    On one hand, it's hard to imagine a Tom without that unbelievable working environment. On the other, yeah, every time I see him in that space I can only wonder how he could possibly find the time. I was once a gear hoarder and purging all but the bare essentials was the best thing I've ever done for myself as a creative. Looking forward to meeting monastic Tom.

      @@distantcometsProphet 600, DX7, Ace Tone Top 9 (a combo organ), CR-5000 drum machine, plus a decent guitar, bass, and amp for each. Sample libraries for realistic needs. As far as I’m concerned, it’s perfectly well rounded. Studio could fit in a walk in closet at this point and I’m more productive than I’ve been in 20 years. Time chasing gear is time that is better spent making art.

    • @distantcomets
      @distantcomets 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skaneverdies Boom, that is a terrific setup! You're stronger willed than I am! I'm still whitling down, but my keepers are a Juno 106, Argon8, Roland FP-3 (a digital piano/organ/EP/strings), Digitakt, TR8s, and then a Les Paul and some pedals. I've got an Analog Four that's on the bubble, but it's sooo useful for sequencing and playing live, it's hard to let it go. All the timbres are covered.

      it's kinda like the difference between the atariST/amiga and the pc's of today. the limitations of that old stuff forced you to think about what you were doing and how to do it.
      it also forced you to make hard choices of what to use and what not to as the amount of memory for samples was so limited while today it's almost unlimited.
      on the amiga i had 4 mono channels, 8 if i hooked two amigas together, and now i don't even know how many channels i can use simply because i never reached the limit.
      limitations force you to be more creative

    This is very common, I think? Transition from "more and more" to "Less stuff, that I will use more often."
    Many of us grew up loving synths - but they were hard to find anywhere *(and inexpensive.) Over time, you buy more and more and more. Pedals, amps, mics, guitars, outboard FX. Then you start to use only a few key pieces, and NEW gear suddenly starts to get better. Old stuff has a charm - and value, but then work, reliability, and value/range become important. I had SO many synths, some stupidly rare (like one of a kind). Eventually, I got rid of almost ALL of it except the Moog modular, Solaris, and Andromeda. I kept about 5 pedals, and everything else was sold to pay bills and make more space.

    So far. Hardware synths are maybe not significant better but if you're using them, you sound special, because especially vintage gear have a lot of imperfections in the sound. If you are only rely on plugins, no matter what you're try, you sound like 10000 others composers by default (unless your are Arca). Additionally - Junkie XL own voice is Brass and Drums, so he don't need to keep all this gear. And last - thanks to Hans Zimmer, film music don't need to rely on hardware synth sound anymore. Modern film music required one or two nice sound design from electronic, the rest could be from Diva, Zebra, all Arturia stuff mixed usually with orchestra sounds - but despite I love those vst those soundtracks mostly are very forgettable. And in this kind of mix it is really doesn't matter if you're using hardware or software. But if you tried hardware and your ear is used to hear real filters every plugin sound worse than hardware. Also artist like Amon Tobin, Autechre, NIN, Aphex Twin - their sound is not possible to rely on plugins. But - also too much is just too much and it is really strike your creativity.

      I wouldn't be surprised if he at some point he regrets selling something because he found a use for it that he previously didn't have. That being said, he has way to much gear. There is no way he uses all of it enough to where it will make a noticeable difference in his life. It's just hoarding and someone else will get better use of the things. It makes more sense someone having it if the person will actually use it regularly, otherwise, it seems like such a waste have these instruments just collecting dust, especially considering the rarity of them.

    Plugins are well developed now.... They take over and do the job.. Arturia, Korg, Roland, UVI , Synapse, U-he, Native Instruments and even smaller companies like memory moon (the M80 and Messiah are brilliant). Hardware is great but too costly. For studio work more and more composers are now choosing plugins. Having hardware for nostalgic reasons is great but will catch up on most people. From a few synth artists I know they've sold their massive collections as well and made the move to plugins. Yes plugins are not the same as hardware...I know...

    I would not trade my CS-60 for a CS-70M. I've listened to a lot of CS-70M demos and it just doesn't do anything for me. The CS-40M, however, is very interesting. I would like to own one of those someday. The 40 and the 70 are related, but they don't sound the same. If Santa gave me $25K to spend on these instruments, I'd go after the 40M, the Sequential T8 and the Jupiter 8. But all of these are going to sell for a premium, so $25K probably wouldn't be enough. Doesn't matter. I don't have $2,500, let alone $25,000.

      @@dawatcherz I think you come close. Tom posted a comment on his channel yesterday (?) stating he needed a creative change and only keeping the synths that most frequently comes to use.
      And if he was unfortunate to go through a divorce (nothing such seems to be the case here) I'm pretty confident his financial situation would deal with that without having to sell anything at all.

    The synth world has never been more exciting than today. There is true freedom from turning my back on looking backwards. I can look at this guy's collection or synthmania videos and not covet their sh!t. Besides, i already have a 1st gen DX7 with a dead battery and messed up output section that needs resto work. and that's just 1 thing.
    if there isnt some nostalgia or another collector involved, i've lost the plot as to why people will want this gear. and you know it will be overpriced because of nostalgia.

    Gear wants to be played... Congrats to Tom for the great gear sell off. Some think he'll regret it, but I seriously doubt that. This collection hurtled past "studio" at some point and ended up at "museum." Plus, I doubt that even if he were to sell 90% of his gear he'd be unable to make anything with the rarities he decides to keep.

      Yep. One flagship poly and one flagship mono will get him eighty percent of the sounds he'll probably ever need. Those few exceptions he can't Iive without have to have within their soul a magic that can't be duplicated. For me, the two synths that fit in that category are the Knifonium, and the Yamaha CS-80. When any of these two are utilized there is an epic character in their respective timbres that is almost magical. They elevate everything they are paired with. You got one or two that fit that category for you?

    • @distantcomets
      @distantcomets 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saladdays180s9 I don't have a CS-80 budget just yet, but I bought myself a Juno 106 about five years ago and have never been disappointed. That noisy chorus, the warmest pads ever, and a surprisingly heavy bass in unison mode. There's also this digital piano I bought from a church - a Roland FP-3. Nothing special on paper, but I swear all that praying must have gotten infused into it, because it sounds way better, and is more inspiring, than it has any right to.
