Interesting. I'm currently going through this right now, having to decide. But it might be an easier decision for us, because we have a ton of customer info and documents that need to be stored. But we also have employees with iPads out in the field that need access to that information, they need to be able to read and write the files, especially remotely. Would an on-premise server be able to handle that? Btw right now we are using iCloud and the accompanying apps. Thanks for the time.

I'm thinking about this from a Microsoft Exchange point of view. It's possible that Microsoft Exchange on prem will offer higher performance and lower costs compared to Exchange Online but I think the benefits stop there. For businesses that don't have the IT staff to manage on prem servers, it makes sense to have the Cloud provider look after the reliability and security of the service.
