    I’d venture to say a lotta work went into this video presentation and I thank all those involved for putting it together.
    Born and raised in Northern California in 1949, Ive been in northern Puget Sound (Washington state) since 1981, yet my roots in Great Britain still tug at me even though I’ve never been there.
    Again I thank all those involved in this wonderful audio-visual presentation.

    Fantastic doco, with the personal touch of fond memories of those who were involved in the Welsh narrow gauge restoration and others, who fought the good fight to keep important lines open.

    A most excellent vocal narration for an equally most excellent documentary: top marks for balanced and appropriate intonations to communicate empathy regarding the dearth of what we all cherish to an nth degree, and for which we are all sadly responsible, at least in part (we all like our cars that afforded us individual freedom to go wherever we wouldst, buy whatever we cared, and back to our hove doorsteps whenever and however late the hour…. But railways had their costs to cover and we couldn’t afford the tickets to cover, as for collectively paying through taxes collected…Maybe where we handed over so much to countries that scourged our very name…

    Fort William to Mallaig is a wonderful journey..have done it several times but it always rains in Fort William..another scenic line was the old Callander to Oban line this was closed before the Beeching era due to a land slip..nothing much left Callander Station site is now just a car park..

    • @flashmcglash
      @flashmcglash 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Russell Bloxsom Not strictly true. It closed in 1965 - well into the Beeching era! A date for closure of the line had been set, the rock fall just brought it forward by a few weeks.

      Made many a trip on the old Glasgow Buchanan Street to Oban line on our way to catch a steamer out to the Western Isles for a summer holiday. I can well remember the additional locomotive which had to be coupled onto the front of the train at Callander to help haul it up the steep incline at Glen Ogle; it would be uncoupled at Crianlarich and then run back down to Callander to wait for the next northbound needing assistance with the gradient. Happy days !

    When you exploit the laborers you get people who don't have anything to loose, and they were trying to gain something (anything) from their hard work....... either by stealing it or fighting for it. Not victims of circumstance, victims of greedy men who wanted to increase their own holdings by the sweat of others, and it is still happening today........

      Terry Thomas Wonder if you have made it here. Many years ago I travelled the Scottish Highlands route from Perth to Inverness. When trains had carriages holding 6 people and a corridor. At one point the train would ascend at a snail's pace and we'd look down onto the tops of Scots pine trees. Once, during a wintery dawn, everyone went to the corridor and opened the windows for a clear vision of tall, snow covered pines, and long icicles hanging on the trees. They shone purest gold glowing in the sun. There were many tourists. I looked at those near me, clearly overwhelmed, silent, awestruck, with tears flowing from their eyes. Most memorable. If you do come, Terry...enjoy. Oh, do plenty research prior to any destination decisions.

It was possible to get on the branch line from another direction, so we found that all the tokens would ,in time end up the wrong end . It is unfortunate that Henry Ford - with his wonderful mass-production of his automobile - ruined the train industry in America. If you live in Little Rock, Arkansas and want to take a simple train trip to Memphis, Tennessee - just 138 miles away - it takes over (YES OVER) 24 hours !!. Your train must go to Chicago, Illinois first - then on to Memphis. WHY - Henry Ford and his wonderful automobile made train travel worthless to travelers. Some Wonderful things can actually harm many people.

      I wouldn't say he was an ogre. He was, to me, a short-sighted, non forward thinking man, who had no thoughts of the future.
      He was backed up by a Tory Government, a bit like today, when they want to build the HS2 - a monstrosity that will run for the benefit of London & Birmingham, but at the cost of everyone, including those living in Wales & Scotland! Far better to spend the money on reinstating some of the lost lines, and reduce congestion nationwide!

    • @peterbradshaw8018
      @peterbradshaw8018 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wyn Parkin I would have to do more research on the HS2. I am rather wary of anti-tory rhetoric. The other day I heard someone blame Thatcher for the destruction of the local auto industry. I have intimate knowledge of that so I keeled over with laughter. Research in econ and finance is pretty boring but it will prove what lengths people will go to advance a political cause by telling blatant lies.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't agree. Beeching was a great visionary who saved a lot of money and brought the railways into the modern age. We have far too many preserved steam and diesel locomotives clogging up the sidings of heritage railways. These are rusting away, creating health and saftey issues, problems of parts being sold on the black market, and pollution etc.
      This mess needs to be cleared up now. These rusting hulks need to be cut apart, broken up and the various metals melted down to make new and useful items.
      It's only a matter of time before a lot of these "preserved" locos will face the shears and the torch.

    • @wynparkin4733
      @wynparkin4733 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      heelfan1234
      Afraid you are in a minute minority!
      When I said he had no forward thinking, I was right. At the time when he destroyed Britains' Railways, the coalfields were in charge and like in the welsh valleys, most miners walked to work and the rest used a workers train. But, when the Tories decided to destroy the coalfields too, people then had to travel to find work, and not many miners had cars. If the railways had still been available then we wouldn't have the acres of tarmac, and the gridlocks, that we have now. As for preserved railways being health and safety problems, which should be scrapped, I am left wondering why you have been looking at these videos! They are our history and everyone loves these railways, Why else would they be able to survive even though Beeching did his worst by been an idiot!

    Regarding the Scottish section of this upload: Hey, Scottish-sounding narrator: 'Lock'? Try 'Loch'. To which demographic are you (and the producers of this embarrassment) projecting?
    This is a pish-poor attempt at redefining Scottish 'history' (via steam-locomotive-driven transport), replete with ersatz, tartan flummery.
    As well as reading John Prebble's 'The King's Jaunt', educate yourself with: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visit_of_King_George_IV_to_Scotland
