Dr. Novak did rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder six years ago. I am 76 yrs. Great result. In six months was back to golf, rowing, and lifting weights. Unfortunately there has been cartilage degeneration and further tearing. He recommended a reverse replacement when the time came I thought it was necessary. This video was incredibly helpful in answering a lot of questions I had about the surgery. Good job Dr. Novak

A wonderful group of of people asking the right questions questions. 2024 April 24 I had complete reverse right shoulder replacement at Oregon’s OHSU. I have osteoporosis and only for one year at age 72. I am a choreographer and costume maker who hopes to be able to complete my last dance called MoonDance performed outdoors at a summer Full Moon. 🌕

Dr. Novak - I’m 71 yrs old, overweight but in pretty good health. I’m having reverse shoulder replacement surgery in about three weeks on my non-dominant arm. I have arthritis in most of my joints and just had a total knee replacement five months ago. I’m not sporty but did start scuba diving when I was 57. I love seeing the beauty of what’s underwater! But two surgeons told me that it would be too risky to dive after this replacement because it could slip/ dislocate. The surgeon I eventually chose seems very good, does the 3D scan in advance, and said that we’d have to see how I progress; at least he did not rule it out. What’s your opinion about this?

Your associate, Dr Hughes did a wonderful job on my mid-spine some years ago. Should referral triage for my shoulder be done by my PCP or your office?

Nice video! My reverse shoulder artroplasty was done Jan/2016. Outer rotation is none, pain is minimal. Raising shoulder not much higher than my head. My new doctor said my glenoid is loosening. Is it worth doing all this surgery if I don’t stress my shoulder and pain is minimal? I am waiting for second opinion (original surgeon), and to see if I have any infection. CT scan said one screw broken.
I never lifted heavy weights, but did light normal work. No sports, off road ATV’s. I would think that not stressing shoulder is better than going to the table and have two surgeries is rolling dice? I am 70 years, ex Fireman, and athletic. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Will

I am getting close to making the decision to do the shoulder procedure not sure which will be chosen, but I want to thank you for the very informative look at what is available. The section with the patient pointed out the issue of accepting the pain as "normal" and how it affects say to day living. I am a medicare patient, is medicare accepted for this procedure?

I imagine it varies from one patient to another but, I had mine on August 8th and it only took an hour and a half. My surgeon said it was a bit faster than he expected. Good luck to you.
