How Communist China Helped Vietnam Defeat America

  • The Second Indochina War, called the Vietnam War in America and the Resistance War Against America in Vietnam, lasted for twenty years from 1955 to 1975.
In America we are mostly taught about the war’s divisive role in American society. The bad assumptions the government made when entering it. And sometimes its terrible effects on its combatants - the chemical warfare and the napalm. Sometimes they will show a 1970s movie or something.
American schools don’t really talk all that much about the other side. How the Vietnamese fought. Their strategic goals. Anything really. And they certainly don't teach how Communist China helped the Vietnamese win that war against the Americans. And just how vital that help was.
The history of Sino-Vietnamese relations is a long and varied one. But the Vietnam War marked a high point of Sino-Vietnamese Communist friendship. The time when Asian Communist states worked together to defeat the evil imperialist United States.

An interesting side story: In the heat of the Vietnam War, Ho Chi-min visited Mao and complained about malaria that was ravaging Ho's North Vietnamese troops and asked Mao for help with medical aid. Mao instructed Chinese medical researchers to find a remedy. Ms. Tu Youyou thus discovered artemisinin that would later save millions and millions of lives around the world. Nowadays malaria is completely wiped out in China. Ms. Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 2015 .

The subsequent war between China and Vietnam was due to the deterioration of relations between China and the Soviet Union. And Vietnam and the Soviet Union stand together. And now, we will be allies. Dear Asianometry, Thank you for another well researched and developed piece. In the USA an in depth and scholastically detailed understanding of the Vietnam war is available from both the historical US, Vietnamese, Russian and Chinese perspectives in the arenas of higher and advanced education, and interestingly enough within the Military system as well. However the Vietnam war is only briefly glossed over in many Regional Colleges, and High Schools, and not reviewed at all in many others. Regional politics have a significant effect upon school boards and funding, and there remains a level of Political Conservatism in many parts of the US, a combination of an anti-Communist pro-pax-Americana based in a perception that the war was "....lost at home...." and not on the battlefield, as result this effects what is taught, how much is taught, and where it is taught. However once the student is divorced from this myopia, the access and amount of information available from the "enemy" perspective is substantial.

According to historians, the planned Viet Minh attack was originally based on the Chinese "Fast Strike, Fast Victory" model, which aimed to use all available power to thrust into the command center of the base to secure victory, but this was changed to the "Steady Fight, Steady Advance" model of siege tactics. The battle plan designed on the fast strike model was due to open at 17:00 on 01/25/1954 and to finish three nights and two days later. However, this start date was delayed to 01/26/1954, because on 01/21/1954 Viet Minh's intelligence indicated that the French had grasped this plan. After much debate, due to the French knowledge of the battle plan and along with other complications, the assault was canceled on 01/26/1954, and the legendary Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap went away and designed a totally new plan with a new start time. He said that this change of plan was the hardest decision of his military career. And the rest is history.

I think the French were not being ahistorical. They were not stupid, they knew what they were doing. It allowed them to take a better advantage of ethnic resentments, which the French were exceedingly adept and picking up on, and allowing them to play groups off against each other. The French empowered minorities less from progressive ideas of equality and more as a way of binding those minorities to the French. The minorities got more rights and better access to jobs, and were very grateful to the French. This in turn meant that the majority groups, like the Viets would be set in resentment against minorities as much as the French, the minorities would be aware of this and this would bind them to upholding French rule to the bitter end. The montagnards, Hmong, and T'ai, and of course converted Christians were fundamental in French rule.

They imported people from the other countries without the consent of the local majority to weaken the traditional power of the majority race. China did support and aid VN in the VN-US War. However, it's is worthy to point out that USSR is the major supporter here. Chinese supports dropped significantly (literally nothing) to the end of the war because VN went on with the total liberation plan against the Chinese advisors' will. China wanted to keep North VN as a back yard and a puppet. They just supported VN enough to survive and advised VN to delay the liberation plan. It is more accurate to say that China help VN surviving the war but not defeating US. The support level dropped nearly to zero in the last years of the war. However, with the USSR support in these critical years, VN did defeat America. The Chinese soldiers on VN soil was a controversial issue. They did send military advisors and many support forces but there are no records of Chinese troops in actual fighting. No veterans I met ever told me fighting or co-operating with Chinese soldiers.

That is not true. The Maoist era supported Vietnam sincerely. It believes that communism can unite against imperialism. From 1965 to 1976, he fully supported Vietnam. But the Soviet Union and China began to split in the communist camp. Mao believed that the Soviet Union had become revisionism. They began to fight for their own justice to support Vietnam together.
Before 1975, the main support for Vietnam was China. After Mao's death, Vietnam was mainly supported by the Soviet Union.
When Nixon visited China, one of his appeals was that he needed China's help to resolve the Vietnam War. This is also the slogan of his presidential campaign.
      This is the information:
Two divisions and one regiment of the antiaircraft artillery unit entered Vietnam in August to assist in air defense operations. Later, 4 batches entered the Vietnam round. Together with the air defense units attached to the Vietnam aid detachments, there were a total of 16 artillery divisions and 63 high artillery units. About 150,000 artillery regiments and some independent antiaircraft artillery battalions were deployed at various strategic points in northern Vietnam. The People's Liberation Army fought 2,153 times in Vietnam, shooting down 1,707 U.S. aircraft and injuring 1,608. The People's Liberation Army Railway Corps, Engineering Corps and other aid troops have successively more than 100,000 people, rushed to repair 1,778 railway facilities that were destroyed by US planes, built or rebuilt 577 kilometers of railway lines; built 7 arterial highways, 1206 kilometers long, and 305 bridges , 4,441 culverts; built two modern airports and aircraft caverns in the inner row and Anpei; built 239 various tunnels (over 25,000 meters in total length), 9 permanent and temporary docks, and 123 excavated permanent fortifications , 15 submarine communication cables (103 kilometers in length) and a large number of national defense combat readiness projects. The People's Liberation Army naval minesweeping force cleared 42 mines of various kinds, with a total sweeping area of 201 square kilometers, and successively cleared the ports of Haiphong, Hongji, Jinpu and other waterways in the Northeast Islands. As of August 1973, China has assisted Vietnam with more than 320,000 air defense, engineering, railway, mine clearance, and logistics support troops. In addition, the Chinese government has provided Vietnam with military equipment and economic assistance worth more than 20 billion U.S. dollars, and has helped the Vietnamese army train a large number of military technical personnel of various types. In the anti-US war in Vietnam, more than 4,200 Chinese People's Liberation Army officers and soldiers were seriously injured, and 1,100 were killed and buried in Vietnam.

The Chinese support was nearly zero at the end years of Vietnam-US War because Vietnam went ahead with the liberation plans against the will of "Chinese advisors". China never wanted North VN to liberate South Vietnam. China just supported enough for North VN to survive, their advisors just want to delay the total liberation. The USSR is the only good friend here. VN will never forget their support. China just wants to keep North Vietnam under its control like North Korea now. See North Korea now? It's a puppet in China's hand.
And then when VN did win US in 1975, China is not satisfied at all. In the late 1980s, China wants to normalize the China-US relationship and receive the US monetary aids. China promises US to "teach VN a lesson" by causing the VN-China Border War in 1979, which lasted 10 years, delaying significantly VN recovery and restoration. A poor country, just out of 2 major wars against US and France, invaded China border so that China must defend their land? It's a joke, which is used to start the 1979 VN-China Border War. At the same time period, China and US also support Pol Pot to cause VN-Cambodia War. Yeah, China is the "friendly neighbor" and everybody loves China!!!

For Afghanistan it was the shoulder launched Stinger missiles, for North Viet Nam in the mid 60s it was the SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) and other military aid provided by China that made the difference. Because of this, 1979-1989, the relationship between China and the US was very good, especially China's "reform and opening up" in the 1980s. From the communist economy to the state capitalist economy, China received various investments and help from the United States. But because of what happened at Tiananmen Square in 1989, the entire West began to impose sanctions on China, and the relationship between the US and China was crap since that. @@sidneysun3865 If Polpot didn't commit a massacre raid that aim at our civilians in the border region of our Southwestern land and claimed that the whole Southern Vietnam belongs to the ancient Angkar then we could care less about his stupid purges and focus on rebuilding our nation instead. Because for our post-war society, 1 problem wasn't enough or something

@@xboxstudent Regardless of the justification, please don’t tell me Vietnam didn’t have geopolitical motives when it invaded Cambodia.
Also, there is no room for hypothesis in history. Why don’t you ask yourself what if China didn’t support Vietnam in the war against the French and the Americans?

Vietnamese people are grateful for that help, but China's ambition has always been to annex Vietnam, the Vietnamese know that better than anyone, so they always hate China.

Interesting thing is, during the 20 years of afghan unrest, China didn't say a word about supporting any parties in the afghan until recently they allow taliban to visit China. Most likely is because China didnt want to accidentally placing wrong bets, and they know that taliban is winning for sure after US withdraws

The USSR lent big help to Vietnam too, but that's real help because it didn't ask for anything in return. China on the other hand, wanted Vietnam to become its vassal state, take Vietnam's sea and islands in return without disclosing it in the first place, so it's actually a scam, not a help.
