As my old maths teacher used to say ‘read the question lad’. I am referring to the tubs not vocals. Wyatt’s drumming was not of the standard of Marshall’s required for more complex polyrhythms as displayed on 5 onwards. Yes, Robert’s vocals were excellent but not required for three- quarters of Third and from then onwards.
Such a great and original band back then with tunes full of surprises, textures and dynamics: and it is worth stressing that they were real melodies, too.
I remember this on TV, as some one pointed out this was introduced by Jo Melia. I remember him talking about some warehouse in London being converted into flats for £100,000. That would not buy you a manhole cover to sit on now.
Maybe BBC Session on December 29, 1972. London, BBC TV "Full House" Recording - "Fanfare" / "All White" and "Gesolreut" performed (broadcast February 17, 1973)
LOL nice slip. Carl Perkins wrote 'Blue Suede Shoes'. Karl Jenkins, is playing here, (and later wrote 'Adiemus') .I'd quite like to hear Soft Machine backing Carl Perkins..... An amazing band. You're right - it is off 'Six'. Thanks - you made me smile.
Thanxxxx ! The Legendary Soft Machine , with the unbelieveable Mike Rattlegde on the magic Fender Rhodes and too fantastic : Karl Perkins on Saxophones , John Marshall on Drums / Percussions and Hugh Hopper on Bass ! this amazing track is i think in the " Six" Album ! Yes , you are so right !!! But think it over ! Best periods of Bands often do not last more than twoyears , even if …. I am Musician by myself , I know what i am talking about :I learnt from SM , how to play in 7/4 bar and how to improvise ...
There was video of Mike Ratledge showing and explaining possibilities of using effects on his keyboards from the same BBC TV session I think, but seems to be gone. Any possibility you have it? Thanks anyway.
I remember this as well. the introducer was saying how clever they were for using a german word, like those who say how " articulate " footballers are who can put a couple of sentences together. they were never the same after robert wyatt left.
Saw this lineup in Brighton and the set appeared on the live concert recordings on "Six " . Not as good as the Wyatt , Dean band but a memorable group from their long history .
I don't think so, the melody doesn't goes like that, either the harmony I'm not sure but in music "gesolreut" means something that starts or has predominance on the fifth grade of a scale That makes more sense because they use a lot of dominant things on this song I cant explain it very well, english Is not my language
From Wikipedia: Gesolreut (sometimes split into the parts G sol re ut) is a music term dating to the medieval period. It is the word used for the pitches g and g♯ within the hexachord system devised by Guido of Arezzo. In short, no idea :)
Interesting for how it shows something seldom mentioned: how much Ratledge follows drummers for his rhythm, whether Wyatt or Marshall. But this is a typical Jenkins effort - too composed and lacking in the improvisational brilliance, at its best, of earlier stuff when Jenkins wasn't in charge for his well-composed, pleasant and minimalist, wallpaper music.
John Marshall RIP. Softs finest drummer
Second finest.........
Blasphemy!
Robert Wyatt was the heart and soul of this band, his playing and singing absolutely essential to what IS Soft Machine

The drumming...!
the late hugh hopper on bass best bass the softs ever had.

my favourite soft machine era

The keyboard duets w jenkins.... ❤ otherwise: elton
John Marshall, an overclocked poet
He's a drummer, silly
Line-up / Musicians
- Karl Jenkins / oboe, baritone & soprano saxes, electric & grand piano, celesta
- Mike Ratledge / organ, electric & grand piano, celesta
- Hugh Hopper / bass, sound effects (15)
- John Marshall / drums, percussion

Nice to see footage of Sir Karl when he was a jazzer.
Shades of "Freedom Jazz Dance" methinks ❤❤❤❤
Fantastic to see this...The 'Floating Drummer' just Love John's playing....
what a band..
Four minutes of excellence. A bit of development like we saw on SM 'Third' and this would've been another masterpiece.
such a groovy band so funky
Mike Ratledge was such a unique keyboard player
the late hugh hopper was the best bass player in sm jazzy funky raw grooves.
Marvelous
Catchy tune...
Outstanding
Looks / sounds terrific, thanks for sharing...
it just doesn't get any cooler than this ...
I agree with the comments, this awesome tune is all Bill Marshall's masterful drumming.

Thanks so much for posting this .... it's brilliant ... a real find.
The alternate title for this could be "John's Poor Hi-Hat Stand"
I'd love to know what hi-hats he was using here! They sound great!
He was using paiste 2002 s. John should've tied that hi hat stand down ! Haha
Looks as if there was a soft rug or carpet below.
Possibly paiste 602 or 2002 sound edge.

I believe it is from a program called "Full House," broadcast 12-29-72
Six / Seven era line up, sublime if I may say so?
Awesome! Big thanks to gamma:)
Promising opening but then settles into a groove, the drummer doing a lot of the work covering for the feeble keyboard solo.

Does anybody know what FX(s?) KJ is running his Rhodes through for his solo?
Ring modulator
John Marshall could be the best drummer the UK ever produced , and people wax lyrical about heavy-handed self-taught John Bonham
Brilliant - any idea what the programme is?

Soft Machine. There is no "The"
+Mike Reynolds Their was in the early days
+TheGenreman OK I stand corrected.
Wyatt leaves and it gets all fusiony...was to be expected.
It wouldn't be the 70s without long, pointlessly uncomfortable facial close-ups! Lol.
There's no 'showing off' here, we were told as children not to.
Karl Jenkins
Maybe he is a nice guy , but not in SM , go back to Nucleus ,
John Marshall made me quit drumming...😂
This line up made some quality music but Robert Wyatt being sacked from his band and being the singer and front man it's not the soft machine
What does gesolreut actually mean?

A faultless composition played by a first class band
elton dean on saxello
Elton Dean was no longer with the band . That's Karl Jenkins who was previously a member of Nucleus.
