I hurt my back this weekend and binged the whole show between Friday night and Sunday afternoon. My friend had said she finished it and I was wild. I was curious, and I’m so glad I watched it.
Elliot is actually the smartest one. He is an insecure narcissist who constantly lies because he's ashamed. I grew up with no money and saw how I was treated differently, so I kind of understand why he would lie. Most people are sociopathic and he knows that. . . .that's what makes him smart. He's also surprisingly a good friend. While the others turned on Dory, he never turned completely on anyone.
Elliot was bad while everybody else was evil. Elliot differs from everybody in the friend group cause he knew who he was and wanted to change for the better. He was even the one who proposed to keep Dory away from their lives. Porscha and Drew were just complete followers with no purpose in life. Dory had a natural evil within her
I’m rewatching this show and it’s absolutely brilliant. Seasons 1-2 are very good, but season 3 (the first HBO season) is where it really takes off. Seasons 4 and 5 are my favorite though. The direction seasons 4 and 5 go transform the show into something different. Any other show doing what they did in those seasons would be considered “jumping the shark” but with this show, it works somehow. I absolutely love this show.
Man what a ride. I finally watched the last 3 seasons on HBO Max after 5 years from the end of season 2. For me the highlight was the trial. It was poignant to see Louie Anderson as a lawyer past his prime but who still did a serviceable job and wasn't a complete buffoon. And Shalita Grant was excellent too as Dory's attorney.
you've done it again friend! i love this show and it gets weirder and bigger every season. critics of this show only talk about the narcissism of millennials but you've highlighted the underlying issues that create people like this. opening the video on statistics of depression was brilliant. it really bothers me that the conversations around millennials ignores the historical levels of unpredictability we've grown up in and how hard it is to survive. were desperate for meaning and depressed lol. we recognize things aren't right but feel powerless to change it, and a lot of that conflict gets channeled inward. love how u explain how these characters are just trying to cope with life and are more than millennial tropes. as always wonderfully edited and beautifully done. love the effort and work that u clearly put into these. I watched ur sharp objects video and now I'm hooked lol. i plan to start the leftovers soon so i can watch ur other video. keep up the good work
The fact that this show gets bigger and more broad with each season, is the reason why I pretend this show only existed for two seasons lol. I thought the ending of season 5 was especially stupid
Awesome analysis. It seems cruelly fitting that Search Party has so little notoriety given its plight of the millennial theme. It did everything a tv show is supposed to do to make it big (smart, funny, well-made, relevant), but finds little success anyway.
Being on TBS certainly did not help garner attention. TBS shows get streamed on Hulu, and while it’s a popular platform, it’s not the first choice streaming platform for the demographic I think would really enjoy it, which are millennials who don’t mind having a good laugh at the stereotypes of their generation. The best thing that happened to the show was HBO Max taking over.
maybe a bit too clever for its own good. considering there is at least some truth to those videos on yt where young people cannot answer the most ridiculously basic questions [they probably just select the dumb ones, but even so...], you have to wonder if there was much of an audience for this subtle and intelligently written show. the humour is probably too dark. and theres no laughter track.
#IAmChantal I know the whole point of s5 was to be over the top, but I hated it. If the show ended on s4 it would have been 10/10. Still, I loved the series, I hope it blows up, and I will be rewatching several times
Perfect title for the video. I feel the same way about this show called Orphan Black. it's so incredibly good and the lead, Tatiana Maslany, gives some of the most amazing performances I've ever seen; she plays so many characters who are all wildly different, but it never had a big audience, just like Search Party. Both shows managed to get five, ten episode seasons, tell a complete story, and have a satisfying ending, however, which is awesome and a bit of a miracle. I discovered this show in February and watched the first three seasons all in one sitting, I was hooked. I like that it balances really dark topics, especially in season four, with absurd comedy. It was also nice to see a show about millennials that wasn't just a scathing critique of us, it's pretty similar to Broad City in that respect. They're able to poke fun at aspects of being a millennial without making everyone one note caricatures, or just straight up punching down and chastising us.
Great analysis. As a Boomer, it's refreshing to finally see a show that opts for painfully truthful characterizations over political correctness. No sacred cows are spared as every Millennial stereotype you can think of gets brutally satirized. And it's hilarious! But the greatest trick this show pulls off is getting us to care deeply about these deeply flawed characters.
wow I watched this show because of this video and what a freaking roller-coast of emotions and themes and characters. It's so good, I didn't like the pace in season 4 as much of the rest of the show but over all it's a perfect show. I'm surprised I never heard of it before. I loved that the guy from High Maintenance is there and Joe Pera made me laugh. thank you I hope I see more from you. I loved that sharp objects video and I'm subscribing as we speak.
I’m still making videos! I don’t have a fascinating excuse for the delay lol but I spent 9 months writing the script for my next one and I’m over halfway done with the edit, with many many more in the pipeline! I want them to all be high quality and it just takes time, especially when it’s just me making them and the videos are over a half hour. (My work ethic could definitely be better tho) I have a comedy podcast unrelated to the channel called Two Girls One Braincell you should check out! Different vibe though lol
The irony is that video essays like these that over analyze everything can be just as pretentious as the millennials that a show like Search Party is satirizing. No offense though, it’s a still a great analysis 👍
As someone's whose job is to analyse media and give feedback for a big corporation, I can guarantee that this skill is highly sought after by people producing those TV shows, video games, movies, etc. There is no such thing over over-analysis ;D
@ 5:17 - Not just Draw drags his feet - they BOTH drag their feet on the domestic disturbance...but instead of being equally accountable as a female/male and in all other ways equal....you just mitigated the responsibility appropriate.
I agree with you on season 4 - almost quit the show because of it but trudged thru since i wanted to see how the series was to end. Thank God cause season 5, though only okay, was much more tolerable than season 4, plus it has some great great bits: the entire last episode, jester society, Drew's brothers discussing if he were to move in.
This series was okay until the last season it literally didn’t make sense with the start of the series I didn’t like it they could’ve ended in the 4th season

Seasons 4 and 5 was completely unhinged in the most fun and interesting ways

Love Search Party. All five seasons on UKs ad-free BBC iPlayer

I loved this!!
I feel like some tv shows give a glimpse into how not to be in real life
Season 4 was the best, Cole Escola is insanely talented (and talented at playing insane!) Wish Chip came back for S5
This show is the best representation of millennials

I’m not sure how to feel about this show. It started normal, got meta, and then the zombies?? Idk
