- On December 5th, the Palm Beach County Community Services Department collaborated with the Department of Housing and Economic Development to host the Securing Our Future Economic Mobility Summit. Funded by a National Association of Counties (NaCo) grant, the summit brought together leaders from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to discuss ways to promote economic mobility for low income residents throughout the county; Dr. Raj Chetty, Director of Opportunity Insights was the keynote speaker for this event.
The purpose of the summit was to increase awareness about the Securing Our Future Initiative and create a dialogue between local leaders to identify strategies to increase upward economic mobility for families with children who are living in poverty. The Securing Our Future Initiative is a collaboration between the Citizens Advisory Committee on Health and Human Services, and the Birth to 22 Alliance, created to reduce child poverty in Palm Beach County by 10% over the next ten years. The initiative focuses heavily on creating opportunities for participating families to increase their wages and overall household income.
The themes for the summit included: enhancing access to health and human service supports, leveraging social capital, and using technology to advance economic mobility. The summit also focused on the need to address systemic racism and other forms of discrimination that can prevent people from achieving economic mobility.
The summit focused on a variety of areas including housing, employment, transportation, food, health, education, childcare and criminal justice. These workshops were designed to highlight economic mobility initiatives within each respective area, glean best practices from national leaders and subject matter experts and engage local leaders and nonprofits in the county’s effort to enhance access and opportunity.
