I love how they give the animals voices without humanizing them too much. Things like dogs, owl bears, spiders, and frogs all talk exactly how you’d imagine they’d talk.
When Scratch said the bit about his master always using his cloak to warm him up and thats what he was doing to the Owlbear, that hit me in the feels man. Scratch really is the bestest boy 😭😭
oh and when you find out where he came from you will want to murder hobo the whole town. Gommick was nice to him but the houndmaster for their post office is a monster.

Scratches is genuinely the best companion you can have in the camp. Also I love how every single animal sounds different depending of how smart the creature is. Dogs seen like inteligent enough to have a conversation but like they only undertand stuff at a basic level thats what makes then so wholesome, meawhile cats are like all self centered and talk with way more finesse; then stuff like spiders or rats are more like... they can barely talk and only understand basic instincts. Is a really cool take on talking to animals.

But as species they can in general numbers to be described as more extraverted, and more introverted. It just how they function. My take is, I love both. And one isn't really better than the other as animals. It just one might fit better for your personality and lifestyle.
This is why I always have Speak With Animals activated. One thing that was a little annoying, tho it might be a bug/oversight, is you currently can only get the achievement for petting Scratch and the Owlbear at the same time if you don't have the spell up
It's not that "you think": That's how it works sadly! Reason being the Achi only is obtainable if the game PROMPTS you to PET BOTH (two separate prompts) during the event! That prompt is absent if you have Speak With Animals active!
@@alexturner9571 You mustn't have Speak with Animals active while this cutscene starts. As you pet them seperately starting with Scratch the achievement basically means "hey, you have two hands for a reason, pet that owlbear with your other hand"
Having speak with animals up gives you this cutscene but annoyingly prevents you from getting the related achievement for petting both animals at the same time (at least it did when I played). I think it's because you no longer have the dialogue option to pet them.
Actually it's good that you didn't: If you have Speak with Animals spell on when this happens, you won't get the "You have Two Hands for a Reason" Achievement. The reason being the achievement only registers if you get the option to Pet Scratch then Pet Owlbear Cub and you get to pet them both... which is weird to be honest. I had to do another playthrough just to get this Achi alone because of this... well I ended up getting Karlach's Hot Date on that same playthrough so it's not a total waste of time!
So sad I missed owlbear cub because I accidentally revealed the location of the Druid camp and had to defend them from the goblins before I went to the owlbear nest.
@@sealacious the cub doesn’t appear in the goblin camp until you go to the owlbear nest. So I went to the goblin camp, went straight to Minthara, sazza told her about the druids, then I did my long rest and went to the Druid camp to defend them from the goblin army that was at their door. If you go back to the goblin camp they will now all attack you and by now the owlbear cub has been captured by them, so I was forced to fight the cub and had no way to save it. I did KO the cub instead of killing it but I couldn’t wake it up or talk to it about my camp.
@@jamierooney455did the cub attack you or did you attack it cause I saved the grove then did the owl bear fight then went back to the goblin camp and I was able to still recruit it even after fighting the goblins
He's north off the road outside the blighted village, before you enter it. North of him is a place where you can cross the river early and get to Karllach right off the bat.
My first playthrough i skipped right past him too! (Him, Karlach, Gale AND Lae'zel actually) i ended up reloading like 5 hours worth of gameplay to get him lol
My current run glitched and the cub never showed up at the goblin camp and now I'm gonna have to restart again T_T (totally worth it tho, I'm having a blast!)
I have no words for how seriously adorable this is. I was planning for my first character to be a cleric of the light domain, but I'm gonna make her nature domain just so she gets "speak with animals" as a skill from the start

Okay… I wish that an option you could do is have those adorable fluffy babies sleep with you, especially after the poor baby had a nightmare. It’d be so nice to cuddle with the floofs.

i've noticed that the more intelligent the animal type themselves are the less effects they have on their voice (could just be a coincedence) like scratch comes through very clear with very little of the effect going through, its really only on some specific words you can hear it. meanwhile our little owlbear friend you can hear the effect on his voice very well and i've noticed stuff like cats crows and i think rats? (tho i've only seen one rat talked to) come through exceptionally clear. though i'll need to double check and compare
I think that would be a coincidence; in the case of the owlbear and the dog, in D&D terms they have the exact same mental stats (though owlbear is just a cub, granted, but the mother's voice was also distorted from a regular human); Int 3, Wis 12, Cha 7. Cats have the same as well, though rats have lower (Int 2, Wis 10, Cha 4).
@Mewobiba and its well known that the vanilla stats for animals in dnd are super unrealistic and inaccurate, and BG3 strayed from the vanilla stats of the game quite a bit.

This scene and the horrifying spectacle of him eating his mother made me google if there was anything anywhere about Owlbears being cannibalistic. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything concrete, but I did see something that said they mate for life.
Well, it does _kinda_ track with the Monstrous Compendiums of various editions of the game saying owlbears are extremely territorial, aggressive and violent creatures who will often attack without provocation and actively hunt any creature bigger than a mouse. They also apparently have little instinct for self preservation and fear nothing, no matter if it is superior in size or numbers to them.

In fact, they could be encountered in the wild in packs of up to 8. It feels like Larian is following a headcanon here and I'm not even complaining because man does it really evoke some emotions when you see that baby just tear into its mother.
The cub was starving because his mother was hurt and couldn't hunt. Starving animals - even humans in extremis - eventually lose their cannibalism taboo. Birds more quickly than most.

Something I only just realized was a gendered dialog option watching this video: The bit where Scratch calls you "mistress". Obviously that is because you're playing a female character, and if you play as a male character he says "master". But the reason it never occurred to me that this specific dialog would be gendered is because I played as a nonbinary character, and Scratch called me "guardian" instead. When I initially played, I thought it was really cute how Scratch was making a distinction between me and his old master - like he still was "loyal" to his old master and I am just his current caretaker. But apparently that distinction only exists if you're playing a nonbinary character. If you're a man or a woman, it doesn't.
That distinction doesn't exist regardless of your settings. It is some mistakes in writing that make it look like there is a distinction, but also a lack of information on your own end. The phrase Master and Mistress refer to how things used to be in some regions. So Master would be the leader of a household effectively, typically male. Mistress could be a care taker or the Master's love interest. I'm unsure of Guardian having any ties or it was just used for the sake of "inclusion" forgetting that calling the character Master would work regardless of gender. If there was a distinction from this, it would be that Scratch would think less of females/non-binary people. It is just a case of writing out dialogue and not fully thinking things through, leading too assumptions and error.

I promise you that the dog is not ascribing you particular household roles based on gender. The dog is referring to you as its owner, using gender appropriate terminology.
I miss my owlbear cub. Game glitched out after the "You have two hands for a reason" scene and I went back to the goblin camp to finish up some stuff. Never saw him again. Apparently it's a well know bug but I didn't realize for a bit. Not going back 10+ hours to get him back. I do miss him tho.
It's odd, I did everything i needed for the owlbear to follow me to camp (gave him my scent) before i massacred the place. Many long rests later, still haven't seen him!
I just looked through the comments & I've seen that some people have missed characters on their first playthrough. I'm still on part/Act 1 and I found most if not all of them. I guess it's a good thing that I played pokemon so often to the point I got into the habit of looking into EVERY little thing XD Plus when my fiancé & I first got Scarlet & Violet, that's honestly ALL that we did. Just ran around and completely ignored the story for like... nearly a WHOLE week+. We'd joke around while we were playing together that Nemona was wondering where the hell we were XD

when i find scrathes i take him to the camp but the next day i found that mystreious bottle and decide to open it while in the camp, so that strong monster relaesa and we pick a fight in the camp but the monster target scrathes as his first victim (i cant understand why) he died at the battle, first i dont mind really thought 'im gonna resurrect him anyway' but i cant, he cannot be resurrect and i lost my dogy, this events is about 50 hours earlier but i still so sad about it

That distinction doesn't exist regardless of your settings.
It is some mistakes in writing that make it look like there is a distinction, but also a lack of information on your own end. The phrase Master and Mistress refer to how things used to be in some regions.
So Master would be the leader of a household effectively, typically male. Mistress could be a care taker or the Master's love interest. I'm unsure of Guardian having any ties or it was just used for the sake of "inclusion" forgetting that calling the character Master would work regardless of gender.
If there was a distinction from this, it would be that Scratch would think less of females/non-binary people.
It is just a case of writing out dialogue and not fully thinking things through, leading too assumptions and error.

I promise you that the dog is not ascribing you particular household roles based on gender. The dog is referring to you as its owner, using gender appropriate terminology.

I miss my owlbear cub. Game glitched out after the "You have two hands for a reason" scene and I went back to the goblin camp to finish up some stuff. Never saw him again. Apparently it's a well know bug but I didn't realize for a bit. Not going back 10+ hours to get him back. I do miss him tho.
Definitely going to get talk to animals for my first playthrough.
It's odd, I did everything i needed for the owlbear to follow me to camp (gave him my scent) before i massacred the place.

Yeah, it's an effect they added, it's often used to show a character is communicating telepathically

I just looked through the comments & I've seen that some people have missed characters on their first playthrough. I'm still on part/Act 1 and I found most if not all of them. I guess it's a good thing that I played pokemon so often to the point I got into the habit of looking into EVERY little thing XD Plus when my fiancé & I first got Scarlet & Violet, that's honestly ALL that we did. Just ran around and completely ignored the story for like... nearly a WHOLE week+. We'd joke around while we were playing together that Nemona was wondering where the hell we were XD

I love how the owlbear cub reveals that his mother ate his brother not as some horrific trauma in his past but just something that happened. Owlbears aren’t very sentimental, I guess.
Every time I go to camp, I gotta pet the dog. It is *mandatory* I pet that pup. When he gave me his ball, I almost panicked because I wanted him to have his ball back and didn't realize I could throw it and play catch with him.
Oh shit, I may need to play a druid just so I can PET ALL THE ANIMALS!

when i find scrathes i take him to the camp but the next day i found that mystreious bottle and decide to open it while in the camp, so that strong monster relaesa and we pick a fight in the camp but the monster target scrathes as his first victim (i cant understand why) he died at the battle, first i dont mind really thought 'im gonna resurrect him anyway' but i cant, he cannot be resurrect and i lost my dogy, this events is about 50 hours earlier but i still so sad about it
