- Is this Yorkshire's Most Beautiful Lost Railway? The Whitby to Loftus Line
The Whitby to Loftus Railway has been closed since 1958.
Much of the route does however remain with numerous relics and reminders of the railway that once served the likes of Sandsend, Staithes and Kettleness.
In Part one of this series i begin my journey at the former Whitby West Cliff Station passing along the coastal cliff edges where 4 viaducts once stood proud but all now removed.
I head on up towards the site of Sandsend Station that still survives today.

Superb footage of what must have been an incredible railway experience and an engineering marvel. The closure of the line, as you suggest, is something to lament, although you wonder whether it would have survived what looks like a significant amount of cliff erosion. The archive clip of a steam train entering Sandsend Station and disgorging all those passengers makes a vivid impression. Might it be the same today, if the line had remained in being?
I'm pleased you enjoyed it Malcolm and thank you. I do feel it would be busy but more in a tourism " ride along the coast" journeys although I know I'd travel up there for a break too
Movie footage and not an accurate depiction of the line in 1947. It's from the film Holiday Camp starring Jack Warner as Joe Huggett. The film was released on 5th August 1947.

@@neiloflongbeck5705 I’ve seen that film many times and I do think they used actual railway footage for the film, none of the actors were shown getting off the train.
They then caught the bus supposedly to Butlins in Filey I suppose, via Lythe bank, which is shown in the film. I can’t think they went to the trouble and filmed this for the film, in fact most of the film was shot on set.

What a magnificent railway and after the Larpool viaduct.I remember as a four year old standing below the tressel at sandend with an ice cream in my hand watching in haw as a train passed over.It was like something out of the Wild West.Your presentation plus the information and your respect the privacy of the locals is outstanding.I’ve watched this four times already!
This brought back so many memories of exploring that line. Can't wait for the next part, with the tunnels and beautiful views. Whenever I visit North Yorkshire, I always go back for another look!! Great of you to do this, Ant.

What a fantastic video. We had a friends holiday in Yorkshire a few years ago at Robin Hoods Bay. We all fell in love with Yorkshire. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for history, great cinematography and narration. Cheered me up as I have either covid or bad flu. Can go to bed happy.

I've always been fascinated by this line, and never wanted a time machine as much as I do now. Your atmosphere of your videos is enchanting, the choice of music is spot on and creates a sympathetically nostalgic mood. The drone photography is wonderful and captures the beauty of North Yorkshire perfectly - tourism companies should be snapping at your heels for some of this footage!

Note that the Loftus to Whitby line was closed in 1958 which was a few years before Beeching was employed to wield his infamous Axe. Just a few years ago the site of Newholm Viaduct was landscaped when the new sea wall was built so more remains were lost. Larpool Viaduct was built of brick because the designer, Francis Fox, was concerned about its vicinity to the effects of the sea. Several of the iron viaducts were extensively repaired because of corrosion and the deteriorating condition of them all was one of the reasons given for closure in 1958. Larpool Viaduct of course still stands.

Thinking about the tracks as we see them now compared to how they were when active and the difference is huge. There would have been no vegetation at all on active lines, no trees, no weeds, nothing, just ballast and tracks. All kept clear with active walking and weedkillers. Just an observation.
The iron pillars of the viaducts were filled with concrete. The initial estimate for the construction of the line was £235,278 of which £66,100 was for the viaducts and tunnels. In the end the line cost £655,077 (in 2010 prices that's a whopoing £32 million) or £40,942 per mile. These figures come from Michael William's dissertation.

Simply excellent - thank you. What a delightful railway this would have been today, if it had survived the axe; but probably a cash-pit for maintenance with the coastal erosion problems.
I don't like that the old station building is named "Beeching Mews" - I'm not happy to see his name celebrated like that. On a different note - I do wonder if "The Fat Controller" in Thomas The Tank Engine was based on Dr Beeching.

It is strange since this was closed in 58 over a couple of factors and Beeching cuts were 60s. But a wrong choice of name definitely.

The carriages can be stayed in. Search under the words ‘Sandsend Sleeper and Parcel Wagon’. Information is there plus a video link to them installing the carriages on TH-cam. Interesting.

The photos I've seen of the Whitby to Loftus railway certainly qualify it to my mind as the most spectacular abandoned railway in Yorkshire. I'm thinking particularly of the various viaducts that were a feature of the line.
Beautiful video again Ant. You pick the best weather and views. It would be amazing with Light rail on this route now. Failing that put some new light weight bridges in and carry on the cinder track.

What a superb video, such an Engineering feat with that terrain, and so sad it’s all gone, apart from the remains of a bygone era.
What a great video. I love it up there. Went on holiday to Yorkshire for the first time last year, staying at Bouby, and we did lots of walks around that area, including the one you did, apart from , we walked from Sandend car park below the station to Whitby and back again. I hadn't realised the railway was so close to the sea! Well done brilliant video, good music, good drone footage, and to top it off great old time photos and bit of film!

What an absolute gem. I’ve visited the one that Martin Zero videoed (Aspull Pumping pit) and had the fright of my life when I peered down the man hole (also had no cover) and it was a 100 foot drop.
I wonder how deep that bottom of this one was had it not been filled with water 😮

I recently went from my home in Saltburn to Whitby on the X4 bus. A pretty journey passing through many valleys with lovely country-side.
It would have been nice to have gone on the train. There is still a spur from Saltburn to the Bowlby Potash Mine used all the time to take Potash from the mine to Teesport. The remains of stations at Brotton, Boosbeck and Loftus are still there and there is fairly modern bridge from Carlin How to Skinningrove ,just before Loftus.
Absolutely fantastic video 👍🏻 Really enjoyed watching that. Except, I am longing for summer now 😢 I miss those days in a T-shirt and the sun is out 😢

How iconic I'm whitby born and bred my mother still has a house near upgang Lane, and I never knew the viaducts were skerne iron works, Darlington... which is where I now live
Thanks for another great video. Nice to sit at home on a wet, cold winter's evening and watch you walking in the summer sunshine only a few miles away from here. Reminds me of pleasant walks along the beach to Sandsend with the dog! The coast line was a lovely route with great views out to sea and it's a sad shame that it's not still there as it would be a great line for tourists all the way from Scarborough to Middlesbrough. Still worth the effort to walk where it can be accessed and between Whitby and Scarborough it makes a good days ride on a mountain bike!

Thank you for another really enjoyable video. I live in Middlesbrough and have explored some of the former trackbed around Whitby to Sandsend, although not yet walked to the tunnels. It's sad this line is no longer open and closed prior to Beeching. In strong winds the line was closed. I look forward to seeing the next part of your journey.

Love these videos of the railways around Whitby, and have personal memories from days gone by of seeing that bridge with nothing around it and the west cliff station, Whitby is definitely a place where many different worlds meet, which makes it even more breathtaking

Thanks for your commitment in bringing this very well presented coverage of this forgotten railway. I only travelled it once with my parents from Middlesbrough as a child in the late 50's. Sadly the excitement of a bucket and spade day on the Whitby beach surpassed the engineering magnificence of the route I travelled that day!

I was stood on west cliff the other day looking theough binoculars, I did a double take when i saw the railway carriage. I dont know the area at all so this is very interesting🙂

I live near the Whitby to Saltburn line. Saltburn was the last station on the line. At Saltburn, you would change trains. The closer you get to Saltburn you start to see other lines coming onto the main line. These were old lines going to very old mines. Because this area was riddled with mines. A pitty this line had to go

I did stay in the carriage for a week last November! It is expensive, but sleeps 6. Book in the autumn/winter period if you want it cheaper.

This is revelation to me. I wasn't aware that there was a line beyond West Cliff Station and how open the land appears to be in comparison with the approach from Whitby. Following your series of Scarborough to Whitby videos I wondered if there was anything left of West Cliff Station. Well this answers that and how beautiful and well kept it is!
A question Ant, does the cinder path go all the way to West Cliff Station or does it stop short?

Whilst I appreciate things change over time it’s so sad to see all this and other engineering endeavours toil and hard work simply was simply ripped up and perhaps forgotten or will be unknown by many until brought back in your videos .
