EVERYONE asking "what about this brand?"
I state at the beginning of the video that I'm only going to talk about brands that I have had hands on time with, and if I don't mention a brand it doesn't mean I haven't heard of it, it just means I can't give any experience based opinions on it.

If you haven't had experiences with more than just the brands you mentioned then you don't have enough experience in car audio and don't really have the position to give your opinion.

I trust this guy! I am also a Rockford fan! After hearing what he said about Rockford speakers not being the best.... I only wish I found this video before purchasing components. I have not had them installed but after this review, I do believe I will resale them. Also I was looking to purchase Sound Stream as and amp to power my Rockford components (highs and mids) but now...oh no no... right on time! Thanks guy!!! Thanks to you I will be looking into Rockford Amps and Subs! Great video by the way.. I watched this without WiFi and on my data plan. It has been worth the suffering I will approach later. Thank you!

Interesting video mate, I respect that you're only giving input with your experiences with products you've directly used and worked with. Little bit of a shame that some other things mustn't have made their way into your workshop yet, I've been using alpine pdx amps for a while and I will say when I switched one for a focal fpp4100 the difference wasn't too obvious but focal definitely produce a cleaner, clearer and far smoother sound from that amp when compared to the alpines I was using anyway. Could be a ab vs class d thing but who really knows. Regarding subs, have you ever worked with an alpine type r subs? I'm not sure if you mentioned them but man if you haven't then you really should, they really are incredible subs for the money and are capable of a lot! Anyway rather than drawing the comment out too long I'll just leave it at that, would be interesting to chat with you sometime. My current setup is a clarion cz702 deck, hertz hi energy 3 ways in the front (amazing), image dynamics idmax 12" in the boot. Run active through an alpine h800 processor, pdx 4.150 on midbass, pdx 1.1000 on sub and focal fpp 4100 on the midranges and tweeters.

I agree with most parts of the video, I have only dealt with Alpine, Sony, Focal. Currently have Focal speakers and underseat sub and damn they sound amazing! However they do come at a cost. I have heard Rockford speakers, amps and subs and they are amazing but that was in a car audio showroom.
I have videos of my car with Focal speakers, check it out if you like

Just come across this video. I agree with 100qof his opinions. I'm slightly old skool, so have experience with many older units from tape/CD/md and pioneer/alpine/RF/focal have consistently been top, for most parts. The reason so much of the landscape has changed, because newer cars have mostly bespoke systems and for the average user does the job, compared to when a long time ago, audio was just an afterthought. So, only a few companies exist with the older ethos of quality, the rest compete on the cheaper end. Good video.

Enjoyed the info...especially about Soundstream. I owned a couple of Soundstream amps over 20 years ago that were some of the best amps I've ever heard, so I've been tempted by their cheap prices now. Glad to hear your opinion on that. I totally agree on Focal...JBL is a complicated issue for me. They're the biggest company and make some of the best home stuff I've ever heard, but it's just where they choose to place their products in the market that affect quality. If you ever get to listen to their K2 series home speakers I'd highly recommend it. Best I've ever experienced.

Based on my experience and quality for the money, these would be my personal picks:
    Head unit - Kenwood
    Amplifiers - Rockford Fosgate
    Speakers / Subs - Kicker
Yes, I realize there may be better brands out there, but at a certain point the cost just gets stupid.

I have very similar opinions of car audio. Pioneer makes GREAT radios but don't really like their other stuff. I do love Rockford Fosgate! The amp and sub I have are both made in the US! Sound great! I do like the aluminum subwoofer, aluminum is used a lot in pro audio and stuff and the subwoofers handle a lot more power than they say they can. The speakers are not as nice, but still are great for the money!

  • @Skarfar90
    @Skarfar90 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I really have to agree on your Pioneer statement
Their head units are among the finest there is for both SQ and SPL applications. User-friendly interface and easy to work with!
Did you know that Pioneer was the first company to feature a removable front-panel on their head units.. This was sometime during the late 80's
As for the speakers, the old(er) stuff was far superior to what you can buy today, with a much clearer and smoother sound compared to today's lineup. Especially when you come to the middleground between budget and high-end (The E-series / D-series in the US, in particular) - Even one generation in-between has a distinctive difference in sound characteristics. Where the older TS-E170ci has a very open and smooth mid-range, the newer TS-E171ci does not, and needs a lot of EQ'ing to sound right. Also the tweeters in the older set were pretty similar to the much more expensive pair found in the PRS lineup (large 1.25" soft-domes), compared to the newer 0.75" domes.. though both sets sports neodymium magnets, the older set needed a lot less power to shine.
As for subwoofers, the older SPL lineup was probably the best sounding subwoofers ever to come out of the factory (and quite possibly, the loudest subwoofers at the time, setting many records in the early 2000's)
The 5 and 6-series (TS-W305c / 306c and 255c / 256c) subwoofers were absolutely brilliant, and were probably the best budget-class subs that money could buy..
There were some series in between today's lineup and the 5/6-series. The early Champion-series subwoofers weren't too bad, and the Champion PRO lineup were rather unique in design, with an internal airtight chamber sandwiched between two cones. Apperantely made to sound better in smaller sealed enclosures (which in fact, they do), but works well in larger ported enclosures as well (which I have sitting under my table right now)
Skip forward some years, and the current lineup of subwoofers can't come close to the old ones, both in build-quality and sound.
The 11-series (TS-W311c and 261c) is the current lineup, and to say the least, they feel cheaply made.
The amplifiers are not too bad for their price, and they do rated power, as in RMS - not the big MAX power rating seen on the box (referring to BigDWiz' review and Amp-dyno of the GM-D9601)
And like the head units, the amplifiers do sound great, especially when you start to move into high-end territory

i agree as well... i have the DEH-X6910BT single DIN radio, and it and it's BT capability rocks, except in a hot car, with a hot phone... still have the radio, but not the car... i didnt want to get rid of it and when the car finally gets sold, it'll be a demo derby car, likely, as that's all its worth... but my current car is double DIN, so I may try to find a cheap one with GPS or Android auto...

I've heard lots of systems & different brand types. I've seen awesome setups that sounded Dreadful, then I've seen crappie setups that sound really good. It took me awhile to put my system together in my truck but I went with Rockford Fosgate a little spendy but well worth it. 8 speakers in my cab & 2 subs all Rockford Fosgate. 2 tweets 4 mids 2 in my extended cab doors. I went with 2, 15in 2000 watt Rockford Fosgate Power T2's , with Rockford Fosgate 2500 watt amp & a Rockford Fosgate 600 watt amp for the 8 speakers in the cab. I replace all the stock wire to all the speakers & had a 6 cell $220.00 Optima battery for my extra power source Which was only hook to the 2500 watt Rockford Fosgate amp. My CD deck is a touch screen Clarion & you could hear my truck coming 4 blocks away. I'm about $7,600.00 into my system & like I said well worth it especially when my body goes numb & I can't see because my eyes get blurry. Rockford Fosgate all the way 👍👍👍...Kilo

I had $229 Sony head unit with $40 Sony speakers, the sounds just ok, but compared with my old JVC audio, Sony sound much better, the bass is more punchy (JVC and Sony at maximum bass) and the treble sound the same until I'm adding cheap little tweeter in the dash, now i'm happy how it's sound.

I have an all pioneer system. I have the FH-x820bs and its a great head unit. The speakers are the 4 way 6x8 speakers by pioneer and they have a really nice crisp sound to them and they are made well. The only negative is they need to be in some kind of enclosure to allow a decent level of bass output. but when in a nice door enclosure they put out a ton of bass considering the size of them.. (the pro series pioneer speakers are top end in my opinion) The amp is the gm-d9601 by pioneer and it was tested on the amp dyno and the output was 806 watts at 2ohms(rated 800). and the subwoofers I have are two 10" pioneer ts-w261s4 subwoofers. They are fairly inexpensive but they have decent sized double stacked magnets and a steel basket. well made in my opinion. Overall I love my system and it has great volume and sound quality. somewhere in the area of 125-130db when i really crank into it. I have a db meter i use to test it.
Overall I love my system in my SUV and it cost less than 800 dollars.
but I would like to know what you think of Kicker? I would like to know what you think of them

I learned a lot about JVC.. I thought too they were cheap until I purchased one of their Theater DILA projectors. Hands down that projector blows away tons and tons of brands projectors we all know about like Optima, Sony, InFocus and the likes. Their projectors are so damn good you will never see it in a Best Buy or chain store. Lit up on my screen innovations black diamond screen... nothing compares. It looks better than actually going to the Dolby Atmos theater here in Detroit. Super vivid color. I can vouch for JVC also in 1991!... my father won a raffle and got one of the first compact digital shelf stereo systems on the market and it was a JVC. Not like that boom box shelf system behind you but real deal good specs. Those tiny little 3.5" woofers back then blew me away when they were just as loud and cleaner than some 12"s I had at the time. The tiny stereo put out 100 x 4 rms not peak as well. It was also one of the first home stereo compact systems with the digital cassette system and lots of other features I was blown away about and never forgot because still to this day Sony has not or Bose has not made as good of a system as that one was. I've never met anyone or known anyone with that compact stereo my father won.

I tend to agree with this assessment on all counts.
$ for $ Alpine Type R is hard to beat for Components and Coaxial for the average punter. You can lean on them pretty hard and they take it easily assuming you can feed the power to them.
$ for $ the Fosgate amps are bloody brilliant for what they do.
unless your chasing serious SQ or SL you wont go wrong with a Pioneer HU, Alpine speakers and Fosgate amp, well not for the same money atleast.

    @tatsumaru12345 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    My experience..
Rockford fosgate? Each of the '1st' 3 amplifiers I've bought, have had issues. Usually turn on problems. BUT! The replacements have been the most reliable, and best sounding amplifier ever. I guess quality control of 'likely' getting returned amplifiers back on sale, is a problem.
MB Quart until around 2014 or so, was an amazing alternative brand. I had a set of 5.25'' components, and a 4.80 4 channel amplifier. Awesome. Well, later I bought one of the newer 600.4 amps. And I had nothing but problems. On paper it was much more powerful than the 4.80. 300w bridged on channels 3/4, didn't sound half as powerful as my rockford 500x1d with the same wattage at 4ohms.

I enjoyed watching this. I love my Pioneer HU and Focal Utopia W-XP woofers, so I found myself in much agreement. I believe you were a bit tough on Focal subs, apparently they made a dud that you spoke of (which was interesting), but their Utopia subs are amazing. Finally, I know you were speaking only to the brands listed, but the Morel Supremo Piccolo tweeters are mind-blowingly good.

I have an 02 Mustang GT convertible and I have an old school a/d/s/ PQ 20 bridged for my front using Polk Audio components I have a ( Purchased back in 2013)Sound Stream REF 4.920 Bridged to 2 Morel 12" Ultimo subs as well as a over kill Sound stream (2013 Purchase) REF 2.640 for the Polk Audio components in the rear. I have a Kenwood Excelon DMX907S head unit I have just received from a friend who has had it for a bit just had to recover some of his initial investment(Didn't tell wife before purchasing) LOL.. but have not replaced my single din Pioneer I have running things ... it sounds pretty good just its getting pretty cold out so I have no desire to deal with the elements to install my new deck. I hammer my sound stream amps pretty hard on a daily and they have had zero issues BUT I will not purchase anything but Audio Control in the Future. Its sad that a/d/s/ no longer exists as that PQ20 is so nice.

pioneer has a nice amp. the GM8601. 800w RMS, 1ohm stable, CEA cert, someone did an amp dyno for the 1200w RMS version and it did better than rated so im sure the GM8601 does rated. $109 free shipping brand new off amazon too. I got it on 2 older Rockford P3s in my truck, but not too old. The ones with the blueish cones. Does about 137-140db.

If I had to nominate brands that seem to get a lot of coverage in the US but I have little first hand knowledge of here in Oz:
KICKER - seem to be aimed at folks under 30 - anyone ?
JL Audio - reputedly top notch - never seen or heard their gear but I dont get out much
Clarion - another company that *had* a good name, but now ?
Sane responses to any of the above most welcome. Thanks again for the vid.

Unfortunately that Rockford Fosgate T400x4, does not put out close to that without the harmonic distortions being thru the roof.. I have & also talked to others who have tested it, & found that it typically got 64 watts RMS per channel with 2 ohm load at 14.4 volts, and to get 92 watts RMS we dropped it to 1/2 ohm & the THD was some 12.0% which is crazy. This test was also done using a 1k signal. Regardless it still is impressive for its size. Would be great to power speakers for highs, like mid powered coaxials or something.
Otherwise Rockford is definitely great in general.
    Focal is incredible!!!
JBL & Infinity are both by Harman Kardon
Orion sold out as did many who still ride their once great name.
Regardless you hold a decent channel.
Coming from another professional, you seem quite knowledged
    Keep it up.

I'll not be so sure that small size with a lot of power it's a good combination. Remember about heating. When the amplifiers are bigger, they have more space inside and have bigger radiator, so they keep lower temperature inside, so the transistors have more effectiveness. It's not e big deal to make smaller amplifier. But open that big Sony witch is 4x70 RMS and see how many space thay have inside and how big is the body witch is a radiator made of aluminum, against that small, tight 5x100 RMS Rockford. It's like compare laptop and PC. Laptop always will be less effective than PC. Because everything inside is tight in small body and the cooling system is worst. A temperature is bad for transistors and theirs effectiveness.

Open your horizons and research gear that your shop doesn't sell. Arc Audio? Image Dynamics? Zapco? Illusion Audio (Carbon Series speakers), Hertz?- I could go on but you get the idea. Maybe attend a few trade shows like CES. Props for giving the video a go but there is more out there then what your distributor allows you to sell per contact and market saturation.

I have a double DIN JVC head unit in my jeep. Its amazing in looks, usability, and adjustability. It was $249. I also have a Pioneer Double DIN in my ford and its a little worse than the JVC in every way (but still a decent unit), and it was $299. Every pair of Infinity speakers I have ever owned sounded fantastic (bought my first pair in 1989), and if you step up to the midlevel or higher end JBL stuff its really good gear.. I DO think Sony and Soundstream are cheesy these days and not even on my radar. Atleast we agree on something

Great video. I agree with you on your ratings. But I will say it's not really fair to compare a $1,300 set of three way speakers to a $350 pair. I know Focal makes an entry level speaker set that is around the same price as Alpine. I wonder how they would compare ( I do plan on using Focal for my next build). Some brands that I love that you haven't had experience with are JL Audio, MTX, RE Audio, Audison, US Amps, Powerbass(not sure if they still exist), MB Quart and for a quirky head unit that sounded good Nakamichi(not sure if they are still around either).

No brand loyalty here. I've got a combo of Pioneer, Kicker, Alpine, and Dual in my minivan. Reason why I have a mix of brands is due to buying a lot of it used for nowhere near what they were worth to begin with.
I.E. I have two sets of 12s, with each set being in its own ported box. One set are Alpine Type-Rs, and the other set are Kicker Comps. I got them, with their boxes, for $200 altogether. The Pioneer amp I'm using to power them also came with the Kickers when I got them. My head unit and door speakers are Pioneer, and the amp that I use for the doors is a $60 Dual from Wal-Mart.
