of people build and review sets but as a moc creator myself, I prefer to listen and learn from people like urself cause u know more. Its kinda like the difference between a service plumber and a plumber who does it all from ground up. Sure, a service plumber knows a lot about individual products but the guys that rough in the pipes know more about the actual trade as they do it all(much like an electrician that just changes lights and switches vs one that actually pulls the wires). I wish more people that moc would make content and show all the problems they encountered and how they fixed or otherwise got around that particular problem. This is what i always thought Lego Masters should have been. Maybe I would have actually watched it passed season 1😂
Thank you I appreciate that and love the electrician reference being a 30 years electrician myself. Ive done everything from design, layout, installation and now service work. I agree with you on Lego masters, the show was a complete disappointment to me as well.
Excellent tips on purchasing parts. But also, the price is dictated by the color you're trying to get. If one part was only produced in one set, then yeah, the bricklink sellers jack up the price. I've noticed here lately whenever I've ordered large amount of parts from bricklink, I have recieved non lego parts or parts that are used even though I ordered new. Then you have to hassle with the seller or take the loss. At least with Lego PAB you know what you're getting.
Ive gotten burned a few times myself, but you can report them and the time it happened to me, the account was banned and I did recieve a refund. Bricklink is still valuable and you can find good deals also, just got to double check on the prices is all 😀
Lego's shipping is not the same around the world. Australians get reamed by the exchange rate, free shipping for orders over $149, standard shipping taking between 6-14 days and up to 40days for pick a brick orders to be fulfilled.
Same for Norway. And here the Lego shops is more costly than most of the norwegian Bricklink sellers. For example I need a few 2x2 corner bricks in blue for one of my Classic Town build. Bricklink 0.08 dollar, Lego store 23 cents!
This was only one example out of tens of thousands of parts on Bricklink. Bricklink has a much wider selection of parts compared to Lego Pick-A-Brick. Parts are not always cheaper on Lego Pick-A-Brick. If the part is not in production Bricklink is the choice. Pick-A-Brick usually take a few weeks to arrive. Most Bricklink sellers will ship the order within 24 hours of ordering. I would give the advice to compare each venue and pick the one best for you.
You obviously are not listening to what I am saying or you are a bricklink seller. Im trying to let people know to double check prices before they jump to make purchases and giving examples as to why.
@@BevinsBricksWorld I understand that that is one of the underlying point you want to make, however you make some errors in your communication/assumptions: "you see several options for part number. This one of the things I kind of hate about Bricklink" This is actually one of the points where Bricklink is superior over Lego PaB (Pick and Build now): Bricklink lists the base part number with alternative numbers and links to newer (letter suffix) similar parts if available. Lego has no link between them whatsoever. So 63965 was the bar MOULD number wen released in 2006, later they changed to 18274 and the current mould is 28921 and probably 93790 for transparent/shiny pieces (none available right now). Do you see why my remark would have been: "this is wat I hate about Lego PaB"? Lego is bothering customers with internal mould changes and numbers and even has different ones for opaque, transparent and pearl colors with a very crappy search engine to navigate between all the parts. The reason why studio also keeps the older moulds is because mould variations are not always functionally or aesthetically compatible. I found that some older parts have more clutch power as newer moulds. The new jumper can also be connected on the bottom on 1 stud in the center, the older cannot. There are ones with groove and without groove. All those older parts belong to older sets and are sold on Bricklink (luckily for us) and therefore need to be listed individually. Studio generally has the current production version on top though. Regarding your price differences: yes you have to pay attention but you are comparing green (never officially produced) with colors currently available. Therefore it has the yellow render of the first color available. Color naming is a whole different can of worm. In my opinion Lego should adopt bricklink names with a few exceptions but that will probably never happen because of internal documentation/processes. The vast majority of the community uses the bricklink names and Lego published their color names way later as Bricklink developed. My tip: make Bricklink wish lists, auto fill the max prices with "last 6 month average" and if it feels high or you need large quantities check the prices on Lego PaB and correct the max price with a note saying "0.07 on PaB" (wish lists is another superior point over Lego PaB) To finish an interesting fact: The bestseller parts are produced in the large automated factories and semi-local. Mexico for the US, China for Asia and Hungary for EU (although mine always ship from Poland, so probably stored there). The standard parts come as far as I know from the original/proto factory in Billund, Denmark and are packed by hand. (therefore it takes longer and sometimes the backlog is too high so they disable standard parts)
@@BevinsBricksWorld I don't agree with your assessment of Bricklink. That doesn't mean I didn't listen to you. It doesn't make me a Bricklink seller. You have made negative remarks about Bricklink in other videos and livestreams yet you have created several haul videos from Bricklink orders. You say I am a Bricklink seller like it is a bad thing. I appreciate the risk that Bricklink seller take by parting out sets. I have ordered off Bricklink well over 1,000 times. Most Bricklink sellers are honest and hard working. Vortexico4788 summed up the reasons why in general Bricklin is superior to Lego PAB and I will not repeat what he has already pointed out. You offered just a few examples of how Lego PAB is superior to Bricklink. There are several examples of when Bricklink is superior to Lego PAB. I stated this in my original comment, the most common time I have seen that Bricklink beats out Lego PAB is when I am looking for parts that are no longer in production. I have order several parts to replace missing or broken parts from retired sets. These parts are often not even available from Lego PAB. I think of Light Gray, Dark Gray, or Brown parts. Those are not available through LEGO PAB. Maybe a second hand brick and motor store may have these old colors, however, Bricklink will save you time.
Parts are not always cheaper on Lego Pick-A-Brick. If the part is not in production Bricklink is the choice. Pick-A-Brick usually take a few weeks to arrive. Most Bricklink sellers will ship the order within 24 hours of ordering.
In the usa, it only takes weeks for standard parts only, and I disagree with all the sellers on bricklink being fast. I have a select few I know ship fast and sort and all that well. But I also encounter many people who take up to a week to ship and just have all around horrible customer service. It's like anything, you got to check around when buying. 😉
That box car. Build dam 😊that dope it looks awesome would love to build few of them. Do you only sale the instruction s an parts list. Or its free to down load. Or. Don't have the instruction s. .
Currently making the instructions and I have the printed parts for sale on my website. The printed parts are each print on 3 1x2x5 bricks. They are for sale under my printed parts and train accessories page.
Thats great, for me if I am searching its only 1 or 2 specific patts in large quantities so I have never needed any tools like this. But can see moc builders using the daylights out of it.
@BevinsBricksWorld I kinda had the opposite problem: Buying small quantities of new/rare pieces. Buying massive quantities of one piece is usually cheaper on Bricklink, but the stores that offer them usually don't have all the other needed pieces available. Ordering from multiple different bricklink stores drives up the shipping cost, so it's cheaper to just order the remaining pieces on PaB, even if they are more expensive there. I wish PaB was integrated into Bricklink auto-buy.
Yeah I can see bricklink being an issue for people ordering small amounts of parts. I agree I dont know why Lego doesnt change all the color names also on bricklink also so they match on both sites to help buyers avoid confusion.
Good system. Does not work on all pieces. Would that be correct? I tried the red panda, minifigs arm dark tan, tan, and olive green and one or two other parts. There was no other part number except that of Bricklink or none of the several numbers workd even though the part was listed as being up to 2024. If that is so, is there another way to locate the part other than eBay? ric//
No it doesnt work on every piece and sometimes bricklink is still the best solution. Some parts, specifically licensed stuff, Lego does not sell on pick a brick.
Love it been a smart shopper 😊and the hunt for lowest price s is fun. 😊 Have you ever gone on ebay to buy parts .ive never checked on their for part s.
Years ago, I loved ebay and even facebook, but I stopped usong ebay years ago as the prices to me were way to high. Part of that is to blame on all the fees sellers have to cover now.
bricklink categorizes some things wrong. like those jumper plates. Some of them are modified tiles and others are modified plates. but bricklink categorizes them as modified tiles with or without groove. But really if it has a groove its a tile if it doesn't its a plate. if you replace the jumpers in a moc with tiles where it should be plates, you might end up with a slightly differnt look
That is true but a lot of times its also just a miss use on studio of the parts list. At least I know I have mistakenly done it before. But at times you are right the plate version is the preferred piece.
@@BevinsBricksWorld it depends. I tile would look better in a row of tiles, like the top of the wall of a modular building or a sidewalk and a plate would work better in e.g a sideways build wing that needs an offset somewhere in the middle. I meant often people replace it for the cheaper version not realizing they get the wrong part becuase bricklink (and studio) names them the same. took me a while to figure out what they meant with the groove :D
If you want the lego number (and link to lego) You can paste the bricklink number in rebrickable and they tell what the lego number is. Grtz, SG from Belgium 🇧🇪
@BevinsBricksWorld I am not sure what ot means. I just copy the/a number of bricklink in search on rebrickable and go to that piece page. The links are listed under External Sites (at the bottom on mobile or on the right on desktop)
rebrickable is an absolute beast of a resource. They really help bridge the gaps between the different buying options and offer so many great features.
It is always smart to check the 2 but these are extremely niche situations. That first green part is going to be at the same price or less on BrickIink soon, if it hasn't happened already. And the Dark Red part, why would someone buy the most expensive option? Off course, you would go for the 60cents option which is cheaper by quite a bit compared to P&B.
Well I recorded that green part today, so it will be awhile before it drops down. But yes if it becomes a regular part the price will drop. But I have found several pieces that are very common that still ends up being over priced on bricklink vs pick a brick. But it does also work both ways.
@@BevinsBricksWorld It appears that LEGO doesn't sell the 6l bar piece in green, only in bright green, even though the picture on pick a brick looks green.
@@thebrickbuilderstudio Yes the color renders on the Lego website are often bad. Medium stone gray for example looks more like the dark one and the dark one looks more like black. I have ordered hundreds of wrong parts in the past because of those crappy renders...
I ordered a some sets from Bricklink and they arrived all broken apart and in pieces!! I couldn't even give them to my kids it was so embarrassing. I gave the seller a horrible review but please beware!
I try to warn people about certain types of Bricklink seller and especially the ones who buy from lego and sell at a higher price or the ones that have a huge inventory but mark the price up by 100x. People generally get defensive about it, sometimes pretty rude, obvious reseller scum trying to hide their schemes behind the good people that keep bricklink going. If it's not resellers attacking me for trying to share knowledge it's people trying to attack TLG like TLG doesn't own bricklink to begin with. With free shipping, cash back and GWP buying brand new parts can be a lot cheaper directly from lego even if it takes a month and a half to get them.
Actually TLG does now own bricklink. They acquired it in 2019, they made several new rules after the acquisition as well, like no custom parts can be sold on bricklink. But they do not control the individual sales.
I agree being in the UK some of our Lego stores have a reasonable selection on the PAB wall but not exactly what you need so I alway check both places for elements for my MOCs .

I ordered from Lego pick a brick and shipping was very expensive with a month long wait. Not worth it for me 🤷♂️
bricklink categorizes some things wrong. like those jumper plates.

I was not aware of that, how do you link ot to do that ?
@BevinsBricksWorld
I am not sure what ot means.
Man I wish I saw this video 4 weeks ago 😢

Yes the color renders on the Lego website are often bad. Medium stone gray for example looks more like the dark one and the dark one looks more like black. I have ordered hundreds of wrong parts in the past because of those crappy renders...
I have order from Bricklink and Brick Owl. Brick Owl is far easier to use than Bricklink in my opinion.
You dont have as many fees on brickowl also.
For me, Lego says it's $35 for free shipping. Peace!
Sadly its different for different countries, I can only speak for how it is in the USA
Great info Daryl I use brick link and Lego as some parts are cheaper than Lego on brick link.
Yeah they are both great, just got to be aware to check both is all 😀
I agree being in the UK some of our Lego stores have a reasonable selection on the PAB wall but not exactly what you need so I alway check both places for elements for my MOCs .
