My first time in Nepal in 1995, I had just come from India. I was in Durbar Square Kathmandu. A young man approached me and asked me if I wanted a guide. I said no. He left me in peace. I was amazed. In India, if you've been there, you know, they never leave you alone. You have to get up and leave.
I'm Indian and unfortunately this hasn't changed much in 2023 ("24 in a week) except people are more used to seeing foreigners but the lower working class like the taxi drivers, guides still act rude, do not take no for an answer and are kinda predatory even with other Indians. Not all off course but there sure is this hustling culture of trying to make a buck at the expense of the comfort of other humans. I've always been envious of other tiny countries with low populations for this reason. The people seem so chill and laid back in these countries unlike india. And to be fair, people are chill and laid back in my tiny Rajasthan village as well and nobody would really try to scam you, bc there's no competition for resources and money in villages and small towns.
