Someone asked me on Facebook to send good vibes their way, so just as a joke I thought I'd look up some vibe playing on TH-cam and link it to them. Holy crap! This was incredible.
@pcelayes Yes, the vibraphone has a foot pedal to deaden the sound when you want, and it also has a motor that spins disks inside the pipes beneath the keys that can be adjusted to whatever speed vibrato you want. I play vibes in jazz band. They sound amazing!
Roy Ayers, a master of the Vibes. The great Lionel Hampton gave Ayers, at age five, his first pair of vibraphone mallets. Roy Ayers took it to another level. I'm sure Lionel Hampton would be proud. Saw him at the Tower Theater in Philly in the early 1970s.
Incredible !! I saw roy ayers in 2003... one of the best concerts of my life. I gotta get this DVD asap !! Cool to see zachary breaux 's playing a gretsch too lol
That's Dwight Gassaway, who sadly died a few years ago. Guitarist Zachary Breaux is no longer with us either, and the drummer Dennis Davis passed away just this year. I was due to see Roy play here in England back in April (would have been the first time for me, and the fulfillment of a long-held ambition) but due to Dennis' being ill he had to cancel. Fortunately, Roy is still playing when he can and I believe he is back out there on the road again - you can't keep a good man down for long!
You might be thinking of a good friend of mine who just sadly to say, passed away earlier this year, Billy Wooten from Indianapolis (he was originally from New York and was a part of Grant Green's band before going out on his own). He was a great talent as is Roy Ayers. The vibes man, are great to hear when played right!
Great stuff. Dwight and Roy used to do this routine quite a bit and it was always popular. I've a recording of them running it at the Prestatyn Soul Weekender, broadcast live on Radio 1 - to be honest I think they were even better on that occasion, with Dave Metcen on bass (better than William Allen IMO).
@MrLlamaPro, yes, they're all played the same cause they're all basically the same instrument, but with varying sizes, materials, sounds, and numbers of octaves.
Riiiiiight onnn ✊🏽 I played with Roy Ayers. Gave me a 30 second on da spot audition and let me on the stage with him. One greatest nights of my life🩵
Awesome story
One of the greatest battles of all time. Right up there with Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris.
This is what real musicians should aspire to be like!!!
