    You are smart. I've always been able to do the cuatro (single) r, because it is exactly like the "tongue flip" we use in English for things like butter, otter, sitter, matter, flutter, etc. But the RR was impossible for me, so impossible that I developed a very good uvular "rolled" rr that fooled even native speakers of Spanish. But....as a brass player, I need to be able to do a flutter tongue, which is the same as the rolled RR. And the uvular didn't work for that. In my 70s I sort of took this on as a project, when it doesn't really matter any more. I've reached your Step 3, and agree totally that the sides have to be tight to the top teeth. It started with the only "flutter" being in the middle of my tongue and I kept gradually working it forward, and yes blowing hard, until now I actually can flutter the tip of my tongue. I *have* to start with a letter T though, and still cannot do it on my brass instruments or in normal speech; still have to sort of "work it in." But it is neat to see someone who has used my exact process to figure it out.

    Well, I've been working to roll my r for my native language, and after 20 years past the point I was supposed to produce this sound, I'm still unable to make it, no matter how hard I try. This is ridiculous, I cannot even blow a raspberry or whistle and was unable to do that, yet I've picked up arabic pharyngeal sounds quite seamlessly

      Same, its called a tap, i can easily tap my tongue which is like an r trill but is just very short. I really can't extend it any further than that

      @@chickennoodlegamer915 Same here. I’ve damn near perfected tapping my R however I cannot quite hold it. I’ve been trying for 2ish hours. Hopefully I can get it soon

      @@yo-qt6bg I've been practicing for months and I can do it somewhat. It doesnt flow very well into sentences and I need to put alot of effort into it, unlike other people who can kinda just do it with no effort, but its definitely a start and a few more months of practice and I'll probably have it perfected

      I have been learning on duolingo but my progress has slowed. This year I will move on to less typing more conversational style learning. I think until a speaker can roll the rrrrs you will never sound right in conversation.

    • @MahalKitaLongTime
      @MahalKitaLongTime  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im on a quest to be fluent as well. I often watch the Easy Languages youtube channel (Now Easy Spanish), which is super useful because it's conversational, and it has subtitles in both English and Spanish. Also check out Spanish with Paul's youtube channel as well. Good luck!

    • @KianJorry
      @KianJorry 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spanish with Paul is really good. His material has filled in a number of gaps in my knowledge. I am not finding anyone method to be the best.
      I will try to mix my learning more as I think you can end up memorizing without actually learning if you know what i mean?

    • @MahalKitaLongTime
      @MahalKitaLongTime  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a good point about mixing different methods for your learning. I do the same. I talk to my coworkers and patients in Spanish. I only listen to Mexican radio. I read children's books in Spanish, and I read the www.realfastspanish.com/blog and also watch Spanish you tube channels, so I am hitting it at all angles. I memorize lyrics to my favorite songs by Mexican artists and sing in the car too.

    I feel like the third step doesn't really help, it seems like a totslly different exercise. Because I can do the 3rd step easily and it simulates a trill but then when I try and put it into a word it doesn't sound right

    tight but loose? those are polar opposites

    • @screamyourselftodeath3459
      @screamyourselftodeath3459 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tight at the back of the tongue; loose at the front. when i do it the back part of my tongue is kind of holding the front of my tongue into a bowl like shape.
